Spotlight 7 Honerable Mention - Little Big Tron

Archive: 13 posts

level: Little Big Tron
by: Morgana25
location: north of Wisconsin, USA on the Map. (sort of the Lake Superior area)

This is my fourth level. It's an homage to the Movie Tron.

As soon as I saw the VR material from the MGS Pack - I knew I had to try to do this level.

UPDATE: I shot this video of the level. Forgive the amateur mistakes I'm sure I made filming it and enjoy.

It opens with my usual "subtle" level title area... it's sort of my thing. I'm a Graphic Designer so I really get into having a large text section with the level name depicted. It started with my level Little Big Apple and sort of stuck after that.

Then the interactive areas really begin. You must take out an enemy on the game grid to progress. I initially wanted something more like the film but my limited switch knowledge (which I'm trying to get better at) sort of limited what I could do. Then - my favorite part - the Light Cycles. I had fun designing these. I wanted all 3 colors of Light Cycles available so I designed them to only take up one plane of the level. The downside was I needed to have them dissolve in order to get the player out of them at the end of the race. It worked in terms of that's how they get out in the movie but I didn't understand how to do it technically. Finally figured it out. I think it turned out nicely.

Then you face off against the "bad" Recognizers. Had a lot of fun getting the shape on these guys right. (Fans of the film will notice that the Recognizer you ride to the upper level has a broken leg like the one Flynn assembles in the film. If you play with it on your own moon - it wobbles from the spring attachment - makes me giggle.)

After riding up the Blue Recognizer, you find yourself in a long hall that has blue and red shapes appearing and dissolving. These are my representations of the "bit" from the film... wanted one to follow the player but it was way too hard for my limited ability to figure out. Once your through this section you will have your first encounter with a grid bug. An extremely minor part of the film but always one of my favorites as a child - I had to include them. Once through this section you will ride up to the Solar Sailer. The design of the ship isn't exactly right but I think it works for the level. Had to make sure to include the laser it rides along too.

Now the final battle. My thermometer was full so I opted not to have any battle with Sark but he makes a brief appearance at the entrance to the room with the MCP. The MCP itself was tricky. I had a few different ways to destroy him before deciding on the final version. He's so static that I wanted movement in the room and with the paint gun it made sense to have the stuff to shoot do the moving. The one thing that didn't change was I knew I had to show the disk dropping down on him and the quote... "end of line."

I include most of the major parts of the level in prize bubbles in case anyone wants to play with them in a different sort of level or just see how I put them together.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the level. I'm always trying to improve my understanding of how to do things in LBP. Thanks for reading and Thanks for playing Little Big Tron.

I know - it's sort of an ignored level of mine. It's got decent plays on it but it's been up a long time. It's really my "breakthrough" level when I figured out how to do some more complicated stuff. I'm really proud of it. I know there are some noob mistakes in it but overall it's fun and I think it's pretty cool looking. Hope you like it!2009-04-14 00:20:00

Yeah - I didn't realize you only had one reply on this - and at that, just a promise to go play it. I didn't bother to come leave you feedback cuz I thought this was old hat for you, and that you probably had a full thread (especially considering the utter lack of bugs I found).

I played this a few days ago while going around playing some of the levels of creators I've hearted (for your Chromastone Chronicles, obviously... I need to just take a moment here and add once again what a beautiful and enjoyable series those levels are... how are you coming on CC IV?).

I had a great time in this level. Once again, your artistic talent is showcased here. This VR material looks cool just about anywhere, but you manage to make it look cinematic.

I really didn't find any bugs. Nothing broke or really didn't work for me. I got squished underneath a few of your platform/elevators, but that's just my bad gaming skillz at work. So just a few critiques: The first would be the light-cycle (?) race. I was expecting a super fast ride when I got on it, and it just kinda putters along. The visuals during the race are great, and the bikes themselves are masterpieces! I was just a little disappointed (and I do mean just a little) by the lack of speed. Similar critique on the ride up along the top - not so much for the speed but just for the lack of anything happening. It's not a long ride thankfully, but it seems to serve no purpose but to get us from one side of your level to the other. Maybe add some points to jump up for, or some more of your clever back ground visuals like on the bike race. And finally your boss... while it looks pretty cool, it was way too easy to kill (and if I'm saying that, then trust me... way too easy). Okay that's all I can find to say negatively about this level - hope it wasn't too harsh.

The rest of the level is amazing. You make some of the best looking, most engaging NPCs I've seen in LBP. I love your Trons. And the bugs. I also really liked the variety of game play elements... a little shooting, a little platforming, a few puzzles, and lots of point bubbles if you're willing to look for them and work a little for them.

Just another fine example of what a talented, imaginative creator you are Morgana. Wish they all made 'em the way you do - with attention to detail and a love of the game.

5 stars and Hearted (plus two more replays for the sheer fun of it)!

Lol at you showing off wearing your neon helmet in the video, I always do that multiplayer and guys are like "Woah dude!! Ur teh Aw3S0m3 H4H or I leik mebe p0wN u!!"

I must get around to playing this level then...

EDIT:

Great level, I like the NPC that follows you. The gameplay was reasonably good, I haven't seen the film so I dunno what the references mean, but it is the best Tron level I've played! The graphics were great, almost CS great!

5/5 and a heart!

I don't think I have an NPC that follows - did you play Taffy's level?2009-04-14 01:28:00

I meant the guy that keeps re-appearing.

And yes I did play Taffeys level, but I think yours is a bit better.(no offence to Taffey)

Thanks for leaving feedback! I wasn't sure why no one wanted to leave feedback on this one but the CS levels were getting alot of feedback. lol

Thanks for that! I do love making characters and the Tron one's were fun because I got to add lights and different textures. They don't have many stickers, I got into that with the CS series but the Tron ones are some of my favorites.

CS4 is coming along nicely. I'm only a little over 1/3 done with it because I'm trying to actually add wind to it. Serves me right for trying to be all technical - it's sort of making me rethink a bunch of the stuff I had planned for CS4 - but the visuals are really cool imo.

Thanks for that too - I like to make them look as cool as possible. The VR material is really interesting to mess around with. It glows if you can light it right and for the Tron level it was the reason I had to make the level.

I really didn't find any bugs. Nothing broke or really didn't work for me.

That's awesome! I playtested the heck out of it so I'm glad it all worked. It's got some of the most complicated switches I've ever done in it so I'm happy it works.

The visuals during the race are great, and the bikes themselves are masterpieces! I was just a little disappointed (and I do mean just a little) by the lack of speed.

The bikes were fun to design. I know they are a bit slow.... ok, they are slow but if I made them faster you missed the Recognizers in the background. It's really that I didn't have the skills to plan that section better and get the timing right with the recognizers. I do give the bikes away at the end of the level so if you want to juice them up on your moon you could. I think HardSync is playing around with them on his moon. He said in one of his posts that he's got them to the point where he can have them do controlled wheelies. Sounds like fun to me!

Similar critique on the ride up along the top - not so much for the speed but just for the lack of anything happening. Originally I wanted bubbles along that section but my thermo is MAXED. I can't add a single bubble or sticker at this point without ripping out a section. I agree it's a little slow and not as interesting as the rest of the level but it is what it is at this point.

And finally your boss... while it looks pretty cool, it was way too easy to kill (and if I'm saying that, then trust me... way too easy). Okay that's all I can find to say negatively about this level - hope it wasn't too harsh.

The boss is pretty easy as long as you know which plane you're in. I didn't have a lot of experience setting up bosses at the point I set him up and I thought it was pretty tricky. I just loved the look of it and was thrilled I got the wiring to work the way I wanted.

Thanks!!! *blush* I'm just glad people like them. You're never too harsh! I enjoy constructive criticism and never take anything like that personally.

Just played this...

+ I love the neon visuals...they capture the flavour of the original movie brilliantly.
+ The character models look good, like a lot of time and effort has been put into them
+ The abstract feel of the environment gave me a weird, dislocated feeling which made playing the level quite an unsettling experience, but in the good way (like watching a David Lynch movie) rather than the bad way (like finding your dad in bed with your uncle).
+ I didn't encounter any glitches or get stuck on scenery, so the level played through fluidly.

- Although I got a buzz seeing a replica Tron cycle, it actually feels like riding one of those motorised shopping carts which you see old people driving. Boost the speed on that thing and you'll get extra kudos.

Four stars and hearted, tagged as "funky".

I've played most of the Tron levels out there I think. I'll double check I tried that one in particular. I love how all of us made them so different!

I'll take a second look at the speed on the bikes - at the time, getting the timing right with the recognizers on top was nightmarish to me but I'm much less skittish about that sort of stuff now so I might be able to speed them up... won't be a very long race then though. lol

EDIT:k - I made the bikes faster - trade off is you have less time to get to the finish now (it's a pretty short race) Only downside is there is a minor chance that if you let go of the sponge you can flip the car now. I'll have to see if I get more complaints about that versus speed. Alright speed demons - have at it!

btw... Love that it's Lynch and not the other incredibly disturbing image! LOL
(well put too - you sir - are very creative!)
