Magnetic key placing

Archive: 14 posts

Hi fellows, I've got another nice issue to contemplate. I've got a bit of a balloon flight in my current project. The balloon is controlled by magnetic keys (rockets go on if no key is in range, they go off if there is.). This works perfectly except for one problem.

At the moment the magnetic keys are placed on patches of thin, back layer, dark matter. Offcourse this looks terrible. I want to create an image of flying through open air so some kind of thin layer wall is out of the question. Is there a way of invisibly suspending magnetic keys somehow?

What I could do is use a cloud sticker, put it on a thin piece of cardboard, cut that out nicely and put the magnetic keys on them. Problem with that is that I will need quite a bit of clouds, nearly filling the entire space. If I choose for that, what would be the most elegant (and thermo effecient, i'm nearly out) way to suspend those clouds...

Solutions are preferred in sequential order (so if someone knows a good awnser to the first question, the second is no longer needed etc.)

You can make dark matter invisible by making it ultra-thin using the corner editor. I don't know how this behaves with magnetic keys attached to it though.2009-02-10 14:22:00

Can't you have clouds on other layers than your balloons? I mean having clouds seems like a good idea anyways? Just put the keys on them. You can make them out of dark matters and stick them a white sticker. This way you don't need to "suspend" them.

Whoa that was quick, thanks.

Ultra thin dark matter is no option because that becomes a huge problem when you slightly want to alter it.

I should have said, the balloon is 3 layers thick so the only options I have is front thin layer and back thin layer. Dark matter looks a bit ugly, even when stickered, but it might be the only option indeed .

Keep at it

Ok I will work my way around then. LOL

Can't you make the balloon not using that many layers?

What about turning the dark matter into white gas?2009-02-10 14:36:00

The balloon is one of the premade "object" balloons, it's three layers, nothing you can do .

Thin layer dark matter -> white gas might be great.... It may even look good with the right modelling.. Great Idea, will definatly try this out, I'm not sure if the magnetic keys will stick to gas though...

I did something like this recently. This is about the same as the thin-dark matter idea above. I made a square of dark matter and put the key on it. Then I shrunk it down so that the dark matter completely disappeared, but the key can still be adjusted. To move it around, I highlight the area it is in and I can drag it to other locations. Mainly, the same as thin dark matter but each key is on 1 single little piece of invisible dark matter.2009-02-10 16:12:00

If you stick the key before turning it into gaz it will stay there.

Problem is that you for some reason aren't allowed to make thin layer gas ...

If you want to go for the clouds the best way to suspend them will probably be a really thin dot of dark matter placed on the very edge of the cloud, so that you can't see that there is a tiny rectangular hole that must be filled with invisible dark matter . Whole clouds of dark matter wouldn't look that good so this is better as you can choose whichever material you want.

But personally i would go for the suggestion that CCubbage had, it would look best as you wont need to fill the whole sky with clouds.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've worked something out. I do use clouds of polystyrene with a small spot of dark matter in them. To make it more controllable I've put the clouds below the area you'll be flying in. To control the thrust from the rockets I set 2 mag. switches on the balloon to "speed" and made the radius huge. This way the rockets nicely control the balloons height. By careful placing of the clouds I can control the height and even the horizontal movement of the balloon, and it automatically compensates somewhat from the different weight when playing multiplayer.

Thin layer gas indeed does not exist and that stopped me from doing it that way .

and made the radius huge

This was what I was thinking when you said you didn't want things visible, but still retain easy accessibility. I wasn't sure how you'd implement it in a controllable fashion, and I imagine it'd take quite a bit of tweaking... but hey, if you got it to work, hooray!

How about thin clouds, on th very back layer?

Surely that would work?

Well the tweaking wasn't that bad at all. A balloon with rockets is a lot easier than just a rocket ship or something. It always has the tendency to stay upright and it won't go up or down uncontrollably unless you really screw up. By unevenly distributing the weight I can easily make it go left or right.2009-02-12 07:31:00
