SingStar Icon
Archive: 5 posts
You might remember in late 2012 Sony made the unfortunate error of introducing a fullscreen advert for SingStar with firmware update 4.30. It was placed under the Game tab of the XMB and looked like this: https://i.imgur.com/tFLD2HU.png It was promptly removed in the next firmware update after the negative backlash. It you live in the US you've probably forgotten about it by now. That is, it was removed unless you live in Europe or Australia. Those regions still have the advert one and a half years later. Yep, that's right, they still have that really obnoxious advert every time they start their consoles. There's no way to move it or hide it. It's always present in the same spot. The icon has been made deliberately to occupy the most space possible. If you start the console without a disc, or navigate over it to get to your folders, you get hit with a fullscreen advert for SingStar that replaces your wallpaper. It didn't help that SCEE's community managers at the time, particularly Nina Scherer, only managed to provoke people further with sarcastic comments (http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2012/10/23/get-ready-for-singstar-on-the-xmb/#comment-291058) basically telling people to 'deal w/ it'. It's obnoxious to the point where you might as well pirate, at least then you'll have control over what you see. It sucks to be reminded of all this every time you start the console. I can honestly say that this, along with all the other clutter in the XMB and removed features from the PS3, has really soured my taste. I can't remember the last time I bought a game or anything from the PlayStation Store. There's negative impetus to even switching the thing on. You can expect the same treatment from SCEE with the PS4. I guarantee by the end of the PS4s lifespan you will have fullscreen adverts every time you turn the console on. Maybe it'll be like a minigame where you have to struggle to find your game disc icon between all the ads. | 2014-05-14 13:36:00 Author: Ayneh Posts: 2454 |
You still have that thing? crazyness. But no I never saw this myself and I don't have any ads on my PS3 itself except when I'm looking at the PS store. Most close thing i have that annoys me is when you start up LBP2 nowadays it forces you to watch the PS-Move warning screens for 5 seconds. | 2014-05-14 17:52:00 Author: Lord-Dreamerz Posts: 4261 |

Who knows, maybe Move-supported PS4 games will add the skip feature. -hyper | 2014-05-14 18:08:00 Author: hyperdude95 Posts: 1793 |
Wow, I never realised it was removed in the US. It is pretty annoying, especially when you have your PS3 set to go to the game menu rather than "what's new" because you want to avoid the adverts, because singstar is the default option when you switch on if there's no disc in. Just a couple of days ago while I was streaming Crash 1 on twitch, moley and hyper were shouting at me for 3 hours to go on singstar because they had seen it in my games list. But because I'd never played it before I had to download it so nothing very interesting happened | 2014-05-14 18:40:00 Author: ARD Posts: 4291 |
I've never really seen it as that annoying or problematic personally, it's just sort of there. Sure it takes up the whole screen when you hover over it but it doesn't take to long to roll the cursor away from the icon, and you're not going to be spending too much time on the menu screen anyway. That's just my opinion though of course | 2014-05-14 19:50:00 Author: craigmond Posts: 2426 |
