Sam School and who gets beta

I try to read as many threads as possible (this one included), but if you could avoid "Yo Sam, over here" style titles it'd help a lot as it's good to know what the subject of the thread is before I dive in - that way I can get to the important stuff first.

As for who gets into the beta... no comment. Sorry.

in response to welcome
Thanks. I'll do my best to get answers to any questions you guys have in the run up to the game.

Enemies

It's hard to describe exactly how to build enemies because the options are huge.
LittleBigPlanet effectively allows you to create almost anything mechanical you can imagine - if you apply yourself. So if you wanted an enemy to be destroyed by a particular type of rock, that can be done, if you wanted them to have a weak point, that's doable, there really are very few limitations if you think about it.

Demo

Meanwhile on the subject of the demo, it simply isn't practical for a game like this to create a demo, as it is precisely the scale of what you can achieve that makes the game what it is. Playing the pre-created levels whether on your own or multiplayer is enormous amounts of fun but it doesn't represent the game enough to be used as a demo, similarly Create can keep you entertained for months on end if your ideas keep coming on strong, but without including all the tools it comes up short in showing you what there is in the game.

Effectively the only way to demo the game is to show the whole game, which is exactly what we're trying to do with videos. Still, if you're not convinced, why not wait for reviews before deciding if the game is for you or not.

[referring to demo without create mode]
That's certainly one route to take, however if you hadn't heard of LBP and tried the demo to see what all the fuss was about you'd be forgiven for thinking that it was just a platform game.

Beta

I can't give any more information than I already have. The last thing I want to do is give you any kind of false expectation about the LBP beta as the details aren't yet final and it wouldn't be right for me to imply there was a shot for people to get in if in fact there isn't. 08-15-2008

Don't get too excited - we're definitely not doing a free-for-all beta with LBP, but we are going to expand the number of participants to thoroughly test online systems in the near future.08-14-2008

Beta vs. Demo

The beta is not a demo. Demos and betas are not the same thing.

A beta test is an extension of the testing of the game which allows us to ensure that online functions work. The reason these are opened up is to get weight of numbers to join an online service at the same time in order to properly test it - even with an internal test team of 200 you won't be able to ensure that a game is going to be fully functional online, which is where beta tests come in.

If you join a beta test expecting some kind of extended demo you will be disappointed, a beta exists solely to test the game, nothing more.

EU Beta?

No it's not - at least not yet.

We've been running internal beta tests so far, but that is going to change. The precise nature of future beta testing I can't reveal yet, but it won't be limited to just one country or continent.

Demo/Beta Answers

The LittleBigPlanet beta has been running internally for a while now and we're soon going to open it up to a wider crowd. No, it won't be a turn up and get in kind of deal but it will be large enough that many people from around the world will get in. More details on this stage of the beta are not available yet.

As for a demo, there will not be a demo for LittleBigPlanet before the game releases. Due to the complexity and scale of the game it is very difficult to represent it well covering off every aspect of the game.

Online Only Play?

First off, to describe LBP as a "mostly online" game isn't quite right. It's a split between online and offline pretty much. If you don't have your PS3 connected online you're only really missing out on the incredible library of creations that Share will become - there's still plenty of game and the whole of Create to play with.

Websites?

Plenty of changes coming to the LBP official website. Right now, the site doesn't have a massive amount of info, so the US is using it's news blog as their official site for the time being. 08-18-2008 08:23 AM

Sackboy Attacks and Picking Up Objects

So, some answers....

Sackboy attacks is quite a large question, as it depends what you're referring to. If it's Sackboy vs badguys then it will be upto the designer of the badguys as to how you defeat them. However if it's Sackboy vs Sackboy it's no so much an attack more of a playfight idea with slapping (or perhaps a mischievous application of stickers/decorations).

You refer a couple of times to Sackboy picking things up, and that's not really his bag. Pushing and pulling are what Sackboy does best, he's not one for picking things up. So your cattle prod idea might need developing to put it on wheels so he can push it around.

As for putting all questions in one thread... please don't! It makes it easier to find the questions if they're the thread title, so a seperate thread for individual topics or questions is ideal.

Fat Sackboys?

Different body shapes aren't part of the plan - Sackboy is Sackboy! Some of the chunkier costumes can bulk your Sackperson up a bit, but not to the degree I think you're after.

Do objects have mass and weight?

The answer in short, is yes.

Some materials are moveable, others aren't. Weight/mass is dictated by the type of material you use and its size. I'm not going to reveal any more, as half the fun will be working out the logistics of this for yourselves.

Level Making

Making an entire level is a very big undertaking, but very much worth it when you're done. Personally I'm really enjoying building contraptions, vehicles and Sackboy catapults

Delays?

Nobody likes delays, it's no fun at all, however we'll only let LittleBigPlanet out into the wild when it's ready. Better to delay and get it right, than go "on time" and leave people disappointed.

I'm not saying there will be any more delay, nor am I saying there won't be. Until the official date is announced it is, however, a possibility.

Creating Rain

Here's how I'd do rain with what's available right now :

1 - create a raindrop out of cardboard that looked pretty convincing.
2 - elevate my level a little so that raindrops land beneath the level of play
3 - set up an emitter to unleash the rain

Might not be actual water but it'll look pretty effective if you get it right.

Banning

While I'm not going to go into the nitty gritty of SCE moderation policy, there is a sliding scale of bans that can be applied ranging from one day to permanent, in a single game, to everything and more besides.

The simple fact of the matter is that it's neither big nor clever to break acceptable usage rules, and doing so could result in your content being removed, online publishing privileges revoked, PSN account banned or worse. So if you're considering being that kind of user... don't.

"Release Date"?

It's a common misconception that a "worldwide" release date means the same day.

North America tends to release new games into store on a Tuesday, while the UK goes on Friday, Scandinavia on Thursday and so on around the world. The upshot is that a worldwide release date actually means worldwide release week.

Anyway, for LBP, yes we're looking at a worldwide date.

Release Date

This is going to be a popular topic, with speculation coming from all over the place until the official date is announced, so please see this thread as your reliable source for when the game will be released.

Right now the only official release date is October. More specifically than that has not yet been announced, so unless you've read it on PlayStation.com, or LittleBigPlanet.com or MediaMolecule.com it's not the official date.

I'll update this post as soon as a date is announced.08-15-2008

Mutliplayer Camera Mechanics

In multiplayer, online or offline, the camera centres around the host Sackboy (player 1). The angle of the camera expands to encompass all the other players as much as it can, after which other players go off the screen and have 5 seconds to return or else they pop/burst/die/however you want to describe it.

It's very important, therefore, to stick together on fast moving areas - or at least stick close to player 1.

Media Molecule Info [referring to LBPC Exclusive Interview!]

Just to give some extra info on the interview, Mark is the Creative Director at Media Molecule, and Siobhan is the Executive Producer. Might not be the most fascinating info ever, but it's always good to know who does what

3rd Person and Scripted Camera

3rd person is probably not viable at all, however a cam move to show another area of a level where something interesting is happening might well be. I'll pass the idea on and see what happens. 08-15-2008

Hi guys - Sam from SCE here - in answer to the original question, not it's not possible to do an over-shoulder/3rd person viewpoint in the game. Some of the videos we've put out so far include unusual angles in order to better show off the expressions and characterisations of Sackboy which were done with a development version of the game.08-14-2008

Camera Zoom?

Close ups still happen as part of the game (it "understands" when you might want to zoom in) however some of the angles seen were purely to show off characters, and won't be in the game.

Lag?

No, there won't be. One of the last things to deal with is optimisation of the game which is pretty much what Mm are working on right now. The freezes (calling it lag would be kind) that are showing in the video playing are as a result of the code and graphics not being optimised fully.

Uploading to Youtube?

Uploading to YouTube is not a feature the game will have at launch. It has however come up on several occasions as a request/suggestion from the LBP community so it's sat in the big heap of potential updates to the game after it releases. We've got lots in store for keeping the game fresh and keeping you entertained once the game is out, so just because something isn't available when the game first comes out doesn't mean it'll never see the light of day.

Contests in the Game?

Contests, challenges, featured creators... lots of ways for you to show off

PSN Add?

Thanks for the welcome all. By all means put in a PSN request, you never know, you might see me online...

Rocketships Fun?

Especially when you use rocket engines to move them around

The one I'm working on right now needs three players to control - it's waaaaayyy too big but I'm just trying it out.

Cutscenes?

No cutscenes that I can think of, however there are plenty of videos you can trigger in-game which act as tutorials.

LBP Shooter? More Airship Love

Nothing wrong with shooters at all - in fact it wouldn't surprise me if someone found a way to create a shooter using LittleBigPlanet. All the tools are there and you'd have to give it some thought. The only limitation would be that you couldn't give Sackboy a weapon for him to carry around, but cannons, tanks, planes and all sorts of military hardware can be built if that's your thing.

Personally I spend my entire time making airships.

Storymode?

Yes there is a story behind the developer made levels, and it really helps to tie them together. The story may not be the most important thing, but it's still good to have.

Storymode CoOp?

Yes, you can play through the whole story in multiplayer using a combination of local and internet players.

Shared Items Found In CoOp?

Finally, yes - if someone grabs an item you don't already have in a level while playing multiplayer you all receive it.

*Music? 720p or 1080p?

"BasketballMVP wrote:
Well to answer your first question, it'll be running at 720p and 30 frames per second I believe."

Confirmed.

In answer to the question regarding the soundtrack, yes There will be various artists and genres and an original soundtrack , and music is in-game!

Awesome thread.

My favorite part:

North America tends to release new games into store on a Tuesday, while the UK goes on Friday, Scandinavia on Thursday and so on around the world. The upshot is that a worldwide release date actually means worldwide release week.

I hope this means we get the games before all you Euros out there (not trying to be mean, but I might die if I'm forced to wait four days listening to everyone talk about how great it is) instead of you getting it before us.

Various artists and GENRES? Most AWESOME. Maybe we'll see a little bit of everything... Not just poppy rock or hip-hoppy stuff. This is really great, I hope the music library is big enough to not bore the players with the same songs...2008-08-20 06:54:00
