Street Fighter IV Discussion - UPDATED w IGN Review (9.3!)

Archive: 170 posts

So who's getting it? I played it a few weeks ago in one of the arcades here and although I was not that impressed with the new visual style Capcom chose it has since grown on me and I am really pumped for this game.

The last Street Fighter game I owned/played was Alpha 3 on PS1. To this day it is probably the fighting game that I invested the most time into. The World Tour mode was ingenious and added so much replay value (and I am disappointed they are not implementing this into SFIV) and the character customization was really robust.

I have been watching vids of SFIV and I have to say the super attacks are looking pretty crazy. This has always been my favorite part of fighting games: timing your super attack just right and decimating your enemy with a flashy, over-the-top move. It looks like SFIV will not disappoint in this regard.

It will be available in Japan next week so I will have head start on all of you ha ha ha (sorry lol). Curious to know if anyone else is as excited as I am

I'm am sure that I will be getting it or playing my brother's copy if he gets it. I've been looking through the videos and so far I am impressed by Abel. He has great moves and even has a move that launches an opponent into his Ultra.2009-02-05 18:16:00

*gasp* and you call yourself a gamer!? (just kidding, don't take that too seriously lol). I can only assume that you are not a big fan of fighting games.

Nothing like Tekken. Street Fighter is 2D (except when they experimented with 3D which did not turn out so good) and it is considered the first fighting game franchise and the best, especially where older gamers like me are concerned. If your not a fan of fighters then this probably won't change your mind though. 2009-02-06 09:30:00

You do realize that is a 14 year-old game right? But I guess if the gameplay did not grab you then the wicked graphics of SFIV won't make much of a difference

At the very least rent it and see what you think. On average I probably only buy 1 fighting game per year and this year SFIV is definitely the one to buy. I will be getting it tomorrow, woo-hoo!

*EDIT*

I bought the game yesterday and it is absolutely amazing. For those of you who are SF fans this will feel like playing the original SFII with the difference of a couple of very cool additions to the combat (Focus attacks and Ultra moves) as well as the gorgeous new graphics. There is full trophy support and TONS of cool things to unlock in-game such as cool custom titles for online play. Speaking of which, online has ZERO lag, the first fighting game I have played to be able to boast that. It is simply put an incredible experience with games easy to find, mic support, ranked and unranked games, battle points and lots of other cool touches.

If you are an SF fan then you probably already have this reserved. If your fighting game fan and you were sitting on the fence then trust me, you want to buy this game. If you are NOT a big fighting game fan but play them on ocassion then this is definitely worth checking out.

Here is the IGN review, it got a 9.3/10

I'd love to have a go at you, but fair warning I suck. But today I learnt how to consitently do some moves, aswell as a basic strategy or two.

EDIT

lol, it could be that we battle eahcother and you find that I suck too! Seriously though, I am rusty

As for maining Ken has been my cat since the original SF2. But I also like Sagat, Ryu and Balrog. I am always experimenting with other characters though and the new fighters in SFIV are really cool, especially Crimson Viper.

I'm having a hard time even considering purchasing this game. Just not that into fighters I guess. I don't deny it looks great or that I enjoy fighters, but I just can't justify dropping $60 when I'm pretty sure I won't get that much out of it. For all you hardcore fighter fanatics I'm sure it'll be great, but I'm going to give it a rent before anything else.2009-02-13 12:02:00

Yeah man, at the very least rent it. I am not the biggest fighting game fan in the world but I buy at least 1 fighter per year and I can honestly say this is the best an and most addictive fighter I have played since Alpha 3 on PS1. Even if there was no online it would still be worth the purchase for the robust single player experience, the game is that good.

I'll take you at your word and give it a look at the very least. Have a friend who's a huge Street Fighter fan so I may talk him into shelling out the cash for it; he's pretty stoked to give the Dan character a run...

No problem man. How did you unlock everyone so quick? Even on the easiest difficulty Seth is giving me some real problems lol. Any tips on how to counter his amazingly cheap moves?

Egh, the best way really is just to pressure the hell out of him into a corner. Never give him time or space to do anything. Just quick combos that end in confirmed specials.

Can't wait to unlock akuma

Just unlocked him, I forgot how powerful this guy is lol. But Gouken is the character I am most looking forward to unlocking. Did any of you used to read EGM magazine back in the day? Many years ago - before gaming mags pretty much became obsolete - this was the gamers bible. On April Fool's of 1992 EGM played a trick on it's readers by showing (fake) pictures of a mysterious secret character named Sheng Long and for the next month everyone was trying frantically to unlock him lol.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/82/ShengLongEGMScan.jpg

Capcom created the character of Gouken based on that April Fools joke so long ago and from what I have heard he may be the strongest character in the game. Man I am loving SFIV!

LOL no. As a Gief player, he's not "broken." SFIV is easily one of the more balanced fighters out there.

Alpha 3 was my favorite SF until I played this. I am now comfortable saying this is the best fighter I have ever played. I am still amazed that I can go online and fight someone with a 2 bar connection and still have ZERO lag! It's always like "OK, one more battle before bed" and then it ends up being 20 battles lol. And how can you not like any of the characters available!? Who did you use in Alpha 3? From the new group of fighters I think Crimson Viper is the best.

And yeah, Zangief is definitely NOT broken. I am not a Zangief player but I have never enjoyed using him as much as I have in this installment of the series. There is definitely a great balance to ALL the characters and no one should have a problem finding their favorite.

Well to be honest, if your into fighting games, chances are you'll like SFIV because it's easy to pick up and the characters are cool and taken by others well. You may want to try fighting games though first if you haven't played a single one.

Just my opinion.

Actually, I did stop, but it was still fun with me and my brother having "Ken vs. Abel" fighting extravaganza. I did okay with a new character I never used before and I like him. BTW, his Ultra is beastly. It does about 1/3 or 1/2 health. INSANE.

I tried to do the Arcade Mode, but I got owned...on "Easy"! Zangeif is just scary good.

*EDIT*

Gametrailers review is in, it got a 9.2:

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/45571.html

It's like the reviewer said, if you lose in Street Fighter it's because the other player was better then you, at least for that match. If you win then you know you have earned it. As far as I am concerned this is the only fighting game franchise where winning is based 100% on skill alone. There is no button mashing in this beast lol.

Yeah I put KZ2 on hold, probably get it a couple of months down the line. I love shooters but I have played so many of them so games like LBP and SFIV are such a welcome break.

You definitely need not have played Street Fighter before to enjoy it. It's easy to pick up but can take a lifetime to truly master. I used to be a Tekken fan but I loved Street Fighter first and it has always been the original, hardcore fighting franchise (and this is the best SF ever as far as I am concerned).

Give it some thought but I can tell you right now that you can't go wrong with this purchase

Ah well.

It's going to be the best fighter of the year I'm fairly sure and it is really fun and addicting. Me and my brother played for hours yesterday playing around 100 matches. It's good times.

I'm starting to get better at the game. I beat the Arcade with Abel and can now almost consistantly do my Ultra after launching them in the air. Oh and I found out that masking tape wrapped around the thumb helps out with the pain lol. I think I am going to try band-aids though.

I personally have had no problems vs Gief. Keep your distance and try to counter vs attacking him. Depending on the skill of the player a full on assault is also an option.

I've learned that Gief is Abel's worst match-up so I'm guessing I am going to play you over and over to get better at that match-up. Speaking of which, delete somebody you don't care about from your friend's list so you can add me lol.

I have to say I am starting to love Blanka. I have had the most problems fighting skilled Blanka players and now I see why. The monster is a MONSTER when used properly lol. His ultra does mega amounts of damage. I won tons of ranked matches last night using him.

I have still not seen you online Voltiare. Are you honing your skills offline first lol? I had a great 90 minute session with xbriandeadx yesterday, we had a blast.

GG, Voltiare. You're not bad with Abel and I was pretty surprised you pulled off the elbow to ultra a couple of times. I was still miffed about the Seth match because of the freaking lagtastic action going on, lol.

So how do you like my Gief and Rose? =P

I wish this game had kings court like SF II HD. So much interest in this game yet only one on one. I'd love a game. Add me PSN: Gunstar_Legends. Also don't hate me for using ryu (although I play a mean C.Viper).

Nice session Voltiare, I just wish people would use other characters when we are playing unranked matches where nothing is at stake. So do you think I am alright at this game lol? Btw, I have to give you props on timing your supers/ultras, your very good at that. The one when you jumped over Rufus and countered with your ultra was hilarious, the guys eyes **** near popped out. You have to admit that last match was cool with me activating my ultra a split second after you did yours and countering it to win. Goodtimes

Not sure who you are talking too since we have not played eachother but I have had my data installed since day 1 lol. But yeah, it definitely speeds things up and is worth doing provided you have enough memory.

Goodtimes When I play a fighting game, I usually stick with a character. In Smash, it was Link and then later Snake when Brawl came out. I dunno. Just usually how I roll.

Yeah, I think you have to have good timing with the Ultra to play as Abel since it does a crap load of damage. It killed Rufus when he was at like half life lol.

The last match was crazy. I was like "WHAT.". Did you actually perform the motions in that split second? Or can you do the motions for moves when time stays still for a second after a person inputs an ultra or super?

BTW, what do you do against characters that have moves that go across the screen (E. Honda, Blanka) and flurry moves (Chun Li, E. Honda). I just couldn't think of a way to counter it besides jump up and down like an idiot. Also, wake-up Shoruken is so annoying. Can you just not cross-up Ken, Akuma, and Ryu after you knock them down?

I never actually fought Rose before (as I have only unlocked Fei Long), but she is good. She has looong poke attacks with amazing priority. You were just kicking through special moves like nothing.

Gief is just Gief. Insanely quick and long distance throws (for a throw, it's long). Green hand>throw is nuts. Ultra is unblockable? Best defense in the game. Combine all that with your annoying good spacing (You and OCK), it leaves only destruction.

As long as you're in my short range, you're f-ed when Gief's Ultra comes out. Nothing you can really do but jump.

How do you do this?

Go to options and then system settings. Install should be there.

Pinkcars - Good session earlier today. If your only going to use Ryu then you definitely need to work on technique and master him. It sucks that our game was lagging though. Are you using a wireless connection? That is the only reason I can think of.

JackBurton - Great session man! From the four people I have fought on these forums you have given me the best challenge. You are just like me in that you mix it up with different characters and have skill no matter who you use, I thought I was the only one lol. I look forward to our next session

Guys you have to work on Technique more then anything. The reason Capcom added that scorecard at the end of each battle is to show you how skilled you are and how effectively you used the given criteria. When it comes to Attack I ALWAYS get A. Defense is always a mix of A, B, or C (although I got D once in my hundreds of battles lol) and my Technique is A 50% of the time and C 50% of the time, rarely B. I have had a few triple A battles but the most imporatant thing is that I always have an ABC combination or better. These rating are important because they show you what needs to be improved upon. If your getting E's and D's then you need to step your game up lol.

So who's next? (btw, I enjoy playing with all of you guys no matter what the skill level. It is only a videogame after all)

****. I had the opportunity to get the game this morning. But I didn't. Now I feel very sad. I'm waiting for the special edition, you see...

I can't wait to play Zangief in this game. I've always liked the character, but have always been disappointed with how weak or difficult (i.e., not fun) to play he was in the older games.

Oh yeah, great session! This game is a blast!

- I'm an old school SFII Turbo fan. I remember old moves, but lots of things have been added since then (super, ultra, ex, revenge, etc.). And I still need to learn the ultra of every characters...

- Considering the distance between us, I was surprised to see that there was almost no lag ...

- And random character selection rules! I think the game gets boring pretty fast if every battle feels the same.

Looking forward to our next fight!

The last match was crazy. I was like "WHAT.". Did you actually perform the motions in that split second? Or can you do the motions for moves when time stays still for a second after a person inputs an ultra or super?

When someone activates their super/ultra you have a split second to input the motion of your own and possibly counter. However, you need to learn which will counter which. For example, if I would have been using C.Viper and did the same thing then your ultra would have connected and I would have been toast lol. So it depends on he character and learning what counters what.

Blanka etc moves can be countered with fireballs, dragon punches and lots of other special moves. I also believe you can stop the motion with a jab.

Flurry moves can be stopped in many different ways but if you are too close then your only option is to block until out of range and then counter.

I can't wait to play Zangief in this game. I've always liked the character, but have always been disappointed with how weak or difficult (i.e., not fun) to play he was in the older games.

Yeah he is really strong in this installment and I enjoy using him from time to time. If you pick up the game be sure to add me.

Me too, I played the hell out of that game on my SNES lol.

Yeah we only had a one bar connection and other then a few hiccups here and there everything ran smoothly.

And random character selection rules! I think the game gets boring pretty fast if every battle feels the same.

Couldn't agree more

I look forward to our next battle!

Word to the wise: do NOT battle Japanese players unless you want your *** handed to you lol. I thought I had skill but these guys have super-human reflexes. The game was released a week earlier in Japan so when I first went online their were pretty much only Japanese players to battle. Those first couple of days I got destroyed. Now it's at the point where I can always win 1 round and come very close to beating them in the final round but I get anxious with launching my ultra which they block and counter with their own. I played this one guy who was a master with Sakura. The guy was doing air combos I never even knew existed, they went on forever lol. I was playing ranked games too so after bringing my Battle Points up to over 1700 I finished at around 1400. BUT it is definitely a good way to improve your game, these guys will push you.

Hmmm... I'll have to reconsider skipping over this game for the time being. Perhaps I could ignore Killzone 2, but there seem to be a tonne of good games coming out right now. I'm looking forward to Fire Emblem DS and Patapon 2 as well, and the new Crystal Chronicals for DS and Wii...

A problem though is that the game has come out for $120 Aus, basically the highest they can charge for a new game. And that's not the special version, just the usual one.

Anyway, I use to love a good SF2. I was not the top by any means, but my favourite version would have to be X-men vs Street Fighter. My Dhalsim / Storm combo could beat just about anyone...

Speaking of Dhalsim, no one has mentioned him. What's up with that? Don't tell me I'm going to have to get the game and show you all how powerful he is.

I also use to enjoy Ryu and Blanka as well. It sure seems like they have some good variety with the fighters list this time around.

Dhalsim won the national Japanese tournament. So yeah, he's pretty good if you know how to use him.

On an update: There are too many Kens. I fought about 5 in the span of an hour. One was good, two were about my skill, and two were worse. I managed to make those two quit as I would lure Shorukens and either grab or elbow>ultra them. It was pretty fun.

Also I had some guy PM me because he thought I was spamming Abel's Change of Direction combo.

Well, I did get the game and have so far enjoyed it quite a bit. I think I've spent 4 hours now on this first day that I have had it.

The character I'm finding easiest to use is Ryu. I prefer Ryu over Ken as Ryu is more a big slow hitter versus Ken's faster high combo lighter hits.

Dhalsim is a bit tricky to use. The top arcade boss's arm stretch attack actually reaches further than Dhalsim, which makes him a pain to beat with that character. He's not the easiest of bosses anyway, but the main strength of Dhalsim (powerful long range attacks) is countered by the fact that he is out-reached.

I tried a bit with Blanka. I'm always better at the circular motion type super moves (like the Hydokken) as opposed to the back-forth ones (like the Sonic Boom) so I'm a bit limited with him. If I can get more use to his roll attack it would be good, or else I'll just be outranged all day.

I've unlocked Sakura and tried a few online matches. I lost 3 out of 3, but that's okay. I can see the weaknesses of my opponents, but I just can't quite pull off the moves or combos I want every time. I faced Sagat twice, and the other time was Ryu. I just stayed with Ryu for those matches.

The character I am most interested in learning of the new ones would be Rufus. I haven't spent a great deal of time with him, but he seems to be a close range fighter that uses circle power moves as opposed to back and forth ones. Most of the close combat types (Blanka, Vega, Balrog) all use back forth type moves, so it's good they finally have one that's not like that.

I'm just plain rusty at the moment though. The best I have beaten the arcade mode on is "Very Easy". It's starting to come back, but I'm still having trouble learning and executing the Ultra moves. I can see Focus attacks being really handy as well, but it's going to take some time to learn too. I'd also like to work on my general throw skills as well, and I need to defend a lot more if I'm going to do better at harder difficulties and online matches.

But as I said at the start, I'm really enjoying the game so far. I'm appreciating the amount of depth, strategy and balance it all brings, it's just going to take a while to learn and get use to it all.

By the way, I use an arcade stick. I bought a 3rd party one around launch time for Virtua Fighter 5. I don't understand what all the "thumb soreness" you all complain about is.

VERY useful technique. Try to learn the in's and out's of it ASAP.

Great session today Voltaire, your game has improved and we had a couple of really good matches. You are very good at defending and your EX throw used when I was getting up was really starting to irritate me (because you used it so effectively lol). As always, your timing with supers/ultras was fantastic. There was one where you activaved your Super mid-combo and decimated me in the corner lol.

Get it anyway... that's what I did. I'm like 70% done with my first level, then SFIV came out and level creating has been put on hold.

In other news, I had a winning streak of 19 the other day and my ratio is at 82%, pretty much has been since I started playing. I also have 1900-ish BP's, I think that's fairly good.

Also, go to Challenge mode to learn the character's combos. Some of them are reaaaallly hard.

And yeah, I've learned that his Tornado Throw is really important to Abel's game. EX Throw on wake-up is great for massive damage lol. It still doesn't beat Dragon Punches though T_T.

You are really good in general, but you have the amazing ability to turtle when I am close to winning the match and then killing me. I was robbed of like 3-4 matches because of that.

Never underestimate the crouching jab

Good session today aer0, your pretty good with Cammy but I told you long before we played eachother: if you step to me with Akuma you are going to get dropped lol. We had a couple of very close matches but I have to point out I use over half the fighters in the game rather then sticking to my favorites (Blanka, Ken, Sagat) and that actually makes it harder for you guys to defeat me cause you constantly have to adapt to a different character. You guys should really try practicing with at least 2 other characters to keep things fresh, just a thought

'Twas cool, just a bit frustrating. Losing so much. >_< But now I see where the frustration is actually coming from.

I was reading around, and Cammy got a nerf(got toned down) from previous games. Makes sense. I was wondering why her Hooligan Throw wasn't grabbing your crouching Blanka. Turns out her Hooligan throw doesn't grab onto crouching opponents anymore...which is totally lame.

And I agree on practicing with more than one character. I just like to learn one, then move to another. I usually end up playing every character in fighting games. I remember back on Naruto:GNT4 and right now on FF: Dissidia. I use half the roster on that one. Fun stuff...never gets boring that way.

Just got this myself.

Im a huge 2D fighter fan.... GG is my favorite, and braggy as it may sound I'll utterly annihilate most opponents in it.... so this type of thing definitely appeals to me. I play these absolutely to death.

SF isnt as awesome as GG to me, but it's still pretty great.... alot of characters I've been familiar with for years.

I havent tried the online part yet. I've had only bad experiences with online fighters in the past, so Im a bit wary about that. Just the slightest change in timing will irritate the heck outta me. Im used to having to actually go find opponents physically. But I'll give it a shot nonetheless.

It's a bit difficult to get used to. Based on my general personality, and overall style in gaming, my fighting is mainly based on my speed & reflexes (Im VERY fast), and prediction. Im bad at learning opponent patterns, so I use that to make up for it. Im also a bit inaccurate and every now and then will do something screwy on accident. And Im bad with "tactics". This probably comes from me playing too many shmups, but my usual strategy is very simple: rush at the opponent. When Im done rushing, well, I'll rush some more. Sort of a berserker style, basically. It's not as easy to play aggressively in this as in GG, or even Brawl, so that's slightly obnoxious. Though the more Im playing it, Im finding how to be aggressive ANYWAY, which is working out well.

But I dont intend on jumping online AT ALL until I feel I've reached a certain level.

I intend on learning the entire cast to some degree (which is what I do in every fighter; I have ALOT of free time on my hands, haha), but there are some in this that'll likely drive me crazy; Zangief, for example. Holy heck, am I ever BAD at doing circle commands. Always was, always will be. Doesnt help that I havent had to do that type of command for a long time (GG doesnt do that one, and neither does most other 2D types I play).

So far I'm playing Arcade mode. Im at the base difficulty, whatever that is, the default one, currently, though I'll likely up that pretty soon. Seth drove me crazy for a bit, but when I finally DID take him down, I completely trashed him (which was satisfying.... holy CRAP is he IRRITATING). I hate fighting game bosses.... I mean, good grief. The ANNOYING.

Gee, I must be bored as heck to be ranting about this randomly here, haha.

Anyway, it'd be nice to get some fights in later against some of you. Particularly as Im thinking that anyone from here would be likely to be someone mature and fun to play with, as opposed to some people I've met while playing these (the ones that swear alot, or trash talk, or whip their controlers at the table if they lose). Being that this community is just so darned great

.....and did I mention Seth being annoying? 'Cause he is.

Ok, I'll stop rambling aimlessly now..... This is what happens when it's as late as it is but I still have too much energy.

I'm more of a GG person, too. Even if I'm not that amazing at it. Anyway, the online is pretty darn good. I had virtually no lag against OCK... I'm in Puerto Rico (the Caribbean) and he's in Japan. The other side of the world. Literally. Who would've thought? Basically, any opponent with 2 out of 5 bars or more (lag-wise) gives you a smooth match. And no, I'm not kidding.

I'll play with you sometime. I can't say I'll give you much of a challenge, because the only character I picked up in the whole SF series was Makoto, and well...she isn't in this one. d: I'm just experimenting and TRYING to land 2-in-1's, or really small combos. In short, I'm just..."average". Or lower. Haha.

lol, I guess you did not read my previous posts. The game has virtually ZERO lag. When I battle Voltiare we have a 1 bar connection and other then a 2 second hiccup every 10 matches or so the game runs flawlessly.

.....and did I mention Seth being annoying? 'Cause he is.

He is pretty annoying but I found you can spam certain moves such as Zangief's Lariet or Guile's Flash Kick and they will connect 90% of the time. Just back him into a corner and don't stop attacking.

Anyway, it'd be nice to get some fights in later against some of you.

Once you feel you have had enough practice feel free to add me on PSN and we can get a few battles in. Not to brag but I think so far I wear the crown on these forums so let's see if you can take it

Although I agree there are a lot of Ken players it should not bother anyone lol. If you have skills then beat the crap out of all those Ken's and don't worry about it. A lot of people new to the series will gravitate towards a character like Ken because he is easy to use and his moves are flashy. Then there is the other group of people (such as myself) who have been maining Ken since the original SF2.

Personally I have fought more Ryu's online then Ken's and Akuma is ever popular.

Bottom line? Everyone needs to use whoever they feel they are good with and prove their skills in combat.

Where did you see custom soundtracks? I did not even know about that lol.

It's not in any option menus or anything. You just press the PS button to go to the XMB, then go to music and play what you want I was wondering if they had it, so tried it out and it worked An update a while ago added this feature, but this may actually be the first to not have it in a game menu. Just use it from the XMB. I wish all games did this. It then obviously turns off the game music, but keeps sound effects Though i love most of the soundtracks in the game (particularly in the volcanic level) so I dunno if I'll use it a lot. (though i don't like the intro movies first song...)

Another random note - i can't play this again properly for 2 weeks now I have SSIITHDR for the PC and got my PS3 controller working on it, but it's a buggy version and obviously just not the same I miss it already! Is there a similar street fighter on PS2?
Also, i only found out L2 and R2 (with type B setting controls) do Light, Medium and Hard attacks in one go. That would of helped me so much more for my ultras >.> I only landed 2 or 3 on the weekend.

Actually a fair few already do
I think SSHD was the first, and quite a few have followed along. Burnout Paradise does too. It's slowly getting into more games Most have it in the game menu though, and won't allow it through the xmb.

Also, i only have my PS2 in uni and i just found out my mate in the house has Hyper Street Fighter II Anniversary Edition So i can still sorta practice away from PS3

Well, I had a few rounds with Ock last night. My apologies for it seeming so short, but it was half an hour we went for, beleive it or not. It was 11pm my timezone when we stopped, which for the moment is quite late for me. We shall have to try it again another time a bit earlier so we can go for longer.

I only managed to win one or 2 rounds (not matches) from OCK though. He's just so solid. Especially when he counters my ultras with his own ultras.

I had a bit of a muck about with Sakura before those matches though. I might be able to get use to her. I especially like the chargable regular Hadduken, it leads to some good strategy possibilities.

If so, you should go to the challenge mode and then learn a combo into the ultra. I think every character has one and it will win you a lot of rounds when you really need it.

Anyway, great matches, OCK. We had some dumb mirror matches (Fuerte vs. Fuerte was my favorite) and some really tight games. I was finally abel (Heh heh heh) to beat your Blanka, which is a huge achievement for me. He is so annoying with his cross-up ball.

Also, I found out that Dhalsim is fun to play with.

Great session man, the best I have had with anybody since I got the game. I don't like to lose (who does) but I always appreciate a skilled opponent. Those throws were really getting on my nerves but hey, everything is allowed and your timing is impeccable. Any tips on how to counter them? lol

GG yesterday Elbee. Too bad we had a bit of lag although the system reset seemed to help a bit. I look forward to our next session.

I think the cancel you are refering to is the Focus cancel. You have to chain the focus attack into whatever combo is asked of you and it will perfrom a cancel into a focus attack. I hope that helps.

Those throws were really getting on my nerves but hey, everything is allowed and your timing is impeccable. Any tips on how to counter them? lolWell, the Tornado Throw is throw immune. If you try to grab me, you will get beat by my Tornado Throw every time. I've even beat out Geif's Ultra with it. My EX-Tornado Throw is hit immune. If you try to punch me, you will get beat out.

So the best option is probably to jump or back up if I have meter. If I don't, try to jab out of it. You can also Shoryuken. It beats both versions of the throw, but I've played a TON of Kens so I am pretty used to it. I mean, if you miss a Shoryuken, you are going to eat a Tornado Throw or an Ultra.

YES. Finally, another Dhalsim player. Honestly getting tired with Sakura/Ryu/Ken/Akuma playing people, (just getting tired to see them everyday, every same combo..) I'm having fun with Dhalsim myself, but very far from mastering him. I've found a neat-o combo with him though,

Ultra -> teleport behind opponent -> grab -> epic win!

EDIT: Btw, if anyone's up for some matches add me OssumPossum

It was the first time I played him in SF4 and he has some good moves and funny tactics. When I was playing with him, all I could think is "Nyah nyah! You can't catch me!" as I set up a Yoga Fire + j.HP wall of defense.

I'm getting pretty familiar with Cammy on SFII now, so i can't wait till i get back on IV to try her out properly Is she considered a pretty good character?

EDIT: Random thought... would it be worth it at all in investing in SSIITHDR? I clearly enjoy the original, and i'd love to play it with updated graphics. Plus when i go home i won't be able to go on SFII as it's my mates. But i dunno if IV will just steal all the time and it would be a pointless buy I wish i bought it earlier!

If you're a purist, then yes HDR is a good buy. It's pretty much the definitive version of SFII.

But... IV is the way to go as of now.

Well, HD Remix is pretty much the classic SFII but...better. SFIV is a whole other game. Yes, characters have the same moves, but they're different this time around. For example, Cammy's Hooligan Throw no longer throws crouching opponents. Something to consider if you're gonna main Cammy (like me!). In short, it's up to you, but I would rather just get SFIV.

To answer your question: no. Keep in mind the speed of SFIV is not as fast as HD remix and some of those dash techniques are not even possible with this game.

I have not encountered anyone that skilled with Ryu so don't worry, you have a fighting chance. In general, Japanese players are the most skilled so stick to fighting Europeans and North Americans and you should do OK

Long story short I am leaving Japan at the end of the month so I traded it in before the value become 0 YEN. I got Resident Evil 5 and will trade that in before I leave too (no renting in Japan, it sucks). Once I am settled in my new home I will probably pick it up again.

I retire with my crown intact and fully expect that the next time we play you will kick the crap out of me Where are you going to? And yes, pick it up quick.

I hope so.

I'm still waiting for my FightStick. -_-So? You are too good for the controller?

I'm still using mine, but I am also waiting for my Hori Fight Stick 3. It is going to take me a while to get used to it, I'm sure, but I'm guessing it will be worth it in the end.

EDIT: Just got it and man is it different. I'm not terrible at the game. I have around 2500 BP, but I cannot beat anyone with the stick lol. I'm fine with this, but I'm guessing it is going to take weeks to get used to stick controls.

Exactly.

No, really, the controller sucks. Even the PS3 one is pretty bad as each direction on the d-pad is a button itself, not one whole cross like on the SNES. I wanna get more into the competitive scene with SFIV, and I just can't do that with a controller.

Nice, which one did you get? I would love the Mad Catz Tournament edition one... but... price >.>

Do they really make all the difference when playing?

Yes, they do make a difference. I got the MadCatz one (forgot the exact name... $70 or so). Just so happens about 80% of them come with defects. Even if you change it back at your local GameStop or wherever, you'll most likely get another broken one (maybe even in worse condition). So, the solution? Mailed it to MC; they paid for shipping and everything. It's already there. Just gotta wait for them to do whatever it is they're gonna do and ship it back.

Really?? I thought they were pretty reliable :S That's pretty bad.
I've been looking around, but getting a fight stick right now costs an arm and a leg Even the Hori stick is about ?100 on ebay. Ach.

Well i bought SFIV without ever playing a Street Fighter game and i'm addicted. The only other fighting games i've ever played are Tekken 2 (was addicted when young. Not good though), Tekken 5 DR (played a bit but wasnt much in the PS3 version) and a few goes on SC. But i am ADDICTED to this game. I love it
Dunno if that means you will ofcourse, but it's very deep and takes alot of time to master. And that's what i love about it. I am far from good still.

I think he's saying that he doesn't want to buy another FPS (as there are tons tbf) and wants to go with something new.

Ah, sorry, misinterpreted your post.

Street Fighter IV is a must-have for me (if you don't have a fighting game yet..)
The graphics really brought me in and the gameplay is amazing. It's pretty deep, but the part I like about is that you mostly have to make your own combos, as it doesn't spoonfeed you and make you omgl33t.

If you haven't had a fighting game (or you're thirsting for one) get Street Fighter IV.

Anyone that wants to brawl with good ol' Abel, let me know and add me as a friend. PSN: Voltiare.

150 points? I still am stuck on 0. Beleive me, there are worse players than us out there.

I do use a stick myself. It's the "Fighting Stick 3" by Hori of Japan. Yeah, I haven't heard of them either, but the stick is alright. 8 main face buttons, a turbo function (which I never use)... It's not wireless though and there are no lights indicating it's player number status though. I bought it for Virtua Fighter 5 around the launch time of the PS3. It still works fine. It's near impossible to get a stick now though as everyone wants one for SFIV.

In my opinion Virtua Fighter 5 is still the best fighting game on the PS3, ahead of SFIV. I just really loved the depth they put into the wildly different fighting styles. But back to SFIV...

It sounds like ryryryan and I need a face off some time. The battle of the not so experts!

Recently I've been losing a lot too. Seems like everyone else is getting better while I'm stuck at the same level. I went from 2800 BPs to 2200 and from 85% win ratio to 79%.

Haha i'd love to! But it will have to be at easter now cause i'm not home till 10 Feel free to add me if you want - PSN is same as username. Though i don't tend to have great signal in matches cause i play wireless... and you're on the opposite side of the world D: Though we can give it a go anyway Maybe one day i'll hook it up wired (have to move TV and PS3 downstairs) to get great online play.

I also played akuma for the first time online. He is IMPOSSIBLE to beat. Shoto players are just so annoying for me - a Cammy player. The Spinning Back Fist is useful against them but other than that i have great trouble. Only the noob Kens don't bother me - though one even cheaply beat me and i was furious! for some reason i just couldn't do the spinning back fist. Think it was a bit laggy >.> it's an easy move to pull off.

Since I finally got my parts for my PS3 TE stick, I might as well take pics of all of them together.

http://www.daviddino.com/dssticks1.jpg

Clockwise from the top left...

(PS3) Hori HRAP3 Amazon SE - Full Seimitsu parts
(360) Madcatz Fightstick TE - Seimitsu stick/Vermillion Seimitsu buttons/Black Sanwa buttons
(PS3) Madcatz Fightstick SE - Full Sanwa parts
(PS3) Madcatz Fightstick TE - Full Seimitsu parts

None of them are stock and I'm just waiting on the wifey to do her photoshop magic for some custom art on all the Madcatz sticks.

http://www.daviddino.com/dssticks2.jpg

The beasty sticks.

http://www.daviddino.com/dssticks3.jpg

Now just the TE sticks. I'll probably get another HRAP for my 360 to accompany my 360 TE.

Eh, it all depends on my mood. I'm more of a bat person than anything else since it's closer to the old American cabinets, but I can switch back and forth between the two.
