DV's Level Contest #2 - Food for Thought

DVLC2: Food for Thought
(No logo I'm afraid. Sorry, I got lazy!)

Success! Let me start off by saying how great it was to have five unique and varied entries for DVLC1, so much so in fact that I was able to forgive the lack of sand-filled boots in ANY of the entries... *ahem* Oh yes, hello, my name is Dragonvarsity, and welcome to the second of my level contests for LBP2. I think this series of contests is off to a good start to be honest, and I'd like to thank everyone who gave it their support, whether by commenting, entering or what have you. Things might get messy for DVLC2 with the overlapping of LBPC12 and SFC1 (and any other contests that might pop up soon), but one of the points I've made with this series is to deliver numerous small-scale contests quickly and relatively consistently, so there's always one not toooo far off, and it (hopefully) doesn't generate the same level of intimidation that the site-official, crown-awarding contests can sometimes produce.

Some of these contests I'm hosting might just be more successful than others because of their better timing, but given that they aren't very big anyway, there just simply isn't as much for me to lose with them. Timing is good to consider, but since I know I don't have a whole lot to offer in terms of prizes anyway, I'm not going to worry about it too much.. Plus, trying to find a sweet spot where smaller scale contests manage to peacefully coexist with the larger ones instead of tip-toeing around them too much would be great. So then, with that all said, let's get to the actual contest itself:

http://sr.photos3.fotosearch.com/bthumb/IMZ/IMZ400/sps0465.jpg

Theme:

The theme for DVLC2, as the thread title suggests, is all about food. You want to make food come into play in some large way if you decide to enter. Now, a lot of people reading this might sigh at first. Understandably, we have enough food levels as it is already, but so many of them are just plain bad. Also, a lot of the game's food levels mainly focus on either burgers or candy, when there's so much else we eat in life. (yes, it's true!) Incorporate whatever food you want, and be creative too! There are so many possibilities with this theme beyond what you usually see on LBP. What I like about it is that it's broad and yet it could in fact be quite hard to pull off well.

So how could this all form into a well-crafted level then? Do you guys need some ideas to inspire you? Well, how about swinging off noodles of spaghetti, sliding down the tops of burritos, taking a dip in a sea of french onion soup, or bouncing off popping popcorn? (Not to say all levels entered have to take place in a world of oversized food, I'm just using those all as examples to paint a picture)

Prizes for winning:
1. $20.00 PSN code. (U.S. only, apologies to those outside my region)
2. A fancy, in-depth creator interview with pictures and level links.
3. Top spot in a level hub created to compile all contest entries.
4. ..The sense of accomplishment from having won?

Note: If someone who's won a DVLC wins another, then they will still be able to receive all of the above prizes aside from the creator interview.

So, as I said, the PSN card I have up as part of the prize is region-locked to my nation, the U.S., so it wouldn't work for someone outside the U.S. Nevertheless, if the winner is outside the U.S, then I'll still be happy to go out and buy the card and then send the winner said code. Maybe they have a friend or someone else they know who lives inside the U.S? Or perhaps a not-so-shady business dealer who can swap codes of their region? Just know that while I try to buy the PSN card for the winner right after the judging is over, they could still expire at some point if they aren't put onto a Playstation system. So be warned!

Everyone who enters in general will still get their entrees recorded and uploaded to my youtube channel, plus their levels will be showcased in the contest hub that I create. (Plus other good stuff like learning from your experiences and being a part of this all and blah blah blah.)

Rules for Entering:
Your level must be new, as in you cannot enter a previously published work. It must be created and submitted in LBP2 and contain "(DVLC2)" in the title, and it must be published within the entry window, which is between May 12th and 11:59 PM EST on Sunday, May 18th (the deadline for this contest). All entries submitted after the deadline will be disqualified.
The level must also include gameplay, meaning it can't be a movie. Cutscenes are allowed for it of course, but there should still be a fair amount of playable portions included.
I should be able to play through each level entry without needing a PS Move or PS Vita as a controller, as I own neither. To reiterate, every level entered must be playable using the PS3’s standard controller.
Only one level may be submitted per creator, and your level may only include one level slot. That means no use of level links to add additional thermo to your entry.
Once your level has been published, make sure to notify me through this thread on LBPCentral or the one on the Sackinima forums. Also, make sure to provide a link to your level's lbp.me page, just in case the search filters mess up when it’s time for me to judge everything.
You may republish your level at any point during the entry window (a.k.a. between May 12th and the deadline) but DO NOT republish after the deadline. Any level republished after this point will be disqualified, unless of course you need to fix a huge game-breaking bug or small details regarding the level title, description, or badge. If this is the case, make sure to tell me this by posting through the thread or sending me a PM, then wait for my approval before republishing. (Once judging is over and the winner's been announced, feel free to make any changes of course. You can even take "(DVLC2)" out of the level title.)
Please respect the creators you are competing with, and the decisions I make when judging everything. This is supposed to be a fun community event, and just know that I plan to do many more of these types of contests in the future.

While that should cover the basics, I imagine many other questions could potentially pop up from those interested in entering. Because of this, I have created the following: (with some parts borrowed from existing FAQs, heh..)

Q: Am I allowed to enter a previously published level?
A: No. As I said in the rules, all levels entered must be first published during the entry window.

Q: Can I enter a level I already have on my moon, but has yet to be published?
A: Yes. That’s definitely allowed.

Q: But couldn’t that give me an unfair advantage in the competition?
A: That’s one way of looking at it, but clearly you’d still need to put the effort in to make it look good. Besides, there’s no way I could figure out if you started making a level that fits the bill of the contest ages ago, and there’s really no point anyway.

Q: Are there certain DLC kits I’m not allowed to use when entering?
A: Nope, use whatever DLC kit you’d like when crafting your entry, so long as it doesn’t require that I use the Movinator, the Brain Crane, or the Vitanator, as I don't own a PS Move or PS Vita. Other tools from the 'PS Move'/'Cross-Controller' kits that don't require other controllers, (e.g. wormholes) are fine to use.

Q: Am I allowed to receive assistance from other creators for my entry?
A: Yes, and even if that wasn’t okay, there’s no way I could monitor your creating activity anyway. However, if you do decide to work with others in designing an entry, please note that the prize(s) will be awarded to only one person. Decide upon who will receive the prize(s) if your entry wins and tell me this user’s name either through a private message or through this thread. If argument breaks out and you cannot seem to decide who gets the prize, then I will simply award it to the publisher of the level. Please respect these rules and be careful if you decide to work with others for the contest.

Q: When will the judging start?
A: Proper judging will not begin until after the deadline. Nothing says I can’t look at some of the levels before the deadline, but I won't be looking into them very deeply until judging truly begins.

Q: Well, would you mind giving me some feedback on my entry when it’s been published so I can then republish it before the deadline and have a greater chance of winning?
A: Sorry, that’s not allowed. Asking for feedback from friends or whoever is fine, and taking that feedback to improve your level before the deadline hits is great and certainly strategic. But I am the one person (or one of thecpeople, if other judges are added) who you may not ask for any sort of feedback, given that I am (maybe one of) the judge(s) for the contest, as well as the host.

Q: When will the results be up?
A: This will vary depending on several factors: The number of entries, how long they all take to complete, and how difficult it will be to pick a winner. Judging every level, making an informed decision and creating the contest HUB/list shouldn't take more than two weeks though (and probably not even close to that).

Q: I'm not sure if my level fits the theme. How can I be sure that it fits?
A: Feel free to send me a private message with a bit of information about the ideas for your entry, and I'll do my best to determine if it fits. There shouldn't be too much overthinking with this theme though.

Q: Must the level be able to be played alone?
A: Nope, co-op/competitive levels are totally allowed.

Q: Are we limited to making a basic platformer as an entry for this contest, or can we try out other genres such as RPGs, shooters, survival challenges, or minigames?
A: Sure thing, any and all of those examples work fine, so long as the food-focused theme is followed.

Q: Does the level have to be completed within a certain time period to qualify?
A: Nope, entries may be as short or as long as the creator wants. However, when judging, points may be deducted from levels for feeling that they are too short for what they offer or drag their substance out too much. Essentially, you can make your level as short or as long as you want and still enter it (assuming you follow the rules and use only one level slot), but a suitable length is a plus. This shouldn't be much of an issue with minigames/survival challenges entered of course.

Q: Can you guarantee that you or any other possible judges will finish every level entered, no matter how difficult or dragging they may be?
A: I will do everything I can to complete every level entered, even for those who decide to make it overly punishing. For those who do try to make the level literally right on the edge of impossible though, I cannot guarantee I'll make it to the very end, but I will of course take into account what I managed to see, and why I couldn't make it to the end. But don't worry, I am positively sure I will be able to finish every level entered.

As do I. Good luck entering.

Fantastic! Already have a couple of ideas.

Great, I look forward to seeing how it goes, especially having really enjoyed your DVLC1 entry. Good luck! ^^

does typing count as food?

Umm, what do you mean? Like, typing out the word "food?" I don't think so.

I think he's referring to his upcoming level, "Esmeralda teaches typing". So I guess he wanted to incorporate food into that.

@Dawnbreaker_23: Aa, well, so long as the level is food-focused, bonner should be good.

Holy crap the level I'm working on actually fits this theme in the most twisted way possible. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get it done by the 12th, but I think I'll try. And it isn't about typing.2014-05-09 05:52:00

The deadline is actually May 18th. People can start publishing their entries on the 12th though.

Cool to hear about another twisted idea from you, by the way! xD

I just had the best idea involving bouncy marshmallows, sticky chocolate, and brittle graham crackers with a campfire atmosphere! The publishing deadline, however, starts tomorrow and I doubt that I can produce a good level in under a week... Anyways, good luck to all the entrants and congrats to you DV for hosting another amazing contest! 2014-05-11 08:27:00

Against all odds I actually managed to get the level done. All I need to do is add a few logic features then it'll be ready. Hopefully I won't be the only contestant, that would be awkward for everyone.2014-05-12 06:04:00

The publishing window for DVLC2 has officially begun. Contestants will have the entire week to publish their levels. ^^

Heh, we'll have to see. I'll admit, it would be funny interviewing a contest winner when they were the only one to enter. Whatever the case may be, good luck!

Nope. Just like the LBPC Spotlight's opinions may differ from Steven's, the same may go for me.

I haven't played any the entries yet, by the way. ^^

D'oh, forgot to add that to the op. But fret not, I have already played and judged it.

Yes, they've all been a treat to play. I've formed most of my opinions for all three, but I still haven't managed to beat bonner's entry yet. x)

I've pretty much gathered the vast majority of thoughts on all three entries and have a good idea as to who the winner is, but I don't want to pull a Sackquest and have all kinds of controversy given the fact that I have yet to actually finish bonner123's entry, despite my one-hundred-and-twenty-something plays thus far. Hopefully I can beat it at some point!
