City Of Heroes

I've always wanted to try a MMO cause they have such a lot of playtime in them, but I've never liked the whole fantasy, medieval swords and sorcery themes. I hate that stuff. But City of Heroes (an MMO in a city where you make your own superhero and what not) seems pretty cool, so i'm downloading the free 14 trail atm. It's 2.7 gig so it won't be done till at least tomorrow lol :/ Anybody played this then? Any thoughts? Shall i even bother? And don't suggest me WoW. Just.... eurgh. lol. | 2009-02-02 20:51:00 Author: ryryryan Posts: 3767 |
I tried it out once... umm not too bad, and I havent played since they added city of villains.. way prefered other mmo's though so I stuck with them... been really into Warhammer age of Reconing laterly,... love the PVP aspects of that game. | 2009-02-02 21:39:00 Author: Madafaku Posts: 738 |
I played it a long time ago. although my video card didnt fully support it (so maybe my opinion isnt the best.) It wasn't that great. idk the missions are just pretty tedious and repetitive although flying around is pretty cool. World of warcraft is a pretty fun MMO but they force you to play extremely hardcore if you want anything out of it.. IMO wait for the star wars MMO [EDIT]: I've played warhammer at my friends and it is sweeet | 2009-02-02 22:31:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |
I see. They still update the game now so maybe they've improved it since then. It's the only MMO that's interested me so far so I hope it's decent. Free for 14 days tho so I can't complain! | 2009-02-03 00:07:00 Author: ryryryan Posts: 3767 |
Yea man free 14 days, by all means give it a shot... Starwars been out for a while hasnt it? I mean im pretty sure I played it along time ago.. aspired to be the first wookie sith lord... but then I saw one, kindof ruined it for me.. was kinda neat though with the different alliances *(rebel empire bountyhunter neutral) and Im still not sure why I quit., just kinda lost interest... | 2009-02-04 00:41:00 Author: Madafaku Posts: 738 |
no thats star wars galaxies and the current version is a flaming wreck compared to what it used to be....a long time ago it was really hard and secretive to get jedi and it was really fun PVP / community based. after world of warcraft came out they made a huge revamp making it pretty much just like WOW (or attempting to) except they completly lack any PVE content as wel as PVP battle grounds. although they had a cool base defense system of imperials vs rebels.. however i was referring to the one that lucas arts is making (Sony made star wars galaxies) | 2009-02-04 01:15:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |
I used to play City of Heroes when I was in 6th grade. It was... fantastic. Even with a slow computer... I LOVED the game. I have City of Heroes, and I got into City of Villains in the summer of 8th grade. I don't know why I quit... honestly... I was just busy with school. Anyway... If you're going to start playing, I still have my disks. If they still have my account on their database, I think I have something like a level 30 healer class, a level 10-15 brawler, a level 15-20 Blaster, a level 30-35 Master, etc. >___< /no life And yeah, there are better MMO's out now, I just love City of Heroes. /comic book geek >_> <_< I was thinking about playing Age of Conan, but yeah... that's not a rated E game... foo shoo. | 2009-02-04 01:40:00 Author: Code1337 Posts: 3476 |
I loved CoH/CoV I'm not a fan of subscription fee's though so the love was sadly under-funded They're both great games, but I'm fairly sure the communities on both are dying, not that it matters much really - if you meet some friends your set Great games and great times though.... I'm still going strong on Guild Wars (I know the poor mans WoW and so on) ater 2 years, thats a fun game - then again I made some great friends for life from that game....ahh all the non-grind MMO's are dying..... | 2009-02-04 01:52:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
Ohh kool lucas arts is doing one??? that should be good, gonna have to check up on that... but yea best Ive found as far as PVE n PVP or RVR or whatever is warhammer... Love alot of things about that game. Played everquest WAYYY back in the day, I mean like pre Velious... umm that game is the suck... I mean Its basically killing rats untill your level 35... then finding some friends to help you kill bigger rats... Annoying... WaR is cool just because you can almost get by without killing a single NPC.. I like the community quests though so I end up killing lots of them... but the whole game is really fun, and entirely based around RvR... you cant somuch as speak to someone from a different relm, if your on destructions side, you cant make an Order class unless its on another server... Its just pretty cool, feels alot more like total war than most other MMos I played. | 2009-02-04 04:04:00 Author: Madafaku Posts: 738 |
They have flash in this right, But yea i have seen alot of videos on it and it looks sweet. | 2009-02-04 04:11:00 Author: Thee-Flash Posts: 3154 |
I remember hearing about his game a while back, and it always struck me as a cool game. My computer then couldn't run it though, but I may very well try this out after I finish building my new computer. | 2009-02-04 04:23:00 Author: BassDeluxe Posts: 984 |
Woah, i didn't think i liked MMOs at all, but i love this game! Yesterday i got to level 8 (in 1 day xD), i played it most of the evening lol. Can't believe i never found this earlier. A mate mentioned he was playing it so i looked it up. My superhero is a sort of Iron Man based one. He's a Tanker, which means mostly Melee attacks, and is a technology class. And he looks awesome xD Though i need to change the colours on his suit slightly. If this turns out i still enjoy it at the end of the 16th feb (when it runs out) i may just invest in 30 days more. hmmmm. And seeing as this is the first ever MMO i've played, i don't really have much to compare it against. | 2009-02-04 08:38:00 Author: ryryryan Posts: 3767 |
I had alot of fun playing it, I just recently stopped. I had both a Villian and a Hero, and both were a good time. One of the things I found is that even though there aren't as many people playing it when compared to WoW; the majority that do play are really good people. Having played WoW, that was a huge relief. | 2009-02-04 13:23:00 Author: shame656 Posts: 7 |
It was very friendly. I walked over to a ton of level 50 players and they helped out when i asked them a few questions. nice | 2009-02-04 13:44:00 Author: ryryryan Posts: 3767 |
urg your making me want to play it again now....I miss my character, he was an ice powered controller type thing (I forget the real names for them) with rocket boots! whats not to love? I'm going to have to clock some time on it.... | 2009-02-04 13:56:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |

wow those boots are new, omg I really want to play this game now -.-' stop doing this to me >< Have you tried CoV? Id say CoH has the better story and tat, but CoV has better powersets - especially the minion masters for a long time my main Villain was a guy called Spellfurious Tsi who had an army of gun wielding thugs, one of which was a pyromanic.....ok i'm going to go buy some playtime cards I think >< | 2009-02-04 16:09:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
i know the games kind of older now but i remember seeing those graphics before and being like OMG! now compared to PS3 / 360 / new PC games it looks like playstation (not that bad but just crazy how fast the graphics keep improving) | 2009-02-04 16:14:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |
right you lot have convinced me, I'm gunna go order some cards and reformat my Pc...mwhahahahaha | 2009-02-04 21:04:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
hahaha awesomeee xD im on level 10 now, yay Can't wait till 14! FLYING | 2009-02-04 22:39:00 Author: ryryryan Posts: 3767 |
hahaha awesomeee xD im on level 10 now, yay Can't wait till 14! FLYING if i remember correctly you get hovering ....i still thought it was cool and it hink i beefed it out w/ 3 slots of maxed out hovering upgrades so you go slightly faster | 2009-02-04 22:58:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |
yes its hovering untill level 20, flying is fairly cool but I prefer teleporting - mainly because its one of the few travel power pools that also offers great powers OTHER then the main travel power. Like the ability to teleport teamates to you, this is especially good with bankjobs as one person can sneak past all the guards and teleport the team in ^^ speaking of which have you done any safeguard/bank job missions yet? (I forget the villian name) Take good care of that jetpack if you have, one its gone - its gone | 2009-02-04 23:45:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
teleport does sound cool. i was going to get speed since i thought flash was cool. i know speed gives you buffs too but. flying is ....you know its flying so its just that BA...i know you can do team fly too which is neat | 2009-02-05 00:06:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |
the problem with team fly is by the time you get it everyone around you will have they're own travel powers anyway, so its only really good for transporting low level people...which teleport other is better for...ho-hum God I really want to play this game now >< | 2009-02-05 00:36:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
i know w/ all the talk of flying and what not i am jonesing to play it...idk i love flying..but w/ teleport can you get around just as fast as fly? in that case speed too? i would imagine speed gets you faster but you have to stay put on the ground | 2009-02-05 01:00:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |
speed is technically faster, but you have to move around things so...meh Teleport is faster over short distances, annoying for long periods though fly is your average speed jumping is..interesting, not exactly slow - they're all pretty good really you play CoH/CoV then Ham? | 2009-02-05 01:03:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
i played COH i think i renewed and got COV...i need to get a new computer | 2009-02-05 01:06:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |
Hmm this game may have won me back aswell./... If I ever find the time to play another MMO it will probably be high up on my list.. assuming the new starwars game isnt out by then. | 2009-02-05 01:07:00 Author: Madafaku Posts: 738 |
ya im looking forward to the star wars one by lucas arts | 2009-02-05 01:11:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |
still cant beat guildwars especially for graphics | 2009-02-05 01:12:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
if your talking about the star wars one...its being made by the same team who made knights of republic (its like a knights of republic MMO) and im a star wars fan boy so w/ those guys making it im sure it will be the best MMO for me; not sure about anyone else | 2009-02-05 01:21:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |
i was going to get speed since i thought flash was cool. I loves you | 2009-02-05 01:34:00 Author: Thee-Flash Posts: 3154 |
flight is at level 14. i can hover atm I'm also gunna get super speed. i had an awesome time on it last night. I was doing a mission with a friend, who then invited a friend of his. But my friend got d/c so it was me and this guy. We did the mission, then he just showed me tons of awesome stuff, and helped me out alot as well. Must of been talking for a good hour or so. He showed me what all my powerups would look like at max too which was awesome, as he was near level 50 with multiple characters. It was **** fun to be fair. | 2009-02-05 12:42:00 Author: ryryryan Posts: 3767 |
have you had a look at binds? if you dont mind putting in a few minutes of easy coding they're hellishly fun you can do all sorts of things with them, its basically creating your own buttons I remember writing a list of 10 of those terrible superhero puns (My guy was an ice guy so they were things like "Freeze!" and "Give em the cold shoulder" and many more groan inducing jokes) I set it up so he'd shout one every time he threw a punch...ahh fun...I wish those cards would arrive.... http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/The_Incomplete_and_Unofficial_Guide_to_/bind Oh I also had one to when bored I could pull out a rubix cube and shout "**** you Dr. Rubix!" | 2009-02-05 14:28:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
I loves you lol...i want to get this game now! they need to put it out on ps3 lo also i didnt think you could get like fly AND speed or teleport etc. | 2009-02-05 15:30:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |
well I *think* you can, but its pretty redundant and takes up some otherwise well used power pools | 2009-02-05 16:00:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
so anyone know if there is any PVE or PVP content ? i havnt' played it in a while...or is there raids? my friends giving me flak saying i would get bored quick. but the whole idea of the game (just being a super hero and being able to fly etc.) makes this game seem fun to me | 2009-02-05 16:06:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |
I havnt played it since issue 11 (I think they're on 13/14 now) but as far as I can tell the PvP/PvE content is as strong as ever - especially the PvE. I know theres a bunch of new power sets like shields and duel blades and so on also i don't know how long ago you were playing but you can customise the look of your gear these days which just adds to the whole look of things (like the ability to not be stuck with an old-fasioned wooden bow on a techno guy, you can even get bows with laser sights now ><) there are raids but I cant think what they're called....err task foreces I think - I dunno I never got a high enough level to do them. Oh and theres always the "mini" raids where you get to protect/raid banks - those are very fun. You can also adjust the difficulty of the game which is odd for a MMORPG, but it means its easy to level if your good enough. thats all I can think of now..bear in mind I'm going from memory hehe - oh and paragon wiki | 2009-02-05 16:44:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |
ahh I've reformated my computer, download the client and I'm now only an hour (sigh) away from playing thanks for reminding me such a great game exists ^^ | 2009-02-08 00:23:00 Author: Mrgenji Posts: 803 |

Wow i just checked it out. That looks awesome. Ages away yet though i know and the best part FLASH IS IN IT!!!!! | 2009-02-08 01:21:00 Author: Thee-Flash Posts: 3154 |
so anyone know if there is any PVE or PVP content ? i havnt' played it in a while...or is there raids? my friends giving me flak saying i would get bored quick. but the whole idea of the game (just being a super hero and being able to fly etc.) makes this game seem fun to me I've been playing this myself since the CoH beta (quite awhile ago, lol), and am a huge MMO fan, so hopefully I can drop some helpful info in here. First of all, yes, there is both PVE and PVP content, as there is in most MMOs. HOWEVER. Dont go into this expecting something like Warcraft. WoW is an extremely traditional MMO (and one I dont like, honestly), and CoH/CoV, most certainly, is not. Just the combat alone.... in WoW you've got your basically mindless auto-attack combat that you'll be doing most of the time. You'll wanna fight just one enemy at a time, and you'll repeat the same string of actions in each fight. And chances are, the enemies dont have much differences between them except maybe some slight stat alterations. Even in groups, you wont really have to think all that much. Not so in CoH. Firstly, there ISNT any auto-attack. Your ability to fight is ENTIRELY dependant on the powers you have (and you'll get alot of them). Combat tends to be wild and chaotic..... even soloing, you'll regularly be fighting GROUPS of foes, as opposed to just one at a time. And with a full group of 8? Expect encounters of 50+ enemies or more all at once, at times, depending on the mission. And different enemies can do dramatically different things.... you've got guys that can build shielding units to protect their friends (holy crap is that annoying), guys that teleport around and poke you to death, or guys that just keep summoning friends, and so on. You'll quickly learn what different mobs can do what. You generally dont stand still during a fight in CoH; if you do that, you die, lol. Expect to be running around, switching targets alot, trying to keep up with the chaos of it all. It's what fighting SHOULD BE. Secondly, dont go into this looking for "HIGH END RAID LOOT ZOMG!!!111", cause that's not what you're gonna get. One thing that always bugged the heck outta me with WoW, is a line I've heard from more than one fan of the game: "You dont get to the REAL fun until level 70!" or whatever is considered super-high-level in WoW. WoW is almost entirely based on getting to that raiding content to get uber......things. In CoH, the only "true" raid is the battle against the mighty Hamidon. The point of which is not so much to get awesome loot zomg, though the enhancements you get from beating that thing ARE rather nice.... but the point is to be able to say you've defeated it. Mostly though, the devs want players to be able to have a good time and experience exciting content at EVERY level, not just 50. Raids, thusly, are replaced with things like Task Forces, and Trials. Generally these things dont need a whole freaking guild to do..... you do these with a group of 8. But it better be a GOOD group (so guilding is still useful), because these are generally quite difficult, and often involve massive amounts of mobs, and probably a couple Archvillains or a Monster or two. It's a different concept than what many MMOs do, but it's one of the reasons why CoH has been able to keep it's population. (And the very-soon-upcoming Champions Online, which could be thought of as a sequel to CoH/CoV, will be more of the same, but dramatically better). If you go into this expecting another WoW, well, you're gonna be disappointing. But then, if you must have WoW..... just go play WoW, lol. Also, one other thing, while you can solo perfectly effectively in this, it is a good idea to try to find groups as often as possible; it's more exciting and good exp. Fortunately, it's generally very easy to find groups in this game (even very late at night, when I play). Just beware of the "ninja" groups, lol. If you get a totally random invite that doesnt bother to explain much, dont do it, lol. | 2009-02-08 09:25:00 Author: Bridget Posts: 334 |
wow thanks for the insight bridget. Also I was about to mention that as well flash...the only thing i'm worried about is its made by Sony and Sony ruined a good MMO; Star Wars Galaxies by revamping it to try to make it a mini-WOW but failed to add any content at all. althought I will admitt WOW's raid encounters are pretty cool; very technical fights with the only way to beat them is for everyone to be on the ball and to know the strat.. (but once everyone has done them a bunch and knows the fight its easy) but from what i've heard DC Universe will pretty much just be a new COH. I was going to mention that but you beat me to it flash | 2009-02-09 15:21:00 Author: Hamsalad Posts: 2551 |
