My first two levels: 'Green Top' and 'Polar Peak - Act 1' [+pics]

Archive: 25 posts

Hi!

Those levels are in a oldschool vein, sonic visual like. The first one is in a forest theme and the last in the tundra, with lots of plataform things. Take a look in them!

Some pics:

Ok just got finished running through both of your levels.

Heres what I thought.

Green Top:

Pros: Beautiful Style.

Very well put together.

Creative use of space.

Nicely done, and humorous enimies.

Theres tons of other stuff for this list, I really liked the level.

Cons.
Only had three problems with this level...(2 are pretty small)

Ok one was when you are launched up on the cliff with the flipper thing, if you jump high enough you see some darkmatter, (on the top cliff to the right with all the spikes) not really a problem just maybe put a camera zone there to prevent this.

second problem was with the enimies... While being really well done and looked awesome, they really didnt pose much of a challenge. The technique seemed to be, to run past the guys on a different plane and then jump on the from behind, or just leave them alone... You could probably make them a little more challenging.

Speaking of challenging, my third problem was about somthing that was too challenging. Ok the swinging electric poles, most of them werent a problem. but one in particularly was. ok on this one there is a row of spikes, then the swinging pole hanging over a pit of gas... I couldnt make it past. Continued twice and died there everytime. you could either make the thing swing a little bit slower, or put a double life checkpoint there, either way...

I plan to come back and finish this level later, when a have a chance.

Polar Peak, Act 1:

Ok this is what Im talking about!!!

Loved this level. Very fun Very good use of materials, Awesome overall feel.

I really dont have the time to talk about all the stuff I liked in this level, the Polarbears were awesome, The swinging spinning lifting grabby elevator things were a really cool way to get from point A to B. everything just seemed to flow really well.

Only had two negitive things to say about it.

One (easy fix) right after the sled ride the monster walked out on the bridge flipped themselves over and waited for me to kill them... probably not what you wanted them to do..

Two (not so easy fix, but doesnt really need fixing) the sled ride was REALLY short.

Other than that I loved this level, thanks for sharing it..

If you wanna play one of mine, my F4F level is in my sig.

Hello! I played your two levels, and I really enjoyed them. My review applies to both levels unless specified:

The good stuff:
- I love the retro platforming style of your level design. The obstacles were very cleverly designed so that the action was non-stop.
- Simple but charming visuals.
- Cool-looking enemies, with some very ingeniously designed ones.
- Lots of delicious score bubbles!
- The level was long AND fun.

Stuff that need improvement:
- For Green Top, I agree with the previous review. The two electric poles were kinda tough. I can understand if you your level to get harder as the player progresses through it, but at this point the increase in difficulty was a little too sudden. I think this was the only point in the level were the action kinda slowed down for me. Most people will probably run out of lives here.
- Again, I agree with the previous review about the sled ride in Polar Peak being too short. Sled rides are FUN, and because of this it would be beneficial for your level if they were long. It would be very difficult to fix this, however, so either you leave this as it is, or delete the sled-ride area entirely and replace it with some other obstacle/puzzle. Then, maybe you can create another longer sled ride in some other area of this level, preferably where there's still room to edit. OR you can make it an optional bonus/secret area.

I gave both your levels 5 stars and hearts. I'm hoping your next projects are as fun as these are!
If you have time, please try any of my levels. They can be found with my sig. Thanks a bunch!

I loved your levels... And hearted them both.

With Green Top, I expected I immediately felt that it was a great looking level. When it started out, it was very linear... So I was expecting it to be a bit plain... But it really started to branch out in some really cool ways. I really liked that.

With the Polar Peak levels, I liked all the details. The snow and ice on the trees. I liked the bear... - It would have been cool to put an audio on him to roar when he gets close, though.

I loved the sponges that you grab and they swing you up and in... I thought that was very clever.

I did think the snowmobile section was too short. It felt almost tossed in. You see that thing and really want to fly.

I would have liked some little bit of a story to go along with them both though... A little hook.

Alright, posting feedback as i go:

--- Green Top ---
- The sponge swing looks a tad.. basic. This might be intended, but i think a more flowery theme would've looked better, since the whole level is in a flowery setting.

- Found a bunch of Dark Matter squares.. floating above the swing trough the fire part and the Piston-moved platform.. I used my roof-grabbing techniques to walk over them, but they leaded nowhere.. I have no idea what these blocks do. Please fix this.

- Yeah, you can also see the dark matter which holds the sponge part. Right above the springboard.

- Once more, dark matter material holding a platform. This time it's a thin layer, in front of the platform. You could easily fix this by glueing it to the dark matter BEHIND the platform.

- The place where you pick up the "Mushroom-baddie" shows a piece of dark matter in the bottom left corner. Under the gas.

- The yellow baddie has bad stickering (You see brown on the back) and visible emitters.

- Overall, decent basic platformer. With a matching basic visual style.

--- Polar Peaks ---

- Noticed how the first polar bear had a spike on his back, so far i've seen two that haven't.

- visible sensor switch at the part just after the snow-scooter part.

- Once again, decent basic level Better visuals than the first part.

I'm really grateful for the feedback! Thanks everyone!

Madafaku: You aren't the first one to have the same problem with the swinging electric pole. I took off the spikes and put a checkpoint. This way i think will not be too fustrating more. The dark matters problem will be fixed xD

I will think in a better way the make the enemies more challenging too.

In Polar Peak, the enemies after the Ice Peak part was easy to fix. About the Ice Car, i know its a bit short >.< The original idea was to have another sled ride with a bigger percouse in the end, but the thermometer thing filled up and i cant put anything more in the level = In act 2 i will make a much bigger one.

Thanks for the feedback! I will play your level and comment it!

mostevilmilo: Thank you very much for the feedback! I tried to fix the swinging electric pole, think it works better now! In the Polar Peak, cant change too many things because of the thermometer =x
I will play your level and give a feedback!

dobi6: Good to know you liked the level! The Polar bears has a roar audio, but i don't know how to make it more frequent. About the history, don't know if will work well in the level, i will try to do something xD

Thanks!

ThommyTheThird: I will fix the dark matters problem, thanks for the report! About the sponge thing, it was meant to be that simple, but looks it doesn't fit well. The emitters in the yellow badnik was to be visible too.

About the stickering, i will take a look xD

Some polars bears has spikes, others hasn't. Some of the bears hasn't because they're placed in trick parts (like the cavern in the beginning where theres not enoght height).

The layout is really very basic, because i don't have much ability in create complex things xD

Thanks for the report and i will try to fix!

In the Polar Peak, i made the Ice Car part a bit longer. Hope its better now xD

About to go try these now, I'll edit this post with some feedback on both!

Green Top
Pros:
+ Basic fun.
+ Nice for a look that's been a lot.
+ Love the jump pads, they feel great.
+ Really nice enemies!

Cons:
- Too basic. We've seen this before!
- Lots of parts showing, poored mixed together.
- No real exciting parts, the level just sorta happens.

Overall it wasn't bad, but nothing shot out at me about it being really fun. The enemies were pretty good, but the rest was standard fare.

Polar Peak
Pros:
+ Much better visuals than Green top.
+ I like the swoopy thing at the beginning
+ POLAR BEARS
+ I like ALL of the swoopy things. The platforming in this level is MUCH more varied, I like it a lot.

Cons:
- Needs overall polish.
- You can see emitters on that first fire emitting creature near the beginning.
- Sensor and grab switch visible on the sled.
- A story would help this level out a lot!
- Hide your bits and pieces man! Don't make the music boxes visible. MM showed them to us so we got a basic understanding of things just by playing, in our levels, you should definitely hide'm!

Similar in style and flow to the first level, but with some different mechanics sprinkled throughout. I had a problem with how often the same few mechanics were used, but they were fun for what they were. The level was simple, but had neat concepts. 4 stars from me!

for F4F, could you try Stella Deus for me? It's in my sig, and it's 2 player co-op! So play it with someone reliable

Thanks for the feedback, superezekiel!

I agree with you that Green Top hasn't something really different, but is my first level hahaha I did it to learn more about the editor. In the Polar Peak, i have some experience in the editor and could done some more cool things. (but still very simple)

I will try to fix the things! (and hide de music box in Polar Peak xD)
Maybe the history will stay for the next level, so i can make a more cool one hehe

I will play you level and give a feedback, Thanks!

Matt 82, i read the feedback in the game, thanks for it! i made a better score on Polar Peak, i think now it will be harder to beat my score haha

Thanks!

Hi! Just played your Polar Peak level. Nice job!

Most of the things I noticed have already been discussed, so I'll focus on what I liked :

+ I see that your level have a "relaxing" tag. I don't know why, but this is really the feeling I had when playing this level. There's a small challenge to keep things interesting, but I enjoyed just exploring. The look is simple, but it works well with this kind of level.

I'm looking forward for the next part!

If you have some time, take a look at one of my levels. Links are in my signature. Thanks!

If you want to beat my score, here goes a hint: You can get almost all the bubbles in Polar Peak without dying, except the five ones before the ice car part in the upper way. When you get to the baloon in the upper way, get back and go to the lower way where you can make some score combos xD

Make some little changes in Polar Peak. I'm trying to make a story to it, but didn't make a good one yet >.<

I just had the chance to sit down and play through Polar Peak and I really liked it! I think you did a great job at creating an icy mountain top. The creatures were all well designed and I loved your polar bears! Platforming elements were just as good as the visuals, with lots of interesting mechanics. Nice use of the balloon to float to the underside of the cliff.

I had a couple issues with the spring platform that rocks back and forth. It was somewhat tricky to jump on and hit at the right time, because whenever I got close it would fire. I did get it eventually though!

I thought it was pretty cool that you created a multi path segment as well. I think this will help with the level's replayability. I played it twice myself, just to see each path. Overall, a nice level that I enjoyed playing through. Well done.

I played both of these tonight. Very fun! Really interesting use of the sponge with the circular lifts. I liked the multipath and secret areas. Nice lighting too. Earned both hearts for the levels and the creator one too. (never strings attached on those from me either - H4H must end.) Nice work - looking forward to seeing other levels from you.

Thanks for sharing

Wow thanks Mr. Supercomputer and Morgana25

I fixed the problem with the moving spring. Positioned better the sensor making not too trick to jump. Hope works better now

I made the Ice Car course in the upper way more stable too, not too relevant hehe

Again, i'm really grateful for the feedback, thanks!

I played through Polar Peak Act 1 as I saw it listed in another forum and wanted to leave you some feedback on my impressions as I played through it.

A few of the aspects that I liked the most was that it all worked and flowed fairly cleanly from beginning to end. By this I am meaning that I didn?t run into problems playing through any section due to it being a poorly created level. The places where I died a few times were my fault for not paying attention or being careful rather than wonky camera angles, shoddy level design et cetera.

Another aspect that I like were your people-moving devices. There are plenty of standard moving platforms but you have also made some creative machines to lift, bounce and propel the sack character along. My favorite are the lift and rotate arms that simultaneously lift and fling you up to higher levels.

I enjoyed your pacing between the platforming elements and the progression of the story you are setting. I think that you have done a good job setting a story, with characters, albeit shallow, vague characters, an antagonist and a goal and you don't do it by stopping the flow of game play every other step.

I didn?t run into any blatant problems, visible switches or similar issues though I only played through the upper path last night. The next place needed to go to or action required to progress is apparent such that arrows or instructions are not needed which is another mark of a well laid out level. There are a few hidden areas as well and a few I missed though I suspect they are in the lower path that I didn?t try.

The only place I had trouble was on your rocket ice sled. Cars in general seem to be tricky to get right and sliding ice sequences add challenge to boot. I think my character was too far to the front of the vehicle as it flipped over during one of the jumps and landed top down on the next ice ledge. I think it would be interesting to die and head back up to see if you respawn the ice car, something that you should always try to do, but in this case I was able to jump down the last few ledges to the next checkpoint. So nothing game breaking but a bit less than graceful. I imagine that this car flipping is not the norm and don't think it reflects poorly on your level but I do tend to bring out the worst in cars.

From the perspective of the story it seemed a bit too open ended. There is a polar bear king coming up in a future level and we don't get to a clean stopping point. The scenery at the end was the same as it had been through much of the level and there wasn?t any sense of entering the Polar Bear Kings realm or dominion or moving on to the next phase of the story. Not a large bit here and the fact that this is what I?m talking about means that you have put together a level with few other items to constructively criticise.

The length of the level seems about right with diverging paths to take and a few different environments to play through made this an entertaining level to play. It was a relaxed level and I could relax a bit playing it.

Wow, thanks for the feedback, Trindall! I'm glad to know you liked the level!

I agree with you about the story. The original Polar Peak hasn't any history, so the people in this forum suggested me to do one for the map. I had to do it set in the level that was almost finished, and i'm not good in stories hehe. The act 2 will be better in this aspect (i hope hahaha), but the style will be similar, with not too much baloons.

About the ice sled, I tried to make it more stable, but it sometimes doesn't go well. After a edge of the floor, the ice car jumps with no reason and can turn to the wrong way >.< I tried to resolve this in many ways, changing the material, putting more weight in the back of the ice car, changing the course, but no great success. =
The lower way goes well, the upper still a bit unstable.

Again, thanks for the feedback!

I just played "Polar Peak," and I thought it was a pretty solid level with a very nice theme. My only complaint would be the grabbable floors, but I'm not a fan of those to begin with.

Oh yeah, and your level icon looks like "Polar Pear"
