Survive This! - Part 1 (CLOSED)

Archive: 105 posts

Survive This! is a two part competition based on survival challenges. For those of you who aren't skilled in the ways of survival challenges, here's a video straight from Media Molecule with a few tips:

<object width="480" height="295">

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/PsbjrXMi0AM&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="295"></object>

What is a Survival Challenge?
A Survival Challenge is a level in which these two conditions must be met:

In order to complete the level, the player must die.
The longer the player survives, the more points the player has the potential to earn.

As long as your level meets those two conditions, you can consider it a Survival Challenge.

What are the two parts?
Part 1: Build the very best survival challenge you can and submit it to us before 3 weeks is up. The creators of the top three levels (as decided by our staff) will each receive 1000xp and an Ultimate Bundle (or 2500xp if they prefer), and their levels will be the star of Part 2!

Part 2: We'll use the winning levels in Part 1 as the basis for this contest. The goal here is to earn a highscore (1st, 2nd, or 3rd place) on as many of the 3 levels as you can. Keep in mind that scores set during Part 1 (playtesting and the like) will not be eligible during Part 2 due to the method in which we will be managing this contest.

Rules/Info

Part 1

You have 3 weeks from today (Tuesday, February 24th) to submit your level.
You may submit a level that has been already created, but you are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the time given to improve your level. Get feedback through Projects (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=47) and recruit playtesters in Find Other Happy Gadders (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=43)!
You may submit multiple levels, but don't make more than one if the quality will suffer because of it! We're only picking one level per creator, so balance your options.
If we select your level as one of the 3 winners, you must offer us a copyable version of your level in some way. We will be keeping track of the scores in Part 2, which is why we need to be able to republish it. We'll PM you will all of the necessary information if you win, so don't worry.

Part 2

Part 2, which begins Tuesday, March 3rd, has one simple goal: play the winning levels from Part 1 and shoot for the high score! The goal is to earn as high a score as possible on as many of the levels as possible. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place will all earn you xp.
If you earn a high score on more than one level, you will win more xp! However, keep in mind: the player who's dedicated to winning one level will have a better shot at that particular level than the player who's trying to be great at multiple levels, so be careful! Don't be greedy if you aren't confident you can win!
I'm sure many of the competitors will recruit playtesters through the forums, so if you want a better shot at winning Part 1, get involved in playtesting! Who knows, you may even end up playtesting a winning level, which would give you the upper hand!
The winner of Part 1 is not eligible to win on their own level in Part 2, but they are eligible to win on the levels they did not create.

Prizes

Part 1

Each winner from Part 1 will receive 1000xp and an Ultimate Bundle. If you already have an Ultimate Bundle, you may opt to accept 2500xp instead.

Part 2

Each first-place win will earn you 1000xp and an Ultimate Bundle. If you already have an Ultimate Bundle, you may opt to accept 2500xp instead.
Each second-place win will earn you 500xp and a Premium Bundle. If you already have a Premium Bundle or better, you may opt to accept 1500xp instead.
Each third-place win will earn you 500xp.

I don't have the time to create anymore, and I was never good at making survival challenges anyway, but this is a great idea! I'm sure I can find the time to partake in part 2.

One question: What if you already have an ultimate bundle?

Yes, but you cannot win on your own level.

Good point. I don't want to be handing out 3500xp, though, so we'll say you can either take the 1000xp and an Ultimate or you can opt for 2500xp.

2500XP is a pretty big incentive, and for those that don't have the premium bundle, this could be a great way to get it.

---

For those that were wondering, this was the next official site contest that is involving create mode. As you can see, it's a little bit different to our other contests and will hopefully be a little bit more encompasing, allowing great creators, playtesters and players to be able to take part in one stage or another. You don't have to spend 50 hours a week on it either to take part, you can playtest the enteries and make suggestions or just have a go at the round 2 stage.

I hope people enjoy the contest!

Ok I have a bit of a problem with this if I understand correctly, so let me know if I'm right about this... Basically you want us to make challenges and here's the part that bothers me: If they make the cut into the top 3, you copy them and publish them under someone else's name for the competition? I know the point isn't to steal the level, I imagine a new PSN account or an LBPC account will be made to host it, but why would one make a level to then have tons of plays on it...... on another account?? Winning XP is cool and all for those who need it, but how about helping bring out some of the great creators on this site by helping them get lots of plays on their level. That would be an interesting prize! Force the winners to publish it brand new when the top 3 are selected so that there are no previous scores if you want. But don't rob them of what helps them get noticed... I imagine there are other reasons why you want to do this the new account way, and I can actually think of a few, but I don't think it's fair to the creators to make something that will not get them noticed, when the whole point of this should be exactly that. The LBP community is WAY larger than just this forum, and I think it's goal should be to help promote its members to the whole community, not just this one. Allowing them to keep ownership of their levels during this contest would be very helpful to that cause! 2009-02-04 15:00:00

This sounds like a pretty interesting contest, I'm already starting to have a pretty good idea what I could make for it...

I'm not entirely sure what qualifies as a "Survival Challenge" though. I want to make a level where you have to survive through progressively harder "stages" (think Arkanoid, Tetris, Bubble Bobble and the like) but due to the thermometer I'll probably want to add a final, super-difficult stage (possibly a boss) and then the challenge would end without Sackboy needing to die (though if he dies the challenge would end then and there). Would this be alright CC?

Level Title: *zombie onslaught*
Creator's PSN: *ham_salad*
Short Description (optional): *Hello,

My second level Zombie Onslaught leaves the player infront of an old barn were you can clearly see something terribly bad has just happend. After you go to the top of the barn to pick up your paintanator in the distance you can hear a zombie coming....

The zombies progressively come out faster and the environment changes from day to dusk to night, and you get three air strikes for when things get hairy and they are about to breach your barn.
*
Pictures/Video (optional): *https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=6983 (I have pics on the thread)*

And I couldn't agree with kapbam more, I think it would be a nice bonus to get some great challanges some recognition at the same time.

Note: Are we allowing survival levels that have already been made prior to the contest? If so, I doubt I'll be participating for the reason that some people already have survival challenges that are tailored and polished, while others have under 3 weeks now to finish. Just need some clarification on this, thanks! 2009-02-04 18:10:00

Clarification on the "copyable" issue: Here's the problem: only the publisher of the level can keep track of all of the scores (not just friends). We are not going to rely on the creators to update scores for us; instead, the entire staff has access to the LBPCentral account, which gives us the ability to check the scores on our own. Like I said, we will be including the author's site username and PSN in the level description. We will also pull down the levels once Part 2 has commenced. Creators are still going to be noticed, as we'll be doing a separate writeup about the contest (including the winning levels and the rest of the submissions). The writeup will direct readers to the actual creator, and it will be posted on the front page.

If you are worried or annoyed that you won't be receiving the play count (that's all that you'll lose, really) for your level during this contest, then don't submit your level.

Regarding Trap-T's idea: We aren't going to be spending our time accepting friend requests, so we won't be officially supporting this idea.

Neverynnal: Yes, we will be allowing previously created levels, as stated in the first post.

I have cleared this thread up as most of it related to KAPBAM's suggestions, which I have addressed. Please try to keep this thread clean unless you are submitting a level or you have something important to suggest.

Sorry to go off topic, but I am rather annoyed you deleted my on-topic post just for thread cleanliness. Next time can't you just say there should be no further discussion of Kapbam's suggestion? This deletion kind of discourages me from wanting to add to the discussion.

unless you have something important to suggest.

My post was also deleted.. and I thought my idea would be a lot easier to keep track of who was involved in the contest... is it honestly to much work to add some friends for a official site contest? Heck, I'll even do it if you want.

My idea also removed the problem of people losing the plays.

The thread is intended mainly for submissions; I allowed discussion and I preserved posts which were unaddressed, but I still plan to clean it out once I read and address questions and concerns.

Yes, but that means more work for contestants; there are some who wouldn't want to add an account on their PSN just so they can participate. This makes it easier on everyone. As I said, if you have a problem with us republishing your level, don't submit one.

We did as a staff team explore different ideas for keeping track of scores, and having a copy of the level move on to stage 2 was the only way we could work out a fair way to do it. Let me give you some scenarios we came up with...

Suppose a brilliant creator with 3 posts comes along and submits a level for stage 1 and wins, but only checks the forums once a week or even once a month for example. It would be putting too much demand on them to track scores for stage 2, something they might not or will not be able to do. Having a remote copy helps counter this problem.

Here's another one. Suppose a keen creator wins for stage 1. If they modify their level part way through stage 2, then that might effect all the scores for people before and after that change, making it easier or harder to get points and being unfair for the people on the wrong side of the change. A copy at one date which does not change for the whole of stage 2 allows everyone an even chance of getting the same possible score.

One more scenario, an unethical creator wins for stage 1. They then have a friend who they want to win stage 2. They modify the level to break it and give their friend a high score, but not too high so it looks suspicious. They then change it back again to the "normal" version. All of this could easily happen within half an hour and no one might even be aware of it. They could bury the points swap under normal updates, accidental moves, extra comments, etc. Having a copy made on a remote account which does not change removes the "cheating" possibility as well.

Remember, the aim is not to be removing plays from the original creators of stage 1. People can play test already entered levels for practice for stage 2, which is giving them more plays. Active feedback can go on as well, which also improves their plays. And the original creation is going to be referenced in the copied version, so people can go check any updates the creator has made.

It's just we need a remote copy to help keep track of scores for stage 2 and keep everything fair from a player point of view. We have to account for players as well as creators for this contest. We have over 3,500 members and over 900 active accounts. It certainly is possible that we would have 200+ people giving stage 2 a go, and that's ignoring all the people who casually visit who might register after trying stage 2.

We will be giving full reference to the original creators for stage 2 in the level description, but we want to make everything fair for all people involved. Besides all this, it allows the creators to update and modify their creation after stage 2 starts without the fear of breaking the scoreboard.

Hopefully this will help people understand some of the reasons we have behind the remote copy idea.

Thanks CC and Elbee for stating the reasons behind how this is set up. If you say that's the way it is, then that's the way it is and it's ok with me. My only problem is with the deletion of posts. If this is a level submissions only thread, then you guys should create a discussion thread and move all non-submission posts there. However, since this is the thread everyone is directed to to learn about the competition, this is where they are going to leave their reactions to it.2009-02-05 06:55:00

Ok I will enter my survival challenge but I dont want you to do anything bad to it! It likes warm milk in the morning and just before bed (make sure you talk to it whilst it drinks). Also keep the lights on at night otherwise he gets scared and you'll have to change his bed clothes. I think thats it.

Awesome.. just plain awesome. I wish i can participate in part 1, but i'm afraid my own level will take up too much creating time... One small question tho: Will the players need to drop into action right away? Or can you have a little story-walk to the room, and then start the challenge?

Also, i'm winning part 2... Definately.

If one of your levels wins, yes. If we like two levels made by the same person, we'll pick our favorite of the two and focus on levels crafted by other creators.

Sweet idea! Here's my entry!

Level Title: Ray Mears' Volcano Survival Minigame
Creator's PSN: turnipeater
Short Description (optional): Survive the erupting volcano for as long as you can! Points get chucked out of the volcano and you are rewarded for taking risks with more points landing in harder parts of the level. Every 30 seconds extra points get spurted out and something else happens to the environment

Oh, sure, why not.

Level Title: VR Dodgeball Remixed!
Creator's PSN: gameguy888
Short Description (optional): Just a friendly game of dodgeball with paint and plasma balls. Also, the other team doesn't seem to play very fair. How long do you think you can last?
Pictures/Video (optional):

Level Title: Box of Fire
Creator's PSN: gameguy888
Short Description (optional): You're trapped in a box... made of fire. It's also raining bubbles and rods of fire. How long can you survive without getting burned?

Level Title: Box of Fire 2
Creator's PSN: gameguy888
Short Description (optional): Same basic idea of the first one, but the fire bars are replaced with bouncing fire things. I find this to be much more tricky than the first.

Level Title: Hang On!
Creator's PSN: gameguy888
Short Description (optional): Grab on to the sponge, and don't let go. Letting go means certain doom. The fireballs falling down on you certainly want you to let go though...

Level Title: Insecure Seesaw
Creator's PSN: gameguy888
Short Description (optional): Stay on the seesaw for as long as you can without getting burned or falling off. Oh, and grab some bubbles too, I guess.

I'd submit mine, but Trial of Skill is more of a challenge level than a survival level.

Good luck everyone submitting to this, I'll decide over the next few days on whether or not I'll enter the fray.

Regardless, count me in for part 2!

Alrighty I got about 3-4 more hours of work on my level. It's pretty simple but has the potential to be incredibly addictive if people are competing for high scores. The level follows the same suit as "World of Color" in a way.

It's not really a survival challenge, but more of a mini-game with a neat point scoring system. You start at the top of a tower and make your way to the bottom by grabbing dissolvable blocks that are coloured and grant you between 50-500 points depending on what coloured block you grab. There are hazards on your way down through the tower and it will be timed as well to add yet another element. Like I said, rather simple but I think people will find it addictive in a kind of Nintendo way (NES that is).

My question is: Will this level be able to enter the contest? You get one try just like a survival level, but it has a bit of a different flavor to it.

If you die and do not get a second try, I'd say it counts as a survival challenge. Go for it.

Its much like my survival level. You only get one try to get to the end. So you either die, or survive for a certain score. I rather like the chance to survive than, like in some challenges, certainly die before it is over. Hopefully I get the changes incorporated before the deadline so I can participate.

I've added two conditions for a level to be considered a Survival Challenge, so you guys can easily check to make sure your level meets those two conditions. I'll list them here as well:

In order to complete the level, the player must die.
The longer the player survives, the more points the player has the potential to earn.

Sorry, but i have yet another question:
Is it allowed to make a 2-player survival challenge? it might be really creative, but i think alot of players who want to participate in part 2, won't find a good partner to do such a challenge with.

It would limit Part 2 considerably, so while you're free to make one and submit it, we probably won't select it unless it's worth alienating those without another player.

Yeah, you gotta move around for more moles to come up, and the hammers can get very annying even though they're only one layer thick.
Thanks for the feedback though, I'll try and change some stuff

Yeah, I though making a survival challenge would be short project too. I imagine I've put over 40 into Rocket Hurdles, and a lot of that is just playtesting and tweaking.

Level Title: *The Mad House*
Creator's PSN: *deboerdave*
Short Description (optional): *In the Mad House you have to grab and activate lights in order to spawn points else where in the level. There are six lower lights to activate. After you turn on the lower six lights there is a light at the Top that you can turn on to get bigger points. I really tried to do something different when it came to making a survival challenge for this. My main purpose was to make something that had platforming elements that would really force you to move around the entire area rather than keeping your character in one area and just keep avoiding things. SO you really have to be actively going around the whole level if you want to get a good score here.*
Pictures/Video (optional): *Sorry i dont have the ability to put pictures or video. if someone likes the level and could make some pics you could contact me and i would appreciate it*

If you die and do not get a second try, I'd say it counts as a survival challenge. Go for it.

i will enter another one then. it has three rounds of races and point collections but if u die during one of the races your game is over. I will submit as is but if selected i will take out the checkpoints between races designed to bring back the players that didnt survive the previous race (as is if at least one player survives the race then all the players get to come back for the next).

Level Title: *Log Jam*

Level Title:Sack'a'light
Creator's PSN:oooDORIENooo
Short Descriptionut out the red lights before they go boom. You do this with your white light beam that follows sackboys movements. Can you make it to the top SPEED 9 ??????
Hope this can still be enered and I'm not too late as the OP says 24th and then a post says 23rd so I'm confused

EDIT: I didn't explain this too well when you start the level and a few people where unaware what to do.
Basically there is 9 black lights in a 3x3 grid (3 in each layer - front, middle and back) These lights start to light up red and if one stays lighted for more then a set time you explode and die. To put these red lights out before they kill you, there are (directly above the lights where sackboy is) 9 buttons in exactly the same 3x3 grid. When you step on a button a white beam of light shines down from bellow it to the corresponding red light. This puts the red light out and it goes back to black.
The rate that they light up red increases. You start off at speed 1 and it gets faster and faster till the top speed of 9.
I think it could be quite addictive if you get used to hopping in and out of the screen and left and right.
I've made it to speed 9 a few times when I was play testing it so I'm sure some of the hard core players on here could get there too

Sorry guys, that was a typo! I meant to say the 24th. Tomorrow I'll lock up the thread (tomorrow night) and post a full list of the levels for you all. 2009-02-24 05:59:00

I just updated my entry (^^^^^ 3 posts up) as a few people that have played the level were unsure what to do

Hopefully after reading that edit, it is quite eveident what to do when you play the level as I can't believe after playing a couple of times you can't see whats going on as it starts off very slow

It's still Tuesday February 24th where I am so I hope I made the deadline.
Here is my contest level submission.

Level Title: Alien Invasion
Creator's PSN: Jedi_Jeff
Short Description (optional): This level is based on space invaders and uses the paintinator.

It probably needs more tweaking but I hope you enjoy it anyway.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

I'd say this contest has another two hours or so, then I'm locking it up! If you want to submit anything else (even if it's not totally complete), go for it now; you might be able to finish it before we start judging (in a day or two tops).2009-02-25 01:51:00
