Making a grabbing claw

Archive: 14 posts

Hi, I am trying to make a claw that moves left and right but up and down too. I am trying to do something similar to the grabbing claw object available, but i can not get the up and down movement to happen properly, it just snaps. I know i need a winch (copying the directions of the premade version) but not sure if i have room to do it, as i have took up all three layers with the rest of the claw. Any help? (If you see the claw that you need for Mags The Mechanic's car, then that is a similar idea to what im trying to achieve). It will also be used with three switches (one to open/close the claw) *working*, one to make it go left and right *working* and one to go up and down *not working* any ideas?
cheers

I suppose my first thought about the winch not working is maybe the claw is getting stuck on something causing it to break, or the claw is so heavy that the winch breaks. Why is the claw taking up all 3 layers? I suppose I'd look into what may be interfering with it. Also, a piston will work equally as well to raise and lower the claw. Lastly one other thing you might want to look into is the strength of the winch. If it's too strong and it is getting caught on something, then it could potentially be breaking itself.

If you can describe what your using it for a little better, then we might be able to help you. It sounds like you're on the right track as far as you switches go. Maybe take a few minutes and really flesh out for us what exactly you have going on, what mechanics are operating which objects. Additionally some screen shots would help us in trying to figure out what your problem might be.

I'm trying to do a "teddy grabber" style machine (you know, at the fair for example, where you control a claw, and move it left and right and gain a prize, then it drops down a hole and you collect the prize).

I have made a cabinet for the claw (complete with prizes), and i have the mechanism at the top of the cabinet (with a piston, allowing it to move left to right). The claw itself is operated by wobble bolts that allow it to close, allowing for the prizes to be grabbed (hence taking up all the layers, including the cabinet).

I am using two way switches to control all of the above, using direction <--/--> (as this does what i need it do). I just need to allow it to come up and down to reach the prizes. I have not tried a piston to do this, but it might be worth me trying to adjust the tightness of the winch as I think it is max tightness. which as you say, is not really ideal as it may snap.

Other than the up/down mechanism, I have it working and acting how I want...
Unfortunately I can't provide screenshots 'cause I don't have a camera or anything...

Thanks for the quick reply though

That sounds like it should work fine. The mechanics seems to make sense, using wobble bolts is a nice simple way to get what you want. I suppose from here we should look more thoroughly at the winch. To start with, I would try to attach the winch and see if it operates fine with no switches attached to it. Also, it would do you some good to check the minimum length of the winch. I know I've tried to use pistons/winches at 0 length and had the object they are moving retract and squish the parts, effectively destroying the winch/piston.
Furthermore, is the winch breaking in the same position (or relative position), or does it seem to break at random places.

And you're welcome for the quick reply

I'm not at home at the minute, but I'll try have a look tomorrow when I am, I can get back to you with further details then. I'll try it without a switch and get back to ya tomorrow at some point, thanks man 2009-02-12 17:06:00

You don't need a camera for screenshots. If you take a picture in-game, you can hit square and choose to export it to your PS3's photos section. From there, you can copy it off onto a USB drive for upload.

Or just draw something real quick in MSPaint... visuals would definitely help as I can't really tell what you're doing wrong from your description.

oh cool! I didn't realize you could do that! Will certainly remember that down the line 2009-02-12 17:50:00

Thanks Inspectigater, I tried pistons instead of winch and success

Now I just need to work out a way to stop my prize bubbles from popping when the claw goes near them and I can post the level

thanks people.

Oh and here's a basic preview :

yay it works! Heh, that looks pretty fun! Gives me a cool idea. You could have that mechanism, but you only get one grab... or you get X amount of grabs for all the optional objectives that you completed in the level.

As far as making your point bubbles not break, there's not much you can do about that... although there is one thing you could try... Try to coat each one in a thin layer of dissolve, that way the dissolve might take the hit instead of the point bubble. I doubt it will 100% solve your problem, but it might cut down on how many break.
You can then place a magnetic switch on the dissolve attached to the dissolve. Place a key of the same color in the points bin, so when you drop them all the dissolve comes off! ^^ Just a thought. Glad I could help you out.

Yeah the idea is that you get three goes to grab as much stuff as you can
ill try that dissolve theory, though it will take me AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGES...
thanks again

How strong is your piston? If you cut down on the strength it won't force itself down into the bubbles so hard, and that might prevent some from breaking. There's probably a 'sweet spot' you'll need to find. If you turn it down too much it won't be able to lift things back out.

The dissolve is an interesting idea... but I'm really not sure how well it would work. An interesting experiment to try.

No it won't! Make a dissolve circle. Place a new point bubble in it. (thus cutting a hole in the dissolve exactly the size you want). Then select the whole object (drag with the cursor, just like you would with a mouse) and push down on the left stick to copy it. Then paste 3 or so, copy all of those, paste them, then copy ALL of those and you've got yourself a pretty fast growing population of point bubbles. Follow? Shouldn't take you more than about a minute.

Yeah, good point. Piston strength is quite possibly what's breaking your bubbles.

Don't forget to put the magnetic switch on the dissolve and wire it to the dissolve before you copy it. Otherwise... you will have a whole lot of fiddly wiring to do afterwards.

cheers again
