GIMP config

While we all love GIMP its interface is terrible. However, it doesn't have to be that way.

It wasn't until recently that I honestly tried to configure GIMP and it wasn't that bad. If you want to kill yourself every time you open an image in it, here's a short guide on how to set it up to your liking:

The first step is to go to the Windows menu and put yourself in Single-Window Mode if you aren't already. Then, hit Edit > Preferences and trawl through everything there. You'll probably want to fiddle most with the Theme, Toolbox, Default Image, and Appearance menus. I used this (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/?content=160952) theme.

All the tool dialogues can be drag and dropped where you like. I recommend just removing them all and starting over. Go to Window > Dockable Dialogues and choose what you want. I primarily use the Colors, Tool Options, Paths and Layers dialogues.

Along with all this, you can change the splash-screen (http://docs.gimp.org/en/customize-splashscreen.html) to something less ugly. You can use mine, if you want:

If you're more interested in art and painting then Krita (http://krita.org/) is a good alternative to GIMP.

One window mode is nice for single monitor desktops, but I honestly prefer the regular interface since I have more than one monitor.

That theme does look nice though... a bit off-topic, but what distro is this? Arch?

True that. It would be nice if GIMP came with a bunch of different interface presets that people could easily switch between, depending on what you want to do and your hardware. The thing I hear over and over is how much the default interface sucks.

I forgot to mention you can configure your own keyboard shortcuts by going to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts. A lot of stuff doesn't have keybindings by default. The most useful one for me was mapping Edit > Paste As > New Layer since I use that a lot.

Yeah, been running Arch since late last year.
