PS3 and HDMI, TV compatabilities? *Flickering Problem, help?*

Archive: 14 posts

Hey people,
Two days ago I bought an LG HDTV (LG40, 26" with 780p) and I'm having problems running my PS3 through it. Either the screen constantly flashes all black, or sometimes it'll just all go black and stay that way, along with a crackling in the audio. I'm also using a brand-new HDMI v1.3 cable I bought from Radioshack.

Any advice? I've read that there used to be a major "handshaking" issue with LG tvs, but it was since fixed in a firmware update. I've also tried unplugging/plugging back in to no avail. Any advice? Do some brands just not work with a PS3?

In any case I'm considering exchanging this since there are better TVs for less, but I want to be sure I get something that works with the console.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the replies, I will try friends' TVs and cables to see if I can isolate the issue.

Unfortunately I don't have any other HD devices to test the HDMI connection with here... I bought this mainly for games/movies through the PS3.

make sure the ps3 is set to automatically select its resolution it maybe be trying to display in 1080p or something that the TV can not handle.2009-02-09 17:48:00

It actually goes all screwy if I set it to "automatic" but it will display if I choose "custom" and select 780p....hmm..

That is kinda weird, sounds like it might be a firmware problem still try to make sure that both the PS3 and the TV have the most up to date firmware for them.2009-02-09 18:06:00

hmmm I guess the next step would be to try a different cable like the other people said, just seems weird that it works in 720p but wont when you change it.2009-02-09 18:22:00

Your TV is 720p native resolution.

This means that if you chose a higher resolution with the PS3 it will not work. It will not work if you also try 480i.

Now you need to check 3 things in order the determine where the problem is.

1- Try with 2 different HDMI cables so you can prove it's not your cable.

2- Try your PS3 in 2 different HDTVs so you can prove it's not the PS3.

3- Try number 2 with both HDMI cables.

I really doubt the problem would be the PS3. It's either the cables or your TV... or you failing at putting it all in a working set.

Hey guys, I just got off the phone with a Sony CSR and we narrowed down the problem to my cable possibly not supporting HDCP... I'm going to get another cable that is sure to and I'll see how that works.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I really appreciate it. Also I only ever tried to run it in 720p.

Alrighty, so I returned my HDMI cable to radioshack and replaced it with....... nothing. Their only other options were the $80+ Monster cables which is a total ripoff... so I decided to hold out until I could find an HDCP compatible cable and I think I found the winner right here: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2638405&tab=support

Thoughts? If it's advertised specifically for the PS3, I'm going out on a limb and assuming it supports HDCP and v1.3 of the HDMI standard.

Thank you so much for that link, I decided to buy that one on the spot.

I thought about buying online before since I know they are far cheaper, but I was hesitant because it might be frustrating or impossible to return if I have issues, but this store has a really good return policy.
