Why I yay & heart every level I play.

Archive: 13 posts

Hello wonderful people!

I have been thinking allot about negativity in LBP2 lately. Recently I have started seeing lots of levels have ALL of their reviews booed for absolutely no reason, and of course there has been the steady stream of haters and trolls in LBP (as well with every other game). I also have seen a large amount of people saying they're leaving the game "because the community sucks" or "because they do not get enough recognition in their levels". With LBP being my hands down favourite game it always sucks to see these kinds of things! Now i know that everyone has probably noticed at least one of these things that I mentioned. Personally I don't take it upon myself to try and change the attitude of any of these players, because there are just way to many of them. But what i do try to do is be as positive as I can in game and around the forums!

For starters, when I play a level in LBP I always make an effort to yay and heart the level. Some of you might think I'm insane but hear me out! When you yay or heart somebodies level on LBP it really doesn't affect you at all, basically all it does is show the creator that you enjoyed his or her level! Now some of you might think that these things go unnoticed but I can tell you from experience that they certainly don't! When I first started LBP and had published my first creation, I would be so insanely happy when anyone yayed or hearted my level! Now if I had published my level and gotten 25 plays and no positive feedback that would be kind of a buzz kill wouldn't it? Imagine working 5 hours on a level and having nobody yay it, that wouldn't really motivate you to make more would it? So basically what I'm saying is: Yaying or hearting someones level doesn't inconvenience you at all and can mean the world to the creator of the level!

Also I always try to give positive feedback to other players. If I play a level that really amazes me I will leave a nice review or comment about the level on what I like. If I play a level that I completely hate I don't leave a nasty comment about all the things the player did wrong because chances are that player is probably really proud with their creation and I don't want to rain on their parade. But that being said if a player is looking for feedback on their level I will point out anything that I didn't like.

These are just my thoughts and I certainly don't mean to preach to anyone. The only point to this thread is to make some people think about something

Hello wonderful people!

I have been thinking allot about negativity in LBP2 lately. Recently I have started seeing lots of levels have ALL of their reviews booed for absolutely no reason,

People review a level and then boo the other reviews so they can get the top review. It doesn't mean they dislike the level or the reviews....if anything, they think the level is cool and want to have the top review on it (and therefore be "cool" as well. So if you see a level with tons of booed reviews, it's a good thing).

Also, I'm pretty much the same with yaying and hearting ALMOST every level I play. The only times I don't yay/heart a level is...
1. if the creator is extremely overrated (several thousand players for a level that maybe took 5 minutes to make)
2. if it's copied....I absolutely try to avoid those levels...
3. if the creator is a h4h-er
4. if the scoreboard has a level link that forcibly takes me to a completely unrelated level or a hub....there are several occasions when I hearted a level and removed my heart afterwards because the creator linked me to a level after the scoreboard...

Lots of fair points there, Dolphin

I used to reviews lots, if not all the levels I played, but sometimes, I put more effort in to the review than they did the level, and it started to become a little pointless

Nice way of looking on the bright side though

Hello wonderful people!
Well hello to you dolphins!

When you yay or heart somebodies level on LBP it really doesn't affect you at all,
first, ahem, somebody's. next. It does affect you. I use giving hearts as a way to bookmark levels that I may want to return to someday. I'm not "bookmarking" a level unless it truly stands out.

Imagine working 5 hours on a level and having nobody yay it,
5 hours? I've spent more time than that just planning one out on paper! I can tell the difference between a 5 hour level and one that someone actually spent some time on.

I concur and do the same thing. If I found the level didn't meet my standards, meaning it was awful, then I won't leave anything. No "yay" or anything. Just walk away shaking my head. If the level wasn't all that bad and it either made me smile or a couple of parts were fun or if I can at least tell that the creator actually put some effort into it, then yeah, I'll slap a "yay" on it and maybe even leave some nice words. If it made my eyes pop out of my head and made me drool all over the floor then that sucker gets a heart for sure.

Same here. I only use hearts as a bookmark to those levels that I loved a lot and want to replay them someday, and since i'm a bit nitpicky and often only enjoy fairly professional levels, Means I only heart very few levels.*mew

Now a lot of levels that I thought were only "OKish" I'll give a yay regardless. And any level i dislike I'll just leave.

So yeah I'm pretty straight forward with how I handle that kind of stuff. But I do think on future LBP games I'd prefer hearts to be renamed "Bookmark" personally.

Great topic. I have to say that I do see the value in spreading the love and positive vibe. I used to use the hearts as a bookmark system myself, but I don’t anymore. Once my kids started using my account to play LBP, they totally jacked that up. Nowadays, I yea almost everything, because I’m just happy to see people still creating in LBP. I will also sometimes heart some very suspect levels just because I can tell they tried hard for their corresponding age or current skill level. Inside my own heart, I have this na?ve idea that my pixel heart might possibly make the difference and keep someone creating and possibly become great at it!

Another thing I’ve been doing lately, is to try and respond to all the requests to “play my level” or “give me feedback” on my profile or picked level. Even though this phishing technique can be slightly suspect, I’ve found that doing this has generally brought so much joy to them, that it brings joy to me too. Of course I appreciate the requests that are more sincere sounding, but most of us can remember the days we could never get anyone to play our levels… I also have been trying to take more time to thank any player who leaves me any type of comment or review on one of my levels. What I’ve found that is even the people who left nasty reviews on a level, were generally happy that I responded to them. Once again, I’m probably being na?ve that these actions will make a better community, but the odds are in my favor that I’ll at least be able to make at one positive impact and that’s good enough for me.

PS – 5 hours create time is hilarious. It takes me that long to open my pop-it sometimes!

Ok just to clear something up! When I used the time "5 hours" I meant this in the context of a new player who was just starting the game and messing around in create mode. Believe me I spend MUCH more than 5 hours creating levels and I am sure that the majority of people do

Hearting levels to bookmark them is a nice idea. Personally I only play levels once UNLESS I find them extremely awesome and in which case I will normally remeber them if I ever want to play them again!

@Peoria: I agree with everything you have said. When I see someone that has created a level, I have the same na?ve idea that my "pixel heart" will make them happy and that it will make them feel like it was worth the time and effort they put into the level. Because I certainly know that before I had thousands of plays and hearts that just a couple plays and a few hearts really motivated me

Yeah, I can understand a lot of people want quality in every level they play. But that just doesn't happen because not everyone is a master of creating. I yay and often heart levels that have some sort of work put into them, be it amazing to the eyes, or something basic and straight to the point. As long as the level isn't a copied one that has been circulated thousands of times or is an empty level with, I'm not kidding I've seen this a lot, just a stairway made of pink floaty that is too tall to even climb the third or fourth step, I'll give the creator some constructive criticism, a yay and/or a heart. It's all about helping out the ones who just might make that diamond in the rough of a level.2014-04-18 23:05:00

When "famous" people heart or review a new creator's level, it really does mean a lot to them and inspires them to continue creating. I remember feeling so happy when some of my favorite creators hearted our level.2014-04-19 04:15:00

Am I the only one here who thinks that...

http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c48/metalgamer84/forum%20-%20fail%20sucks/illogical.jpg

Listen to me here.

The only reason why we like yays and hearts is because they are special. It means our level is a cut above the rest. What good is "this doesn't stand out at all"? Or at least, what good is it compared to "this level stood out to me as being especially good"? It don't have to explain that the latter is much better than the former, which is barely above an insult.

By yaying and hearting any level you play, without any sort of discretion or standards, you are inadvertently lumping all of them into the same category-the "this didn't stand out category". Suppose we all did what you were doing-then, a heart and a yay wouldn't mean anything at all. You may argue that it meant that we all thought each others' levels were great, but that is not the case. Really, how can something be great if it doesn't stand out? Every level gets a heart and a yay, none of them are better than any other, they are all equally mediocre.

I don't really care about hearts or yays in general, but I can still illustrate a point by using reviews, which are the only real things that stand out to me. Why? Well, simply because there are so few of them. Honestly, the review to play ratio on my levels is, to take a rough guess, about 1 to 25. Even more valuable to me are long reviews, reviews that are paragraphs rather than a sentence or two. Why? Well, simply because they are even less common. Their rarity shows that when I get one, it means someone must have liked my level a great deal.

But suppose everybody left long reviews on my levels. Initially, I'd be pleased, but after a while I wouldn't care at about them. Since everybody was giving levels long reviews, it would mean that my level didn't stand out. And that's pretty much it. I know what you're trying to do but honestly it's just so illogical. You have to hope that nobody follows your example to make yays and hearts matter even less, and on top of that hope that no grateful sack would go to your profile and then "Oh, he yays and hearts everything. Oh wow."

You are 100% correct kala! If everyone yayed and hearted every level they played then of course these things would start to lose their meaning. It's kind of like if it was christmas everyday. At first you would love it: no work, good food and lots of presents. But after a while you would just get sick of it and it would lose its meaning entirely! But for me the reason I yay and heart all of the levels I play is because so little players do that. For lots of players a yay or a heart is something that a creator needs to earn with an absolutely mind blowing level! For me a yay or a heart is just a nod of my head that they tried and had fun playing and creating in LBP! You see I am not trying to get everyone on LBP to start yaying and hearting every level they play, I am just simply sharing my thoughts about how I play the game! You can decide whether to agree or disagree with me 2014-04-19 05:53:00

TC, I think this is a good topic--albiet familiar one.

Personally, I don't heart or like every level I play, in fact, I don't heart many levels. Hearting a level means you want to follow general activity of the level and probably will want to play it again at some point. Why isn't there as much of this anymore? Well there just aren't that many good levels anymore(compared to the not so much).

In my honest opinion, I think liking and hearting everything does nothing for the community. "Like" by definition is to receive some form of pleasure from the experience or greater value in a particular element. Liking a level you do not really like is crippling a creator in the long run. Kind of like telling your little sister shes a good artist, when she can barely draw stick figures. When she grows up or see other great drawings, she is going to realize that you have been lieing. And if you continue to tell her that, you lose credibility, and she feels even worse about her abilities.

I give that soliloquy because I feel if a creator wants no feedback, they have the option to disable comments or even delete comments. As creators, we have to be mature enough to understand not everyone is going to like your level, and while I do agree some comments can be taken too far( an MM creator that deleted his own minigame a couple weeks ago because of it), praising every creator because they created as opposed to what they created, diminishes the whole idea of user created gaming and the purpose of the rating system.

If every player were to like and heart every single level they come across, what would be the point of having a rating system?

Some of the other guys said this, but it also takes away from the creators that work hard. For example, I remember when Nobody, the guy with like 50000 gillion hearts, hearted me. It felt special. It made me feel good because I knew he only hearted like 10 guys at the time. Knowing a lot of people liking your level and hearting it, is our goal as creators and gives us that sense of accomplishment when we finally publish. We respond to that negative feedback and try to come back and improve. Proposing methods like hearting everything, takes that feeling or goal away from us.

Parents should talk with their children and prepare them for the create-sharing world, as well as more mature creators should monitor their choice of words when critiquing levels, especially for newer publishers. Then, just maybe, we may see a more respectful community.
