Miss the old times?

Miss those great old games and the old times with those. -Snip!-

Mark Edit: Sorry, we stay on the side of the legal, here. No emulator/ROM links, please. If you want to go that way, do it on your own time. In the meantime, this thread is now a general "retro gaming" flashback. We now take you back to your regularly scheduled browsing.

Ok in no particular order.
NES
SMB2, TMNT, SMB3, the old Ducktales game, Megamans (megamen?) 1-5

SNES
streetfigher 2 (anyone ever see Streetfighter 1? me either) Super mario world, kurby's avalanch, DKC, all the mortal kobat games, yoshi island, TNMT 4, Mario RPG

Sega
Sonic 123. Knights into dreams (saturn), sonic pinball, Altered beast, Golden Axe 2

PS1
FFVII.. FFVII.. FFVII, I think thats all I ever really played on ps1, played through ffvII and ffIX but nothing beats FFVII

N64
Mario, SSB, Mario cart 64, Goldeneye, (too many to count really)

DreamCast.
Powerstone (the only game I bought for the thing before they went under) and my disk from EBay with all the NES games on it.

that brings us to PS2, which isnt long enough ago to be nastalgic.

I don't exactly miss the old days. I think there's enough good games today and more than ever. BUT, I miss the fact that certain genres of games are waaaaaay too rare now.

I love 2D platformers for instance and nowadays the closest you get to old school stuff with major games is stuff like LBP and NSMB.

I just wish there was more new "old school" game i should say. I love what's generally popping on PSN and Wiiware because more often then not the games are having a certain nostalgia flavor.

Maybe it's the old rose-tinted glasses, but games back then seemed a lot better than they do today. So many games today have the same problems as games back in the day did (invisible walls, painted on doors, only 2 different enemies just coloured different 20 times, etc) despite being on much more powerful machines.

Like RangerZero said, you just don't get good platformers any more (bar LBP). The new Sonic games are a disgrace compared to the Mega Drive originals.

You don't get side scrolling fighting any more either (apart from Castle Crashers). One of the best games I ever had on the Mega Drive was The 3 in MegaCollection that had Streets of Rage, Golden Axe and Revenge of the Shinobi. Immense stuff.

Also for all you NES enthusiasts, you should check out vNes.com (http://www.virtualnes.com/), where you can LEGALLY play NES games online for free! Weee!

I still play 8- and 16-bit games on a regular basis, as well as my N64.

It was a very different time for the game development process, so it's understandable if the way games are produced is different now. Although on one hand I do miss the average level of love that went into games and shareware, there are still some amazing titles being developed today.

Hell, I still beleive nothing can match the awesomeness of the N64. I can spend days, even weeks just looking for those bananas in Donkey Kong 64. And don't even get me started on Goldeneye (especially when I play multiplayer with my brother)

Heck, even the worst games were great on N64.

I got lucky around a month ago. My brother got a hold of 2 NES's for free. We got some games too, like Super Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, some baseball game, and other games that I can't remember at the moment.2009-02-15 16:03:00

Prolly must be because the N64 era was your prime time.
I could say the same about the NES era since it's my time but in all honesty, I think there's some 30-50 really great games that came out each generations. Maybe a tad more during the PS2/Xbox/GC era.

The Golden Age:
Before Lucas Arts decided to focus all it's resources on blood-milking the Star-Wars licence in favour of... you know... *Good* games, like Grim Fandango and Sam & Max.

Before Black Isle was devoured by the big bad giant, effectively killing the infinity engine and the most popular genre of western-RPG adventure games.

Before bleeding edge graphics became prerequisite for any game being picked up and developed.

I mostly miss the PC games of the old days. Back then, PC games were more than just First Person Shooters and Real Time Strategy games. They were more genres to enjoy.

I miss the adventure games of yesteryear. Like the previous poster said, I miss games like Sam & Max. Then of course there's Loom, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Maniac Mansion, etc.

I miss non-linear epic RPGs like ULTIMA. Man, I loved that series. Too bad Ultima 9 had to suck. Then there's Wizardry, Might & Magic, Bard's Tale, Betrayal at Krondor, etc.

I miss God-games like Populous and SimCity.

I miss turn-based strategy games like CIV, Heroes of Might and Magic, etc. All we get now are RTS after RTS, and most of them feel like clones.

I miss brain-teaser games like Lemmings.

*sigh*

Yes, I can understand what you mean. This was my first real game that I played when I was 3.

Yea I remember when the N64 came out.. this crazy guy that owned the video rental store (when those were still popular) got ten delivered from japan like a month early, so we got to play it before most other people.. only problem was they were in japanese and couldnt play american games... I didnt care tho. those three days of playing Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64 were nothing less than magic...

On a side note, he ended up going out of business because he tried to do the same thing with DVD players (before anyone had heard of them) and at $700 a peice for the players he couldnt make enough money (no one wants to rent a vcr) to make his money back before they were available in every walmart for like 50 bucks...

but yea I loved my 64... and never had any problems with it atall *other than my copy of bomberman 64 crapping out on me* the only thing I didn't like was how they stuck "64" in like all the game names for that system..

Oh and as for Golden Eye, multiplayer... Oddjob is the best... "Ha my heads not at the same level everyone elses is.. have fun trying to shoot me now!" best level (IMO) the facility, or whatever, where you come out of the bathroom and go down the stairs... was pretty fun..

Wow man, that's pretty cool. I had 90% of the games on that list. Alex Kid, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, these were some of my favorite games!. I doubt anyone on these forums even knows what Alex Kid is lol. I will probably pick this up at some point

you just brought up a good point...you can still find those old game systems in working condition i mean even normal nintendos....as opposed to todays game systems when they first come out the first batch usually craps out in like a year....i guess you could point towards the complexity to the new systems as opposed to the old but still i think they may be getting sloppy..

and i dont really remember bomberman 64 that much but it sounds like it would be fun

I actually own Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. It's completely awesome.

I don't need my old Genny plugged anymore except for Castlevania Bloodlines.
The emulation is really good and you can play without stupid filters and in proper screen ratio.

The fact that all Phantasy Stars, Shinning Forces, Sonic and Streets of Rage series are all there makes this game a freaking steal at 30$. There's even SMS games that you unlock like Golden Axe Warrior, a game I always wanted to play but never could.

Buy it.

what i like about old games is you put them in and go directly to the start screen. and hit start and start playing. then you pass alevel and directly starts the next level. i grow tired of all the cutscenes and intros. if i want to have an indepth story time i will watch tv. but i just want to have a challenging game i dont want to have to wait all the time2009-02-20 14:02:00

Dave, I know what you mean... especially me having started gaming in the days of Centipede, Space Invaders, and the original Donkey Kong. ****, I wish our Atari 2600 still worked!

Though, I do have appreciation for games that manage to pull off the gripping storyline AND good gameplay. That is a feat in and of itself.

So my copy of the Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection (http://www.play.com/Games/PlayStation3/4-/8084385/Sega-Mega-Drive-Ultimate-Collection/Product.html) (or Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, to Americans) arrived yesterday. It was good playing my old favourites again, as well as some classics I missed first time round.

I had forgotten how hard some of the games were though. Like Comix Zone, you only get 1 life, when you run out of energy that's it game over. So many games feature one hit kills too. It's crazy when you think that most games today give you a health bar, an armour bar AND unlimited lives. Also modern games spoil us with their tutorial levels, like deboerdave said, once the game loads it's start menu > go! You figure your own **** controls out.

Don't forget about updates either, if someone buys a new PS3 and LBP today and wants to play online they have to wait for firmware and software updates before they can.

one thing thats pretty crazy too that someone just brought up is although the games are old...they still maintain a good challenge.. Like me and one of my buddies played through donkey kong country 1-3...and they get very tough.

the mario games still ramp difficulty quite a bit too

I keep my Dreamcast and NES out at all times.

I do miss when it was more popular to be colorful and abstract.

I find it funny how sometimes older abstract style games payed more attention to things than newer 'realistic' ones.
Wind Waker for example: Link followed things with his eyes and changed facial expressions while you were playing, he also treated stairs like real stairs, placing his feet on each step.

Yet to this day you see things like enemies who don't point their guns at you to shoot but hit you anyways, and sliding back and forth rapidly without moving their legs.
And are activated my invisible triggers that ignore rather you can be spotted.
Not saying its in all newer games and that it never works both ways.
Also illogical things are more noticeable when things look more real.
