I just received a rough cut from a film I shot back in the fall, so I thought I'd post some screenshots here. I'm a Vancouver-based filmmaker, I write-direct my own short films, and I've done gigs as a cinematographer on short films, and have worked as a grip, electric, 1st assistant camera, and 2nd assistant camera on a wide variety of shows, from tv to feature films to music videos to more short films. I don't work on set much anymore, especially in a big role like cinematographer, so I only go out if it's a really special project. This movie's a "pre-apocalypse" story. Takes place in a pseudo-40s/50s alternate-reality America in which nuclear holocaust is nigh. It takes place at a remote military listening station called Victory Point. It's a quiet dialogue movie between 2 characters mostly on a beach. It's basically a film about these 2 guys sitting at the edge of the world watching the sky fall. It was an INCREDIBLY low-budget film, but I think we got some great images, and the movie's looking really nice in the rough cut. WOOT WOOT!! Low budget films are just cool movies that never get famous... I would watch this one if i could, but i live in the U.S and this looks like its from europe or something

I would watch this one if i could, but i live in the U.S and this looks like its from europe or something. Haha - I'll take that as a compliment! We actually found some really cool locations for this. It's all shot right up here in the Pacific Northwest. One of our earliest conceptions for the look of the movie was that we'd utilize the strenghts of the climate up here rather than fight it. So many people shoot movies up here, and work extra hard to AVOID the gloom and the grey. There's a haunting, ghostly light up here 9 months out of the year. Billowing layers of grey going off to the horizon, green mountains shrouded in fog, slivers of clarity to the West at nearly every sunset. It never REALLY rains up here like most people think - it just DRIZZLES and MISTS. I actually hate living in it, but cinematically it can be beautiful. The location is a place called Whidbey Island, gorgeous place. The beach we shot on was the very same one used in the movie Snow Falling on Cedars, shot by one of my hero cinematographers (Robert Richardson). It was an unspeakable thrill to be shooting in the same location as he had - I always ask myself, "how would ___ have lit and shot this location?", but in this case I had an answer - all I had to do was turn on Snow Falling and watch those beach scenes for the millionth time. It's still fairly early in post, despite the fact that it was shot last fall (everyone's so busy and the crew and budget are just tiny-tiny). It's going to be a 20-minute short film, and we intend to get it in as many festivals as possible, particularly in the Northwest. Expect it in Seattle, Vancouver, and Portland film festivals. Definitely be submitting to Texas festivals too, at Texas A&M as well as Austin (I hail from them parts). Let me know where you guys live and I'll make sure to submit it to festivals in your area if you're interested in checking it out later in the year on the big screen.
