The Mine Village

Archive: 11 posts

A short level but what-the-hey.
This level is situated on a smallish town covered with snow. To make it a bit better I shoved a 2x Player Challenge in there, some hidden score bubbles, small challenges and a mine ride at the end.

It's had a few plays and hearts but no real feedback or ways I could improve the level, and that's what I'm seeking... so if you could, please try this level and give me some suggestions. Thanks!

Well... I'm surprised you haven't got much feedback.

It is short, and has no storyline whatsoever. Besides this, though, I think it looks gorgeous. I'm aware that you only used three different materials, but it really gives a beautiful feel to it. Most of all, I love how you hid that snowman bubble. I actually knew there'd be one right there O_O

Anyway, I'm not sure how many stars I'd give it, but I recommend it if people want to play a short but fun level.

Thanks! A plot isn't really what I could edit into the level but I suppose I could make a new level with it... otherwise it'd be a totally different level. And yes, the Snowman bubble was hidden well, I suppose it's just instinct after the load of Platformer games I've played in my life. Thanks for the feedback! 2009-02-03 12:28:00

That was pretty good. Not as short as I expected, I'd say it's a pretty average length. It's a very pretty level, but there isn't much guidance (do I go left or right at the start, and from the flipper launcher?) the non-lethal enemies were interesting... Basically just another source of points, but not much in the way of an obstacle, except on the bridge before the mine cart ride (which feels out of place in this level, by the way. It's basically a bunch of free points considering the race is about the same length for everyone.) I played it one player so I didn't get to play the co-op challenge. I like the aesthetic touches like little bits of snow blown up against the sides of buildings. Overall I'd say it's a 4 star level because it's well built and pretty, but there's no story or many particularly original challenges. Needs more hidden point bubbles, it gives replay incentive to try and find them all.2009-02-05 01:11:00

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, that bridge is out of place, I couldn't think of much else that could let the player pass, apart from maybe a hanging sponge circle or two... or some more platforms. And as for the un-lethal enemies... well... maybe I should add more for a start... and maybe add some spikes to them.

I've been working on a plot, too, but I'm worried it might change the level completely. Again, thanks for the feedback!

Well if you are... may I suggest keeping the first one still online so that you won't have ruined it all by deleting that.

Hi. Just played your level. It was certainly short but sweet. But perhaps too short? After riding on the mine cart I was expecting more but I never got it. It wasn't very challenging either. I was able to charge right through it. The only part I had trouble with was the plane switching part at the bridge.

Also it doesn't feel like a mining village. If it wasn't for the mine cart and the title of the level I wouldn't haven't even thought it was a mining village.

One final note. Whilst the creatures were certainly interesting I found I could by-pass them completely because they weren't in my way, except for the one on the bridge and were not lethal. Any challenge they were supposed to bring to the level is lost. The only reason I could find for killing them was to collect prize bubbles and I'm not the kind of guy to go around collecting bubbles.

Overall I gave it 3 stars. It was over before I really got into it. Not very challenging. On a positive side it certainly isn't the worst I have played and I enjoyed it while it lasted.

For F4F can you take a look at my level "Sackboy Saga Episode 1 - Attack of the Flower Fiends" There is episode 2 as well but I need to edit a few things on it. Thank you!

Yeah, I ought to change it a bit... so much for the mine village. Pleh.
And yes, the mine cart was the only part that suggested that it had anything to do with mining. As for the challenging bit, this level was more orientated for the people who reckon my other levels are near-impossible... check Crumby Castle Capers for instance... yeah. But I can make it challenging. Oh yes. Perhaps I could make it longer, with a boss or something... anyway, thanks for the feedback!

HEy,

This level is beautiful!!!
I had a lot of fun playing in it. Your custom content is great and there is good attention of details. The Background screens are rich.
I just regret it was so short...
I also suggest to add more light effect in the level.

Haha, wow, thanks.
Would you believe one of the most common tags for this level was 'long'? Weird, huh. Even I think it's short. Maybe I'll add a bit to it when I can be bothered, hehe.

Here's a quick review...

The good stuff:
- Visually, it's very beautiful. I never use that particular metal material myself because I think it looks a little gaudy. But in your level it was used to perfection.
- Interesting-looking enemies (um... those ARE snails right?)
- Well-designed obstacles, good pacing. Loved the mine cart ride!
- Score and prize bubbles. I know some people hate these. Even I delete the prizes I receive from use-made levels. But I always look for these in a level. I think the challenge of collecting score and prize bubbles raises the fun factor of a level.

Stuff that need improvement:
- No story. Actually, although I always look for a good story in a game, I don't believe a good story is absolutely necessary to make a level/game great. Some of the greatest games out there have mediocre to zero stories. But you at least HAVE to give the player a REASON/MOTIVE to be in your level, to play it, and to finish it. Even if it's just to crush cute little snow snails to extinction.
- Some variation in the enemies. You could have bigger snails, dangerous snails, snails that fly, etc...
- Very short. Which is a pity, because I was having fun! You should definitely add more to this level.

Add more to this level, and I'll give it 5 stars!!
