Single Layer Wheels?
Archive: 19 posts
I'm trying to create a cinematic portion of a level and was wondering if anyone has approached or had any ideas on how to make single layer wheels... or at least something that emulates it. One idea I had was to create a circle, and make the center of it hollow/filled with glass and make the boarder between the top of the wheel and the object that I want to roll out of glass as well. I don't know how long this would work tho. Any ideas? Your help is greatly appreciated, since I know any bolts are out. | 2009-02-09 14:36:00 Author: Inspectigater Posts: 126 |
If you want to go for simplicity, I would suggest simply putting creature wheels with a creature brain to control it. Other then that, I've been experimenting a bit with a self-propelled wheel mechanism using a winch, but I haven't gotten to the prototyping stage yet. | 2009-02-09 15:06:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
Using the creature wheel is the only way you can make a "one layer wheel" because if you use any other way you'll need to attache the wheel to an adjacent layer. . | 2009-02-09 15:11:00 Author: RangerZero Posts: 3901 |
Gilgamesh... care if I send you the one I made a long time ago, to look at? | 2009-02-09 15:14:00 Author: Unknown User |
Hmm creature wheels. That's a good idea, and could probably work. Nothing goes screwy when you emit a creature with a short lifetime and that expires, does it? I would assume no, but I've never tried. So Gilgamesh, were you thinking to use the winch as a piston that pulls the opposite end of the wheel and lets out slack to give it room to roll? | 2009-02-09 15:20:00 Author: Inspectigater Posts: 126 |
Gilgamesh... care if I send you the one I made a long time ago, to look at? Sure, you can even send it through LBP now that I know where I have to go to get the objects I receive. The one I'm working on doesn't really allow anything to be attached to the wheel though. I was planning more on using it as a kind of obstacle/enemy. A giant wheel that chases you around and tries to crush you. | 2009-02-09 15:22:00 Author: Gilgamesh Posts: 2536 |
That works, since that's exactly what I originally intended it for and never did use it for. It's not single plane, but is self propelled. The only thing I ever used it for was the wheels on my Train Yourself level, because it looked cool and I had no idea what I was doing back then... it would have been alot easier just to use regular wheels lol. | 2009-02-09 15:45:00 Author: Unknown User |
Duh... I'm making this way more complicated than it has to be. Glass on glass + tiny hidden rockets. Problem solved. Thanks for the help! | 2009-02-09 16:25:00 Author: Inspectigater Posts: 126 |
I've never tried, but can you put rockets and creature brains on the thin plane? They look thick plane only to me, but as I said, I've never tried it. | 2009-02-10 06:35:00 Author: Elbee23 Posts: 1280 |
I don't think so, but for what he's building it will be acceptable to attach the rocket to the thin layer using another plane. | 2009-02-10 17:28:00 Author: Risen Posts: 251 |
No, you can't put creature brains on a thin plane... nor can you put creature wheels there... I suppose it not being a PLAYABLE layer it kind of makes sense. lol. >.< | 2009-02-10 19:32:00 Author: Inspectigater Posts: 126 |
You could perhaps make tracks for whatver you're building. Are you going to hide the mechanics part in the back layer or something? | 2009-02-10 20:15:00 Author: S-A-S--G-U-N-R Posts: 1606 |
you can do it using springs outer rim and an inner circle... then springs which rotate around so they are all pulling it in a certain direction... although it takes A LOT of tweaking to get it right. Cheers! | 2009-02-11 02:19:00 Author: RAINFIRE Posts: 1101 |
What about a glass circle inside a hollowed out glass encasement, like some kind of ball and socket joint. If you make the "socket" around 3/4 around the circle it should remain enclosed. This should work . If it's unclear what I mean, just ask for clarification. | 2009-02-11 10:37:00 Author: Wyth Posts: 263 |
You mean like this wyth? http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=276&pictureid=2242 the blue, of course, representing glass If that is what you meant, that is essentially what I was getting at in my original post XP | 2009-02-11 14:46:00 Author: Inspectigater Posts: 126 |
Whoopsiedaisy, That was exactly what I was going for Guess I suck at reading today than... Great idea you have then . I guess that should work good enough... It ain't pretty though... | 2009-02-11 14:54:00 Author: Wyth Posts: 263 |
Truth be told, I havent sat down and tried many of these ideas aside from the rocket one, which was a little too unpredictable for me. I've got monday off, so I'll be doing some hardcore building while home alone all day. Yay! | 2009-02-11 14:56:00 Author: Inspectigater Posts: 126 |
I'm not sure that glass thing would work... since circles are actually made of a bunch of vertices instead of being completely round, I'd expect it to get caught up and just drag along. | 2009-02-16 14:16:00 Author: Risen Posts: 251 |
I'm not sure if it's so much that the wheels get hung up as they just don't really work. When the wheels are on ground, they spin fairly well, although not being a propelled object, they still run out of inertia and stop reasonably quickly. When you place them on glass, they simply just don't spin at all, and you gain nothing from doing it. So for a short term single layer wheel, yes they will work... but they aren't optimal | 2009-02-16 15:06:00 Author: Inspectigater Posts: 126 |
