How to Make Noticable Custom Badges

Archive: 28 posts

Hello there, cheers for clicking on this guide and I hope that this helps you when you create in the future.

This is just a simple explanation of how to make a decent custom badge, as this can be one of the most necessary things for getting lots of plays. Generally, if you just use a custom sticker, people ignore you level completely.

Basic Idea

First, make sure that you know the theme to your level, there?s no good making a badge completely unrelated to the actual level. Next, you should make a new level with the same background. This is purely because doing a scene from your level would generally be rather crowded, and would spoil it.

Next, I suggest you look deep into your theme, and think of something that represents it.
Examples include:

- Solar System ? Earth.

- Summer ? Sun

- Autumn ? Dying Tree

- Winter ? Snowman

Take these ideas, and draw them out at a medium or small size. Then, decide whether you want your Sackboy in the icon. If you do, make sure the costume and facial expression are related. Next, be sure you have lots of profile space and then take lots of pictures from different angles and different sizes. In the end, one of those pictures should be perfect and eye-catching.

After it and the level are published, change the badge every two weeks as an experiment if you think you could get more plays. If you can see a massive increase on player activity, then stick with that badge.
I suggest that you only ever try this if you're unhappy with the amount of plays and hearts on your level, otherwise I'm sure it'll be great.

Extra Tips

- If you have had levels in the past, do the same as what you've done here, that way I'm sure that you'll be even more popular!

- If you do it in Create Mode, be sure that you aren't in pause mode.

- Don?t zoom in or out on the badge too much, it has to be perfect for all the colours and textures to be brought out.

- Refrain from making it complicated, by having as little objects/stickers/sackpeople as possible.

- Be sure that if you're using text it's visible, by making it highly contrasted with your background.

- If you DO decide to use text, take a shot in front view. Especially don't use angles for this, too.

- Don?t make it inappropriate. This will just lessen the amount of players, and will give you a bad reputation.

- If you can't get a decent shot with your camera, simply use a photobooth instead.

- If you're thinking of adding photobooth points to your level, make sure that they are in decent areas, there's no good having one with nothing else there at all.

Another bit of advice. If you're going to use text, make sure your letters are highly contrasted with your background. If you use dark text, your background should be very bright, and not complicated with other pictures/stickers. Even things that are easy to read in create mode will be very hard to read when used as a badge. Keep it simple!2009-02-04 14:30:00

Ah! I was going to use that, I knew I'd forgot quite a few ^^

One more thing... especially pertinent to text users. Take your photos in "front view" in create mode. Shadows add visual confusion and perspective distortion, not to mention front view eliminates color washout due to fog.2009-02-04 14:39:00

Another tip: you can use fotobooth pictures as well. If you don't want sackboy in the picture, set the time somewhat higher and run away . Also make sure the picture is simple and recognisable, or at least transfers the right emotion.2009-02-04 14:43:00

@Wyth: Do you get any special benefits from using photobooth pictures, like new angles and such?

Yeah, you can adjust the angle in the same way as you can adjust the angle in the cutscene mode of a magic mouth.

What do you mean by custom icons? I can make custom icons without the eye. I just make a 3D shape/scenery and take a picture...

Like the picture in the circle of your level on the globe.
They just get squished up out of proportion..

Yeah that's a pretty big problem. You make the pic in 16:9 but it tries to fit it in a 1:1 circle so it squishes. If I'm not mistaken no-one came up with a solution for this yet except making you scene elongated so when it's squished it looks right. That's a pretty tough way to go about it though.

Mm explained how they did it a while ago. All there levels have really eye catching badges, must have taken a while to get them looking perfect.

#2. The Badge
This is also one of the first things your potential Player will see, maybe even the first, if it's done well enough.

Badges look good when they use bold colours and fit nicely onto a round badge. Badges don't look good with lots of detail on them, say, a zoomed out PhotoBooth/PlayStation Eye image.
Here are some steps on how to make your Badge.

Go to your Moon and create a new level.
First choose a material and then make a round shape.
Now use stickers (the bigger and bolder the better) to make a nice design.
After you?ve finsihed your design, press Start and go into Front View, this will give you a nice flat view of your Badge.
Use the ?Take a Photo? tool of your design, now get the edge of the design right to the edge of the photo frame and take the photo.
You should now have a nice picture to put on your Badge.

Its obvious that they have cheated, you cant create almost any of their badges yourself, they aren't squished and many of the stickers they have used don't even exist! They must have made them in photoshop or some other program, imported them into the game as normal stickers and then put them on the badges!
Give us image importing and sticker editing tools Mm!

Yeah, you can adjust the angle in the same way as you can adjust the angle in the cutscene mode of a magic mouth.

Sorry, i forgot that you couldn't turn the camera in any angle you wish in create mode

I disagree with adding a lot of photobooth sections in a playable published level. Pictures take up profile space, and if your level is good then people are going to have yet another picture taken possibly without their permission which they might not keep. Overloading a profile to the point of it not saving and people losing their progress in create mode is not a good thing.

I guess if it fits the theme and is skippable (like on a raised platform) it's not so bad, but compulsory ones like in MM's levels just take up my profile space.

Ditto! It's extremely annoying (IMHO) having pics taken when you don't want them. I definitely don't favour levels that have photobooths in them at all, and I always delete any taken immediately when they are snapped. If I really want a picture of your awesome level (and no offense, but why would I?), then I can set up a shot myself and get the angle or zoom factor that I personally want to record my memories of having fun in your level. On rare occasions I might find a level that really suits a particular character costume I made and only then will I even consider taking a shot of my little guy against your wonderful backdrop.

This is exactly the reason why I don't have photobooths set up in my photography studio level... I'd rather leave it up to the player than annoy them.

I wish MM had never even given us the option to set up photbooths. It was fun and interesting the first few times in story mode.. but got stale really fast playing creator levels online.

Definitely something to think hard about before doing it. Just because a feature is there, doesn't mean you should use it.

Old thread is very old. The photobooth is the in-game photo booth thingy.

Please look at the date of the last post before posing a question. Many of these people are no longer active. Thank you.
