Contorted Cardboard Contest - Opinions Wanted

Archive: 12 posts

Hey, all!
I'm not launching a contest right now, as such, but I have had an idea for one for quite some time, and I spent most of today putting bits and pieces together for it.
But before I go any further, I wanted to ask the LBPC community how they felt about this idea. I want to see if there's any interest and if people think it'll work.

My contest is loosely inspired by the Contraption Challenges, however, while the Contraption Challenges are judged based on originality and style, my contest is all about the efficiency of the contraption, along with the players ability to use their invention for the given task.

The idea is that the contest would be split into 3 Phases.
The first phase, players are given a copyable level, that contains bits and pieces of information, as well as whatever extra things players will require for the challenge.
(In the case of Contorted Cardboard Contest No.1, 'Taxi Toss', the level contains a Taxi, a massive target, and a stretch of land to throw said taxi across.
Entrants build their vehicles over a 2 or 3 week period, and when they're done, they send me a Friend Request, and once I accept that, they send me their contraption, along with a sticker.

Then we move onto Phase 2.
The Copyable level is taken down and adjusted somewhat.
Now, all the individual entrants vehicles are placed inside Emitters, wired up from Sticker Sensors.
The level is published (uncopyable) and each player uses their custom made, unique sticker to summon their respective contraption, and have a go at achieving the high score.
This phase would be shorter than the previous. Probably no longer than a week and a half, to 2 weeks.

Phase 3 -
Rewards are given to the players with the best score, and the level is modified a 3rd time to allow any player to pick any of the submitted contraptions.
(If people wish to opt out of having their contraptions included in Phase 3, they can let me know. That's cool.)

What do you reckon?
Would this work?
Would you be interested?
I'm still thinking over the rules. I reckon stuff like Emitters, Movers, Anti-Gravs would all be banned from contestant vehicles, as they would make any challenge far too simple.
The name 'Contorted Cardboard' is actually a play on 'Twisted Metal' because I love that game. I thought the name was mildly amusing.

Not sure how a contest like this would work, You would have to limit a lot of logic that the player can use "Even motor bolts would have to be banned likely" And if to much is banned, can anything reasonable even be made that works at that point? I think lot more thought will have to go into it before I'd say it's a good idea or not. *mew2014-04-15 16:34:00

Well, I figure the only tools that need to be banned would be the ones that allow people to completely ignore gravity. So, for instance, most Movers are out, but Rockets and balloons/Floaty are cool.
Bolts and Connectors are all fair game.
Global Tweakers are out. So are Anti-Gravs. Everything else is fine.
I dunno how I feel about Rotators. Maybe Rotators can stay, but with a cap on how strong they can be. Maybe 45% strength max or something.
All materials would be fine. Even stuff like Attract-o.
Sticky materials would be fair game, too.

Thanks for your response, fume!

If it was me, I'd give supplies of preset logic for the player in the give away level and tell them that they are only allowed to use the given logic and can not edit the settings on them. Because if you allow people to use even basic bolt logic, They'll abuse it and it'll become almost more of a teleporting contest. *mew2014-04-15 16:50:00

I don't understand how someone could teleport with basic bolts.
Yeah, maybe. I'd prefer to just give people written limitations. If 40% was the max strength, doesn't mean people always need 40%.
I dunno, man. I'll be looking through all the entries and trying them out myself (Tehe. Fun.) so I reckon it won't be too hard to spot things that seem to be more powerful than they should be.
One thing that came to mind was people using multiple rotators on one object. I dunno if 2 40% strength rotators would have a combined strength of 80%. That would be a problem. I'll need to look into that.

I just thought about collision-less materials such as Holo. Those might need to be banned, too. I can foresee a couple of issues with those.

Oh, yeah, I also thought about Destroyers. I think those should be allowed, so long as the environment and objects have material tweakers on them where necessary, to stop people sticking items to them and using a Destroyer that includes Rigid Connections. Allowing people to destroy the actual game environment could be a real problem.

I'm sure you'll figure it out.

Also just saying 1 thing that bothers me about lots of contests I see is vague rules and contest-staff who give vague answers to questions, I'm not talking about your topic, Just others i've seen. *mew

Also I think once you get everything in order, I think your contest here may be fun, But I am curious what you will give out as a prize.

Ah, I figured someone would bring up prizes as some point.

I sort of wanted to see how people took the idea before I go trying to procure rewards.
I wouldn't mind spending some money on a PSN voucher. My only concern there is that I don't know how those vouchers work across regions. If I pick up a European one, does it work for people in Asia or the Americas?
I'd also go bug StevenI and see what the rules are regarding Pins and stuff. I wonder if there's a set criteria such as a certain number of entrants or something, in order for certain Pins to be used for comps.

I think I might even just leave the first contest as just for fun, and implement prizes later once myself and other people had a feel for how the contest would work out.

PSN cards are in fact region-locked. A card you buy in Europe wouldn't work in North America. In fact, a card you buy in America wouldn't work in other parts of NA like Canada or Mexico either. It stinks, I know. :F

Still, asking Steven for a pin isn't a bad idea. I asked him before starting DVLC1, but I didn't give him much time to reply before the contest began, so I'd say it's worth mentioning it to him (with enough time to reply, of course). Still, there's only a few special prize pins I can think of, and out of those, only the forums would work, and because this wouldn't be a forum official contest, I'm not sure what pin would suit it.

Good luck with this though. I already shared some thoughts over at Sackinima, but it's good to see another contest focused on building mechanisms since I haven't heard any news of more Contraption Challenges in quite a while.

well if you didn't want to talk about the prizes right now you didn't need to. I'm just a chatterbox. *mew2014-04-15 19:12:00

Ah, thanks, Dragonvarsity. Right... I dunno how to deal with that, then. Maybe PSN vouchers isn't the way to go. I can't go asking people in other regions to buy vouchers for me to give out.
If the PSN store allowed you to send gift funds that might've been the best option.

I'll Tweet StevenI and see what he says.

Yeah, I posted this on Sackinima last night, but there wasn't any immediate interest. Figured LBPCs more active community would be the better choice.

Naw, fume, I'm totally cool talking about whatever. I'm not complaining.

There are several websites where you can buy foreign PSN cards and they email you the code within a few hours....

You'll need to fix up the rules a bit first. Also, someone could theoretically cheat....it would be better if the players are required use a specific control setting and only the judge(s) can operate the vehicle, so they player can't hide a hidden score giver or something in the vehicle.

Nah, man. I've got that all figured out. Hidden Score Givers can hide from me, but they can't hide from the 'Tools and Used Objects' menu. ;3
I can use an empty level slot to work out all the tools that were used in the creation of the given entry.

Those sites sound intriguing. I'm a little apprehensive about paying money for a code from a 3rd party site, but I 'unno. We'll see.
