Talking about SamProtagonists "New Content Priorities" thread.

Archive: 44 posts

Hey guys,
As not to mess with SamProtagonists request to keep the "New Content Priorities (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=8643)" thread clean I've posted this thread to talk about it here.

Personally I love the fact we have a direct link with MM. I think its weird (but a good weird) that we have a small influence over possible future content.

I have to say it's a great way to reasure the fanbase that their opinions are being heard.

Now.... what do you guys and gals think?

I like the pro-active methods MM are taking to receive user feedback. I've only once seen something like that before (a member of the team actively going to fan forums).

I think the things listed are also fairly representative. I'm hoping that Tools wins out in the end. The more tools we get, the more amazing and fun the levels we can make.

It's great that Mm recognises the site as one worthy of such a thread. I'm also agreeing with Gilgamesh in that I'm happy Mm are taking feedback.

Looking at it, tools seem like something alsmost EVERYONE wants, most as their first choice. Personally I want new switches etc.
Bring them on Mm!

TOOLS FTW !!!!!!!

I voted:

1.Tools
2.Gadgets
3.Materials

Tools are by far the most important thing in lbp and without them everything just wouldn't be possible. We would just be running around on simple platforms that would just be different shapes (boring )

Gadgets open up the game and bring new elements to gameplay and are game changers.

Materials are always nice to have as it allows you to make your levels look better without using LOADS of stickers.

Would've put either MUSIC or BACKGROUNDS 4/5

I would LOVE more levels too. The MGS pack was AMAZING.

I put gadgets above tools but it depends what the tools are - a lot of tools can be jury-rigged from crafty combinations of other things, but gadgets (from what we've seen so far) add completely new gameplay mechanics that just can't be created any other way.2009-02-10 18:14:00

True the MGS pack is awesome and I completed every part of it and kept going till I got all the trophies (which I can't say I've done with story mode)

That's mainly due to the paintinator which is a GADGET. Without the paitinator the pack just wouldn't have been liked as much imo. It really surprised everyone and changed the possibilities of the game.

I voted:

- Levels
- Tools
- Materials

I thought levels first, since MM levels are of EXTREMELY high quality, and only a small number of users are able to make such quality levels.

Tools obviously, to make levels better And materials for pretty much the same reason, and they could also open new themes.

Anyway, anxiously waiting to see the results.

(PS: Why didn't he make a poll? Wouldn't that be way easier than scrolling trough every post? There's gonna be a buckload of posts there real soon)

I voted for sound effects as #1 simply because you can change the mood of a level so much with them, especially the always on ones. Like having a warning alarm going during a spooky sequence in a level, or the twinkling sound to let you know you can relax after a hard boss fight (for examples )! Tools of course is something I had a hard time putting in 2nd place, but I think the message is clear that that's something we all want 2009-02-10 18:31:00

I agree with everything you said.
I would appreciate a larger variety of music though, (especially interactive ones!) it does get a bit stale hearing the same things.

But what if they gave us a MIDI-sequencer tool that uses the existing sound objects? I'm sure that could change up the music levels some. 2009-02-10 18:55:00

It would be cool if someone who knows how to take the list of ten items Sam posted and make a poll out of it in a separate thread. To see if we were given the choice of 1 thru 10 of importance how we would have chose all 10 choices.

I chose:

1.Tools
2.Gadgets
3.Levels

But, I would really love to have more materials, background themes and music/sound effects. That was really hard to choose one and not the other.

1. Tools
2. Gadgets
3. Levels

I really love Tools and Gadgets because I love messing with new abilities, and new Levels always bring new stickers and materials. Levels can sometimes bring new music and sound effects, too, so it seemed like a great option overall.

The percentages are a bit messed up.
That's the percent in comparison to the rest of the choices. The one with 100% is the favorite, and the rest are being "compared" against the favorite option.

Tools, gadgets and materials for me.

Tools and gadgets have the biggest impact on how levels can be made and how the game can be played. And of course materials to give us more aesthetic options making levels.

I think adding stickers with DLC is a bit lame, after all importing stickers from images was originally supposed to be a feature but I guess we can probably say goodbye to that now.

It's a win-win situation! We had this going on with motherh over on the playstation forums, who's been discussing Killzone2 with us for the past few years and keeping us posted with what's been going on over at GG. We were constantly giving him feedback to pass on regarding what we wanted to see in KZ2, and after the beta, I have to say it was very gratifying to see that they really listened to their most important players... the hardcore ones.

If MM is going to keep this kind of thing up, it will only serve to make the fans happier and bring MM more money to create more content which makes them more money to create new... etc etc etc.

Win-win situation indeed!

I also agree that we need more music and sound fx. We especially need more musical compositions where we can control the volume of the individual tracks. It would be great if they included an update for the music player where we could also speed up or slow down the tracks to some degree (without any artifacting), but also to choose to loop a certain section of a song. That would be just swell.

I'm really happy Sam took the time to ask for our feedback on this, the best little LittleBIGPlanet forum around.

I agree with Rustbukkit that its a win-win situation. After all it just makes good sense to do market reasearch as to what your customers want.

On a side note I voted tools number 1 but realised that tools are just the leathalise tool and coner editer. All the switches, emitters etc are actually under the gadgets section. This is what makes the game so varied and is what I was thinking of as tools......

I want a revote!

Sam actually defined tools to include switches, while gadgets were described as things like The Paintinator. This implies to me that he's thinking gadgets are more player power up things like the jetpack.

For easy reference, I voted music/sound effects; Tools; Materials. I hope they include more Magic Mouth sound effects with that category.

I didn't put gadgets in my top 3, as I think most things can be worked around with a bit of creativity. The more I think about it, the more I realise I actually made a paintinator prototype in the pancreas bonus section of my digestion level. The paintinator is simply a player held emitter that works similar to a magnetic key with an easily variable AND switch. They just streamlined it to make it easier to do. You can make a paintinator without having a paintinator.

If I had to vote a 4th, I'd actually say backgrounds. The ones we have are pretty limiting. We don't have a normal forest/field background. The closest we have is either the Gardens with their gnomes or the Temples with their statues. More "normal" backgrounds and one like an outer space one would be great.

5th I'd say more objects. We can't make 3D things, and they can really make a level look great if they are used well and stickered cleverly for variety.

All the things I pointed to are basically the hardest ones for us to work around with the tools accessible to the players.

Well, I would have, but we could only pick three. It forces one to priorities, which is not a bad thing.

Players can't make new accessories or objects (3D type). They do add greatly to the visual impact of the level, but they are often overlooked or ignored.

Jaeyden and Donkey Show are two creators off the top of my head that make great use of these, Jaeyden in particular in reguards to objects.

I have always wanted to make 3-D objects. It really adds to visual and playing style of a level.

It's pretty obvious we are all creators here, it looks like almost everyone voted for tools.

I also love how MM is listening to is dedicated players and is actually making decisions in part from our requests. I hope they support this game until the PS4 comes out, then they can make a sequel.

1. Tools
2. Gadgets
3. Music/Sound Effects

We have such a wealth of materials as it is, and considering that each level, to maximize thermometer output, should only have a tiny handful of materials throughout - I would make them very low on my priority list.

We DESPERATELY need more music and sound effects! I run into this more than anything else - defining the mise en scene is my favorite part of the process, and not having the right song or the right available sound effects can be just a killer. I really hope to see more of these in the near future (and NOT game-themed ones like the MGS pack!).

I had to prioritize the list so I didn't include Mm levels, but I would LOOOOVE to see more Mm-created levels. It's just amazing to have those guys continue to throw their hats in with the best of the community-created content. I really hope to see more stuff from them. i know they're creating cool crap all the time, if anything just to test all the patches and changes!

Music and sound effects are definitely the most underapprecited tools. I think people will go a bit bananas listening the the same tunes in every level.

I think more advanced interactive music peices where you can tailor it to how you want it would be great and definitely breath new life into our levels.

You can make a paintinator without having a paintinator. But the fact that you can run and jump and move back and forth through the layers unhindered while holding the paintinator completely changes things compared with a user made magnetic key emitter. You couldn't very well make a run-and-gun style level with just an emitter on a grab switch. At least not a very good one.

Yeah, that too...
I just don't understand why Mm limited the magic mouths so much when the ones in their levels clearly allow so much more text, as well as highlighted text...

It's interesting that none out of the 29 votes on this thread voted for costumes When this is what MM seem to be pushing the most on PSN. Maybe its because theres a better profit margin on them as it takes a lot less effort to produce than something like the paintinator and new levels.....2009-02-16 15:43:00

Yeah, i can imagine that constumes are really easy to make, and only a small team is working on them. Whereas different tools and gadgets need extensive playtesting, an require alot more people to work on them.2009-02-16 15:49:00

Actually the way I see it is that we already get alot of costumes, the more the better, and we don't see it as something that they will stop making regardless of what we ask for, so we ask for something else! Why ask for something we are already getting alot of 2009-02-16 15:50:00

glad to see music and sounds getting a few votes. given the amount of levels compared to songs available there's an awful lot of repetition happening there.

i also use sound effects everywhere. more of these would be great.

I voted for Background Themes, Music/Sound Effects, and Costumes.....2009-02-16 18:14:00

Author:
Lil-Pingin
Posts: 396

Specific things I would like to see added, not in order of importance:

Background themes (the animated backdrop to levels)

1) Outer Space

Materials

1) Dark matter pattern that is a lighter color so stickers can show up better.

2) Bouyant Material: A material that always stays upright (like dark matter, but can do translational, just not rotational, movement)

3) Material: Light, indestructable material. Currently all the explosion resistant materials are heavy.

Gadgets (like the Paintinator)

1) Teleporter (set like paintinator but it teleports you to a linked destination)

2) Shield (allows sackboy to survive one plasma ball before enhancement is lost)

3) Jump Boots (allows sackboy to jump higher/further)

4) Double Jump Boots (allows sackboy to jump once in midair)

5) Please fix the sound error with the current jetpack tool. Creators crush the jetpack to force its removal. If sackboy is holding X when this happens the fast movement sound of the jetpack continues until the level ends/resets.

Objects (like the orange, soccer ball and so on)

1) Paintball, Normal (an object that is the exactly like the paintball that comes from the paintinator. This would enable the use of the paint switch with emitters.)

2) Paintball, Weightless (an object similar to the paintball that comes from the paintinator, but moves like a plasma ball instead of getting pulled down by gravity. Again this would enable the use of the paint switch with emitters).

Tools

1) Counter option on magnetic key switch. Default is 1 but higher numbers could be set, requiring multiple magnetic keys in radius to activate switch. (Maybe disallow option for speed control if too hard. Others should be easy.)

2) Emotion option on proximity switch. Default is any but option would enable people to make the proximity switch only activate if sackboy was at least at a certain emotion level (d-pad options: neutral, angry1-3, happy1-3, scared1-3, sad1-3).

3) Photobooth: allow people to hook "1" switches to the photobooth to better control when it takes a picture.

4) Cutscene Switch: Similar to speech tool, except:
a) less camera limitations (allow it to look anywhere)
b) longer string of characters allowed
c) it has a wire, when the text bubble disappears the switch activates (or even better allow it to be set to activate either at the beginning, end or be on while the text bubble is visible)
d) give the option of whether to allow or disallow sackboy to press o to close text book or to use a timer to close the text box

5) Question Switch: Similar to speech tool, except it opens a simple multiple choice menu that sackboy can navigate and select one of the responses. Each response must have its own wire.

5) Logic Switch Pack. Contains at a bare minimum AND and OR gates that allow multiple switches to be connected to the gate as inputs. There is a wire on the gate, like a switch, for output. I and many users do this with mechanical logic gates currently, but these take up a lot of thermometer in levels. Actual tools would be much better. If there is concern over complexity make it a pack that must be purchased. I would pay money for this as downloadable content.

6) Sticker editor tool: Upgrade the sticker editor to include the corner editor functionality. Also, please give us an option to easily create a material that is the same shape.

7) Race switch: Add switch functionality to the race gate (both start and finish). For start gate allow wire that activates when race begins (after countdown). For finish line allow wire that activates when a player finishes the race.

8) Hover monster part: works like the wheels or leg pieces. It looks like a small rocket thruster, (tiny version of rocket engine tool). Causes the monster to move back and forth but does so while ignoring gravity to make flying monsters. (This can currently be down in a fairly complex manner using hidden background layers or with pistons, neither particularly easy to use for the average player.)

9) Emitter error check override option: Level creators often know that objects will move but the game does not allow emitted objects to be set to appear overlapping another object. This is good, but it should give a warning, like a sound or color flash, but still allow the creator to take this action. For example, in a level I am making I am trying to place emitters that will emit into a spot that contains dissolve material. The only way I can do this is to move the dissolve material myself, place the emitter and set the emit object, and then go back and replace the dissolve material.

10) Absolute versus relative option on emitters. When placing emitted objects one should have the option of placing relative to the emitter or in a specific spot in the level (extremely useful for moving emitters).

11) Momentum transfer option on emitters. Emitter can be set to have emitted object ignore any movement of the emitter itself and only use the linear/angular setting.

12) Sackboy capture tool: creates an object that appears like sackboy, including his current costume/pose.

13) Invisible option on connectors.

14) A way to link creator levels by beating the level. When you complete the level it opens a new one just like in the real game.

15) "Try Again" Exit Gate. For multipath levels, an exit gate that doesn't count as beating level. (You don't get rewards and it doesn't open up the next stage.)

Stickers

1) Sticker page needs to be updated so trigger stickers appear on the first page. Currently they appear on one of the last pages for community stickers. Also, it would be nice to reduce the loading times of trigger stickers. Currently no one can make a community level using a bullet type community sticker because the of the load time on community stickers. We don't need the loadtime reduced across the board, just on trigger stickers.

2) Option to use stickers on the planet where your published levels appear (would only appear if people searched "find more by this author" and similar options).
