F4F: The Uncanny Contraption

Archive: 12 posts

Hello, this is Shining Aquas. Those of you who read the reviews section of the forums know how much I enjoy reviewing levels. Those same people also probably know how absurd it is of me to actually make one.

The Uncanny Contraption is a stage done in the style of Rube Goldberg contraptions. The way the level works is you turn the level on, then put down the controller, and after a series of pre-assembled launches and flying sackboys, you will reach the end. It may sound boring, but try out the stage anyway, you might be surprised by it.

This level was really more of a side project than an actual level, and more than anything it was simply an excuse to be somewhat artistic instead of my normal challenge level scheme. The entire level was done in the style of neon lighting and was attempting to copy the potential feel of maybe PixelJunk Eden or perhaps Lumines. Granted, I still feel the level stands out in it's own unique ways and it is certainly visually pleasing.

Whoaaa... turn on the lights. I saw it had two stars, and that's gotta be why. Delete it and republish it, it doesn't need such a bad start with two stars.

I did't touch the controller... my sackboy missed the horizontal springboard and fell back down, elevator picked me up again, and he was hit right this time. This is pretty cool, but after the second vehicle (the one after the skateboard) my sackboy hit a glass slide and just rolled into the electricity, a few feet short of the next trigger. I respawned, and now the skateboard's not there.

Restart... this time my sackboy didn't land on the second vehicle at all. He's sitting in the corner behind the left tire. I tried to get on it, but it detects me and starts rolling before I can jump on.

3rd time, I've hit the electricity again, I'm guessing I have to run and jump from this glass to make it.

4th time, I'm getting ready to try and run on the glass this time... I missed the vehicle again.

5th time, into the electricity... running won't work, I somehow missed the glass slide and am walking on the foil ground.

6th time the floatie through the plasmas overshot the vehicle... but I did manage to land on the vehicle... and bam, I'm in the electricity again.

7th time I missed the vehicle.

Ok, 8th time... I missed the vehicle again, and just ran past it, jumped on the spring pad myself, overshot the slide, hit the jumper pad, it shot me back to some sliding wall, dropped me down to another one and I hit the same jumper pad and launched into the clear zone.

Strange. Very strange. I tested this thing extensively for consistency. Didn't have any problems.

Alright, the level is being deleted and republished, but not immediately because I need to look into the errors that Ninja submitted.

Okay, the entire level has been scanned over....8 times.
It should work now, provided you don't TOUCH anything on the controller.

If there are still problems, let me know.

Well I tried it again and landed on the electricity again.... but retried it again, and this time it worked just fine. Then I did it again for a third time... electricity.... doesn't seem very reliable.

But glitch aside, cool level man. I really liked the multi-colored plasma balls. I plan on making a Rube Goldbergish level in the future. Mine will probably be more like dominoes, but we'll see. That's still quite aways away. I've got other ideas I'm going to be working on first.

My only suggestion (aside from fixing the electricity bug) is to perhaps brighten up the level a bit, so the player can see what's going on.

I had no issue going through. It was fun, but on a level like this you want to see whats going on and I couldn't a good third of the time. I'd suggest either brightening or adding in some more lights. This didn't stop me from hearting though as I want to see how this level improves. Try my level Little Lil' Planet if you get a chance.2009-02-09 03:37:00

I've had about an 85-90% success rate on it, so I'm under the impression that it works enough of the time to be a success in general.
If I find anything that will significantly raise the consistency, I will do so.

Brightened it up a bit, but it was originally dark for the neon light effect.

Okay, here's what I do for the F4F system, in this case I'll leave this choice up to you:
Either I can put down a couple of quick lines now, or I can add your level to my queue list in the reviews section and give it a very thorough inspection.

Cool, I'll try it again today after work, and let you know exactly where i think the problem is.

As for the F4F thing, you can throw me in your line for reviews, just as long as it makes it into my thread I'm happy hard to get a bump sometimes

Nice and smoothe, and really fun to watch. The dissolve catch at the skateboard, the funnel after the floatie, and I think the skateboard gets hit harder now, and the spring pad after the vehicle launches me much higher. It worked perfectly now, and looks great with the lights up a little.

I just did it like 6 times, it's fun to watch and requires no interaction lol... but on one turn I missed the funnel over the vehicle somehow. I guess it's just the physics man, that forced randomization. I also noticed that on the launch pad after the vehicle dissolves, it launches me higher but I still don't land in the glass "tube" part that seems intended... I always just barely catch the nose of the glass spring-board that launches me back to the left. It works, either way, but just thought I'd point it out.

I tried it now, and it was very fun! I didn't press anithing, and the level worked very well on 1st try. If you want some tips, add some sounds to your level, you can make it more fun!
You can add some lights effects too, stickers, all do you want to make a better grapich.
This level is without player interaction, so make it the coolest possible to watch

Maybe I'll throw in some fireworks in a later revision. My week's pretty busy so I can't really work on it much till the weekends come around. If possible, I'll see if I can create Ver 1.02 by the end of Sunday, but don't hold your breath.2009-02-10 02:42:00
