July 7 - Game is offically done

Hey I've been working on a new hidden objects level titled Road Trip for the past year... off and on. If you ever played I Spy, Where's Waldo, or BiggiSchnupi's MM Pick levels, then you will know what to expect. The scenes take place in North America. There are a total of 9 scenes.

San Francisco - Golden Gate Bridge

I finally published a beta version of the game. If anybody wants to play the game with the screenshots above then here's the link.

http://lbp.me/v/kwj7q4

There might be some unexpected bugs, and it doesn't include all of the scenes yet. But it still should be fun to play

This looks pretty interesting, I will give it ago. Usually if there is a game breaking glitch it happens to me with my luck. If I find anything would you want me to post in game or on here?

Thanks
I saw your in-game review. Great feedback.
I don't think there is a game breaking glitch, but sometimes I noticed that triangle doesn't take me to the objects screen like it should. You have to go back to the menu and choose the city again. Luckily, it didn't happen to you

Also, I have to figure out why some objects take multiple clicks like you mentioned.
You are right too about New Orleans... that needs some cool animations.

Thanks for playing.

No problem, I really enjoyed it, I managed to make the game freeze a lot but it soon started working again (I doubt that the average player would leave and re enter an area 50 times though). By Far the best city was New York just love the theme you went with and it played perfectly every single time reguardless of how often I left and re entered. 1 thing that may be fun is if you add a timer but I would imagine that would be too much logic

My previous hidden objects level had a timer, which I think worked really well. This time I was going for more laid back though. In the final version I'm planning on having 7 or 8 scenes, so I wanted people to easily switch between cities any time they want. The logic is not quite there though. Like you said it freezes temporarily, sometimes buttons dont work... I like New York's theme too. Really appreciate you testing it out!2014-05-07 19:36:00

Hi Smurfy,

I'm looking forward to this cause I've enjoyed your earlier hidden objects levels! And I'm hoping that LBPHub will come soon cause its said that there will be the feature to book some additional slots for publishing more than 20 levels. It would be a pity if this should really be your last creation!
Many greetings, my dear friend, Jürgen^^

I hope so too! That would be really great. If lbp hub for some reason doesn't work out, there is always lbp 3 lol. (I'm assuming they are making lbp 3) Though I would need to get a ps4

Also, thanks for testing my level out!

I added Independence Hall in Pennsylvania to the game. The screenshot looks a little washed out. It's a lot more colorful in the game
Still working on adding more animations to each of the scenes. One thing that's good about using alot of stickers... the thermo doesn't seem to go up alot lol.

Cool. I like the Golden Gate bridge and New Orleans the most.

I would suggest looking at some night cityscapes for reference on the lit windows. I see you injected some colour into them but they're still kinda regimented. I'm guessing you have a Move, so maybe try splotching some paint everywhere and see how it looks.

I noticed that with screenshots as well. When you take a screnshot it doesn't seem to include any of the filtering the game has for some reason. I'll have to see them in-game for the full effect.

Thanks for the feedback. The windows do look a little too organized and boring. That's a good idea to use paint blotches to make it more interesting. There are also gradient like stickers I could try out. I've seen cityscape images at night and there are some very cool looking ones. There's this image that I really wish I could make it like.

In the game it does get a little more interesting because everything is animated (for the most part) when you find an object.

That building on the far right is an instructive example. Each of the windows looks like an individual brush stroke with interesting silhouettes and stuff.

Neat, I guess I'll see when I'm on PSN sometime this week.

I added another scene. New Mexico. This is probably the hardest scene to find all of the objects. It's very dark. The only way to find some objects is to wait for the light to turn on in that area. The light only stays on for about 3 seconds though Pretty tough My plan is to have some cities really hard to complete while some very easy. That way the most diehard object finders heh... can feel challenged while other people won't get too frustrated.

Challenge accepted

EDIT:

Challenge complete. I did like the design and everything but however I new mexico was still kind of easy I finished it in a minute, Just a matter of looking for the things that are out of place. The other new one was pretty cool no real complaints. I really enjoyed the update to new orleans. I still think the flower should spin or atleast make a noise otherwise it is hard to know you got it without checking. However the scenes are as glitch free and flawless as ever, I would recommend adding a 50 style still black and white scene. As the black and white scene in the Graveyard edition was definately the hardest.

I don't think memorizer is a good idea as honestly it isn't that difficult to remember where everything is and it could leave the level only a 1 time play. (For someone like me who shows my friends levels like these that would be a pain)

PS I love the placement of the white star in pensilvania

Well that's a bummer lol. I definitely thought it was harder. I'm going to have to step up my game and make these more challenging. I like your 50's style black and white idea. That would be fun to make and hide things.

I was actually going to replace the flower, which is why it doesn't do anything. It kind of sticks out like a sore thumb lol. I just haven't got to it. I wanted to replace it with beads, and then when you find it, beads are flying off the balcony.

I pretty much gave up on the memorizer idea for the exact reasons you listed. I should probably knock that off the description

Thanks for the feedback! It helps a lot.

The one thing that might make things harder is too add more stuff in the background. The more busy the environment the more you have to look through and the easier it is to miss out on things. Like put a sackboy in amongest a load of random people. Or have the signature playstation triangle, square, Circle, X pattern on a banter consteadly repeated then throw a star instead of the triangle but keep the patten continued. Like in new york once you find the pigeon it is actually quite difficult to find the camera. Also last time I played there was a glitch with ball of string that is wasn't letting me sellect it at all.2014-05-16 19:31:00

I took your advice and added a lot more objects to New York. I really liked your Playstation symbols banner idea, so I added that in there. Hopefully, that makes it a bit harder. If nothing else, New York has some more cool animations

I finally got around to replacing the yellow flower in New Orleans. And Pennsylvania looks a lot different with a Halloween theme It seemed like that scene needed a more interesting theme.

I must have not connected a wire, which allowed a person to continuously score. He got a crazy score of 4 million points lol, which means that nobody will ever be able to beat that score now. I might change the score system, so one person doesn't have 4 millions points while the rest have 5k.

Yeah I noticed that, Also the building in New mexico is no longer working. New york just looks amazing now. Personally it was my favourite during to beta version now it is just outstanding. The update to Pennsylvani have made it much more enjoyible as well. I came accross a glitch where the cursor moved onto the menu but have no idea why that happened unless it is an added feature at the start. Also the animations really make you feel like you accomplished something at the end when everything is moving. I also like how you kept San francisco the same. All of them are pretty much perfect appart from the minor glitch in New Mexico.2014-05-19 03:31:00

Thanks very much! New York has grown to be my second favorite San Francisco is still my favorite. Maybe it's because I live right next to there. Last month I rode my bike across the bridge. But I really like all of the animations and objects going on in New York. You're feedback has really helped and Ayneh feedback on the windows too.

The glitch with the cursor shouldn't happen again. I'm pretty sure I fixed it. I'm not sure why the tower wasn't working in New Mexico. I do know that New Mexico still needs more work. I said it was the hardest, but now I think it's one of the easiest lol.

Alright, so I added another scene. The entrance to Pirates of the Caribbean ride in Disneyland. I'm pretty sure that the building is where Walt Disney used to stay. I tried filling the scene was lots of objects. There are some pretty cool animations, but I want to add some more. Also, I would like to know if you guys like the images below the scene or like pressing triangle to change screens?

I actually found that one that hardest so far. I found that if you keep pushing the analog to the right the cursor moves across the screen. I kind of like the press triangle to get the items up but I think the vast majority would like it this way better2014-05-21 09:15:00

There is a bunch more detail in the level than the screenshots show. I think New York was the most cleverly designed, since it gets more busy and full of distractions the more stuff you find.2014-05-21 13:10:00

I kind of liked the triangle too because I could make the objects bigger on the other screen. I went ahead and got rid of the triangle button though for all scenes. Other people messaged me saying it took them out of the moment to have to keep switching screens.

Thanks I've added quite a bit since I posted the screenshots. I think my goal is to make a lot of the scenes more like New York. Full of distractions and animations.

I'm planning on adding some non-city related mini games that are 1 to 2 players. That changes up the gameplay a bit.

It's definately getting there if this level doesn't get spotlighted and team pick when completed I will be surprised. I am curious how many scenes you can actually place in this level. I am actually surprised by how much I am starting to struggle with these newer scenes. Even on the replay it I can't do it as quickly as the beta scenes.2014-05-23 03:15:00

Steveni actually played the level 3 days ago. I don't know if he liked it or not, but hopefully he plays the game again when I finish it. It would be nice to get my first team pick

I can probably fit at least 2 or 3 more scenes in there. Even more if I delete the menu words and replace them with screenshots. It's crazy how much thermo they take up. I deleted all of the words to see how much space they take up and the thermo dropped 2 1/2 to 3 bars.

I'm going to give you credit in the level's description because you really helped me a lot.

If 2 flappy bird clones got Team picked. I would be subject to question Steveni's mental stability if this doesn't get the pick.

8-9 scenes are good amount, If you do find ways of adding more without killing the quaility that would be icing on the cake but I would recommend setting a limit like 15 as these scenes can take awhile to solve for the average player, it could be an hour before they finish. If you don't already you could try emitting the scenes the only issue with that would be that it adds a lot of lag.

I was surprised by how much words can add to thermo as well in the level I am making. There is a very basic cutscene at the start and takes up almost a third of the thermo. It is crazy considering it is like 10 seconds at best but I think it is due to the complex shapes.

Thanks you, I am honored by the mention. Even though all I really did was enjoy a great level.

Hi Smurfy, thank you once more for having played your level with me! Your level is sooo great, the sceneries are designed so tenderly, and the moving objects are a fantastic advancement. I'm looking forward to play the finshed level and I'll keep my fingers crossed, that StevenI has not lost his instinct to recognize a high-quality creation!

Many greetings, Jürgen^^

I always found your hidden objects levels to be perfectly balanced. They were challenging, but not crazy difficult. So, that's quite a compliment

You're right. 8 to 9 scenes seems like a good amount. Plus, I want to add some quick mini-games. I haven't started making mini games ,so, I don't know if mini games will work even though I keep talking about it lol. I don't emit the scenes because the logic I used isn't wireless. Quite a few people always tell me to make my stuff wireless, but sometimes it's easier to just plug the wires from the cursor directly to the scenes.

Finally got around to playing the level! Unfortunately it was on a terrible TV to be playing it so I can't really comment much. The only thing I can say is that this level does NOT work on older fullscreen oriented TV's. Definitely requires HD and a TV where the screen size option actually works Will play again later on a better TV.2014-05-29 04:19:00

That's a good point. You do need a hd tv to play. I imagine too much would be cut off on an older tv. Thanks for playing again later

I added Niagara Falls. It's a bit different because the way I painted the scene made it impossible to hide anything lol Usually I like making objects move after you find them, but I needed everything to move to make it a little harder. To be honest, I started Niagara Falls and Toronto at the same time and Toronto looks a lot nicer. Not that Niagara Falls looks bad, but the spinning fish make the scene look a bit weird.

I played Niagara Falls and my only real complaint is it is really hard to tell the difference between the object your meant to click and the ones that are just there to distract you. That is as mainly with the sea monsters. what I do like is the background. (I agree the fish are a bit weird) but I also like how it is unique and different from the other levels. The thing which might throw people off is that you have to find 1 object at a time which if the first is really difficult will put people at a disadvantage but then again you don't lose points for not finding them all which is a bit more friendly for newer people. You did a good job painting it and all the fish remind me of those children hidden object books. So I actually really enjoy the design. Not my favourite but still pretty fun2014-05-29 10:40:00

I moved the blue fish. I tried to make it very hard to see, but it probably was too hard to find. Now it's a bit easier. I also changed the sea monsters colors, so the one you have to find is more unique looking. Yeah, it's not my favorite, but I do like that it is different. I also think it's a lot quicker than the others... if you don't get stuck finding an object. Toronto is going to be really awesome I think. You will be able to switch between winter and spring. And the whole scene changes when you switch. There are 5 objects you have to find in spring and 5 in winter. I'm not sure if Toronto will be the last scene. I still have so much thermo left.

Thanks for giving feedback so fast. I've never gotten this much feedback. I think it has made the game a lot better.

The only thing I am not sure in is the fish rotating in perfect circles. It does it's job but it is kind of sticks out when you play the level. The only thing I could think of is to have the sticker pattern connected to a follower and a look at rolator and make it follow a tag in a certain pattern to give more natural movement without having to program individual movements for every object. However that is just nitpicking.2014-05-30 16:30:00

For sure, the perfect circles look weird lol. The follower and look at rotator is something I've used in a lot of my animations. So that could work. Actually, I've skipped the look at rotator most of the time because I'm lazy That's why the bird flies backwards in San Francisco lol.2014-06-01 03:10:00

There have been a lot of changes. First, I got picked by LBP Network so the player count ballooned That's always awesome. The menu looks quite a bit different. I think people wanted to move left and right on the old menu, so hopefully this makes it more clear that you can only move up and down.

Also, the scoring system has changed. You get 1000 points for each object you find and 10,000 points for completing a city. Unfortunately, nobody will be able to catch Mr. 4 Million Point Man in the first slot because points don't go up that high lol.

Also a new scene! Toronto. This is a really different scene because you can alternate between winter and summer. And you must to find all of the objects. You just have to click on the yellow sun or the blue snowflake to switch.

I think the level is coming together. New Mexico and Niagara Falls are probably my least favorite, so I might do something with them. I still haven't changed the circular pattern of the fish in Niagara Falls which I plan to do. Also, mini games

Thanks! Hope you enjoy it.

I think the game is nearing the end of the beta phase. Though I do have one more scene planned. So, that probably will take awhile. Its going to be Mount St. Helens in Washington. The plan is to have the volcano go through the phases of its eruption in 1980. After each phase there are more hidden objects uncovered to find. I did find an interesting 4 minute video on the volcano's eruption.

These days in LBP2 very closely resemble the end of a console cycle; when devs work off their rear end to push the system to its limits. Levels like these are the reason why. I couldn't have imagined using sticker panel like this when the Move Pack originally came out!

The gameplay is a little lacking, though. I just moved the cursor all over the place and tapped 'x' a ton to find all of the items. Such gameplay should be penalized in some sort of manner. (If you're aiming for more of a casual-y sit-back and enjoy experience then this honestly isn't a big issue.)

I do appreciate some of the unique things you've done to spice it up, like the thing with Toronto, and I look forward to the Mount St. Helens scene. It is immediately evident that quite a bit of handiwork has gone into this level, handiwork that could only possibly result from the experience of having worked with the game for years. Good work, keep it up!

Thank you very much! Thank goodness for sticker panel Makes a game like this so much easier to create. It makes me very happy to read you liked the visuals. I did spend a lot of time working on the scenes and improving the game little by little. I backed-up an older version of the game from a month ago. It's really night and day how much more polished it is compared to then.

It is true that gameplay is lacking a bit. I've wracked my brain to think of more gameplay to add. I was going to add mini games that were going to be fast paced with a timer. But then I was staring at the screen, not really wanting to do it lol. I like the idea of the game being very casual where people who aren't even good at games can have an easy time playing this. While having a penalty is a good idea, I think it would be frustrating to some players who don't want to worry about where they click.

I actually did just think of something right now. Every time you finish a scene, you get to choose from a list of upgrades for your cursor. That would probably be too much work though. Plus I can't think of any upgrades lol. Maybe faster speed for the cursor. Anyways, it's awesome you played it and left great feedback!

Smurfy's Hidden Objects (Road Trip Edition) is finally done. No more BETA.

The last scene to be added as you can see is Mount Saint Helen in Washington. This scene is very different compared to the other scenes because the objects are invisible. By clicking x, objects will appear near the cursor for 2 seconds before disappearing again. This way will test your memory more. You will also be able to see the volcano erupt.

If you finish San Francisco or New York, there is a fun mini game with a timer to play. For example, if you find all of the objects for New York, you have 60 seconds to shoot all of the aliens.

Thanks to everybody that has played my game and left feedback. It has helped immensely!
