Do you use the grid?

Archive: 20 posts

I only recently started using the grid for my creations and it amazed me how much it helped, but it also amazed me how clunky it can be to use (having to press start and select it to turn it on and off, how slow it scrolls etc.)

So I'm wonding what you guys think about the grid, do you use it all the time or do you avoid it and trust your own steady hand to do the work?

yeah I only started to use it and found it a help but like you said its not very user accessible, way to many button presses to get it on and off.2009-02-07 15:50:00

I use to freehand. I just could not understand the grid.

But I've overcome that though, and it helps a tonne in creating stuff in a precise way. It allows you to precisely join objects without actually attaching them, which really helps against the unglue bug.

It's also an incredible tool for measuring and building with a sense of scale. I just don't think I could live with it any more. That and front view (as well as the corner editor, which I need to work on) are seriously under-valued and yet incredibly powerful tools to work with.

Certainly it's not perfect. Sometimes when you come back to a level for another days work the starting point of the grid will have changed, meaning most of your work will need to be re-alligned.

You do get over the start/change/start thing after a while. The more you use it the less you think about what it is your doing with this grid or that grid, and the more you just start using it as another tool to make even better levels. No longer do you think, "I need this bit to fit into here, and this to be this long in relation to this", you simply turn on grid and make it all precisely correct.

Enough raving though. Use grid. Seriously.

Seriously, no I don't. But that's because I have such precise movement of the joystick that I can make a straight line perfectly
Also, I never realised it was there until around 15 hours into creating, and I never got in the habit of using the grid. I can see how it would help people who want really accurate levels, but it's not for me.

nice poll

first i didnt like the grids and created freehand

but now i create with the grid most of the time, cause its a lot easier, cleaner and looks better (sometimes you still need to do something freehand to make it look cool)
switch systems: designing many switch systems without a grid tool is a huge pain in the *** so use them !!!! ;D

I usually use the grid to roughly make a section and then use the corner editing tool without the grid to make it look nice and work like intended, finetuning jumps etc. Actually i mostly use the corner editing tool for everything in the level, I only use the grid to plaace the materials and to get a base to work from.
Of course i also use it for custom switches, enemies and other mechanics which need to be precise.

I didn't use the grid when I started... it didn't make much sense and seemed limiting.

Now I use it almost all the time. It's extremely useful for trying to close up seams, aligning objects, or make geometrically accurate objects, connecting pistons in a straight line, etc.. I find its great for roughing out things and making machinery, and about a hundred other things I can't even think to list right now.

To put it simply, it speeds up certain creations and lets you do some things that are impossible otherwise.

I just realised that i have a certain combination of buttons i always press to activate or de-activate the grid... I'm getting fast with this xD2009-02-07 18:49:00

The grid can be useful but it depends on what you're doing at the time.

I'll sometimes turn it on if Im making some sort of machine, which often requires alot of precision. There's alot of points in my creations so far where they wouldnt work right if they werent exact, so that's where the grid comes in for me.

I only use it when making certain things, like music levels or huge structures or stairs. 2009-02-08 09:41:00

I use it as a level alot, to shave off edges and create small pieces to embed into other freehand objects, and always use it to relevel an object that I tilted while moving. I sometimes as a counter for symmetry purposes. I also use it when disassembling items on complex machinery in a way that makes it easier to keep track of where they where when reassembling them. If you move3 the entire object with grid activated, horizontally and vertically... then count out how many spaces a certain piece has been moved when you disconnect it, then it will almost always be perfectly back in line when you slide it back in place using the grid.

I basically use it as a ruler.

For me, I haven't been in the habit of using the grid until just recently. I almost always use it when making lifts or attaching pistons to anything. As NinjaMicWZ mentioned, I also use it to re-align objects that have been rotated.

Scrolling with the grid is so incredibly slow that I keep it to a minimum because I just tend to get impatient with it. But for that crucial fine-point straight-arrow kind of work, it saves a LOT of headache by eliminating the need to eyeball if something is juuust right.

The corner-editor is my best friend and favorite tool, and I use it on EVERYTHING. I wish I had begun using it in A Very Sony Christmas. I did nearly all of the sculpting in that level by carving with shapes. Bad times! I very rarely use any shapes aside from the square. I always start with a square or rectangle, and whatever shape I want, I'll sculpt with the corner editor.

Very seldom.
Only if I have trouble getting pistons accurately straight to be honest.
I'd probably use it if there was a "very small" version

THE GRID FTW!!!!!!!! (that's also a sneaky bit of advertising, as I'm making a level atm called THE GRID ) and as you can imagine I have been using it all the time for that level

I love the grid and use it all the time as I'm crazy and hate things to be out of proportion I do rely on it too much though actually

Also I must admit that I've have never used the corner editing tool since the tutorials  and this thread has made me think about having a big play about with it and realise it's potential as from some peoples comments on here I have clearly overlooked it's potential

i love the grid, it makes creating much easier. the only time i wont use the grid is when im making bumpy surfaces, making an enemy, or when its being a pain when im placing stickers2009-02-08 14:57:00

I use it way too much to be honest, i just think levels tend to look unpolished really quick if you don't use it. Also, depending on the style you want your level to be....

If you want a nature-themed level, it's unlikely you will use it alot, but simplistic looking things will practically NEED the grid. (also, i only use the small grid, as the bigger ones are way to clumsy in m opinion.)

I only use the grid sometimes, mainly when I'm building objects that need to be symmetrical. The main thing that annoys me is like what Elbee23 said about the alignment of the grid changing.

I'd also like to see a shortcut for changing the grid size. Something like L1+R1+Up/Down or something. (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/member.php?u=1328)

The grid is god. Anything I can do in grid, I will do in grid. It leads to less polygon use and a cleaner, more professional look to levels.2009-02-09 02:54:00

It's a tool just like anything else. There are things you can't do with it on, there are things you can't do without it. So yes, I definitely use it.2009-02-09 17:18:00

Hmm. No I don't use the grid, but maybe I should...
