KZ2 - BTS. An in-depth look.

Archive: 18 posts

With the recent post here about Killzone2 and the buzz being generated by the games release later this month, I thought I'd post this in-depth BTS video for you all to gander at. There are no story line spoilers at all... just lot's of eye-candy.

This is by far the most comprehensive look at the ground-breaking technology that has gone into the production of this most highly aniticipated FPS.

Being a fan of the franchise and as someone who works in both animation and live action film/television special effects, even I am astounded with the attention to detail the folks over at GG have put into this game.

It's a long video but completely worth the time invested in watching it. So go make a pot of coffee or make a little snack and sit back and get a new appreciation for what gaming developers do to satisfy themeselves and their fans.

It's official. I need to learn to speak Dutch. (Aren't technical terms great? Completely bypasses the language barrier. Especially if you speak English.) It seems very natural, as opposed to some other languages. (You know who you are.)

Great video. I watched it in segments off IGN, but it's the same thing. Very cool to see the inside of the developer talking about all the technical aspects of making likely the most technically advanced game ever. Guerrilla has really become a lot better at what they do with even this game. Seeing the wreck of their first game and the general disappointment of Killzone of yore, seeing them really able to do what they really want to and polish it intensely really makes the entire game.

Agreed! Yeah... I found it surprising how many of the non-technical terms were so close to English as well.

It's awesome but it's very sad that with all this tech and knowledge they couldn't make so the game is actually responsive.

There's like tierce of a second of input lag in the game. It's borderline acceptable for an FPS game if you tell me.

Other major releases of talented devs normally don't suffer from this and with great devs it shouldn't happen like in the case here. Really bad priorities on their part.

If you are talking about the gun lag that is on purpose, they added it for "weight"

If not I have no clue

Not the gun lag. You can feel lag about anything. Move your camera joystick and the camera will follow after a delay. This shouldn't be there. It also handicap you at aiming for no good reasons.

Make your final criticisms after the game comes out....not based off the demo

Uhh...yeah. That's not something they "failed" at. This is very intentionally not a run-and-gun shooter by any means. The controls are not lighting-quick with a reason, for the feeling of actually being an armored soldier with equipment and a gun that actually does weigh seven points, not weightless across the board. It's not just a restriction for no reason. It's made that way. Called realism. Try it sometime.2009-02-10 15:41:00

I don't mean it's not fast. Being slow will give a sense of weight and this is perfectly welcomed for me. It's about the time the game take to execute your input that's all. There is a lag and it shouldn't be there. It's not game design it's bad prog.

Doesn't kill the game though. I'm just deceived that a majoy and talented develloper can overlook responsiveness like that. Also, many people don't even perceive such lag. Many HDTVs out there also have lag and people don't mind/notice.

I think you may be experiencing an issue that's isolated to your setup. The game feels very responsive to me and I should know; I've played the demo some thirty times by now. Possible this "lag" is just on your end?

I don't know if this is the same thing.. but I found aiming pretty unresponsive.
When I didn't push it hard enough it barely moved so when I tried to correct it and tried to push a little harder than I'd expected it shot way past where I was aiming.
I tried adjusting the sensitivity but it really didn't help anything at all..
It was a wonderful demo.. but I just couldn't get to grips with the most important thing in the game..
Hope it's something you can get used to

I'd agree this is a correct assessment of the aiming system especially when looking down the sights of the gun. However, I don't think it's something that needs to be corrected so much as we should just adapt. Just because something doesn't play exactly like Call of Duty or Resistance doesn't make it bad or wrong for that matter.

It's just different and - in my opinion - it's a more rewarding experience because of it.

It's not my setup because I would have that lag in every other game. Also, a setup will lag because it processes special effect and upscaling/downscaling to your image. My TV does none of that the way it's set. I'm set up especially for gaming. As I said before, you might not notice the input lag, it's not THAT dramatic.

It's possible that it's the acceleration in the aiming that doesn't suit you. When you push the joystick a little it goes slow it helps you aiming precisely. Then the more your push the joystick the faster the camera moves until it hits some top speed.

All good points made by everyone. I haven't got the demo (and would frankly rather wait for the full package so I can enjoy the experience until my body shuts down and tells me to go to bed), but I experienced no lag in response time that I can recall during the beta test phase. With the game being pushed to it's limits in the online beta, I can't see how anything could change for the demo or actual game in the sense of getting worse.

As stated though, Killzone2 is unique and very realistic in it's feel. That's the reason I fell in love with the very first Killzone. A lot of people used to complain that it took too long to reload your gun in Killzone. Really? And how fast do you think soldiers in the real world can do it? This isn't some Jesse James cowboy fantasy world. This... is war!

Cheers for that it's an interesting video.

I've pre ordered my copy. It might drag me away from LBP and Bad Company.

Aha.. that kinda makes sense..
Is there any way to kill the acceleration?

Well, in the demo there's no setting for that. Let's cross our fingers for an option in the full game.
