Welcome to the Flip-Side (W/ pictures and YouTube recording)

Archive: 5 posts

My level is ?Welcome to the Flip-Side? and is the first of three levels I am making that take the sackboy/girl into and then back out of flip-world. It is a straight forward platforming level with a twist thrown in for fun, thus the titular flip-side.

I play LBP with my three year old son a lot and I wanted to make a level that that he and I can play together. This level doesn?t focus on twitch or precision moves and everything resets or respawns so that multiple players can play at the same time or untimely deaths don't break the level. I've added some out of the way areas and with some rewards for those who explore and get all of the collectibles and so on.

There is always room for improvement and I?ll be happy to hear feedback as well as discuss anything that I created for this level or concepts in general.

Sheep-Lord, of the LittleBigWorkshop forums, has filmed a play-through of my level that was fairly comprehensive and of good quality that is hosted on YouTube. I've also added some pictures I've taken of the level.

I don't get much time to play games during a normal week with work and home taking up so much of it. This isn?t a F4F post however I?m happy to try and help out those asking for feedback on levels though it may take a bit of time to get to it.

The next level in the series is nearing completion wherein you take your player across the eight faces of a ?plus? shaped world and I look forward to putting that one out there for review presently.

Thank you for your time.

[Whaaaaale provided feedback on this level earlier but there was no forum thread available at the time. Adding Whaaaaale's comments.]

Ideas going through my head:

- Nice intro, with the music kicking in at the same time as gameplay.

- Nice idea using the mountain sticker for the backround, makes it look all the better.

- I believe you were going for a "kiddy" feeling for the level, if so, you definately achieved this for the intro.

The Pros

- I really like the first race section, the puzzling that has to do with the box is very creative, and yes I did get the key.

- Oh man, this is a completely different change from the normal side, this side is all "dark" and "eerie" nice effect it really gives off a WOW factor.

- Nice job with the emitting octagons, keeps the platforming new and fresh.

- Nice cannon you created there, it was nice.

- I liked the ending, kind of like a cliff hanger, "You will wait and see" Can't wait for the next Flip-Side series.

Suggestions/Feedback

- Hmm, when I used the elevator with the key, I went all the way to the right and the piston started tweaking out, is that suppose to happen? Didn't know what was going on so I went back.

- Some of the bubbles would get caught on the little platform ride, and would "break" away, might want to fix that, maybe lengthening the string would do the trick.

- You can definately add more replay value to a series like this, I know you said you won't be adding any additional content, and I can see why ( It must be at the brim because it gets awfully laggy when I pick up score bubbles, don't know why ) but this is a tip for your next levels. Maybe adding some x2 sections, and some puzzles will ramp up your heartlay ratio.

Overall

I really liked the level, haven't seen a lot of these types of levels, but what made yours unique was the fact that the level was completely "polarized" if you will, when you took the 180 degree trip. I haven't seen that happen. 4 Stars, but it got a heart for creativity.

Hey, Trindall. Thanks for your feedback on my levels. I'm finally done with a couple of my projects and got a chance to play the two levels of your 3 part series.

I have to say I had alot of fun. The second one is obviously the more polished and rewarding of the bunch, and also the most impressive. I'm always amazed and intrigued by these kind of rotating levels, like Walter Kovac's "Which Way Is Up", Seraphor's "Escheresque", Stik's "Neo Retro Platformer", Kiloghraham's "Spinning World's", and "Robotic Automatic" (creator's name escapes me at the moment" but this one I think has the most impressive and functional design in how you have so many mechanics and terrain aspects that function in multiple angles and offer a new challenge once flipped.

The "room" you designed to constrain the player while flipping was extremely cool, and had a great look to it that I think is more consistent and solid than the rest of the level's pallet, which is very much all over the place with colors and textures - not that that's a bad thing, it adds a feeling of fun.

The rube goldberg section, and the little rolling/falling platform thing was GENIUS... very well done. I also like the section with the piston platformers covered in spikes and fire alot... I like the way you have your story characters comment on the world to substantiate it as a unique place.

What I enjoyed the most though was the dev room... thanks so much for that, as one of the reasons these levels are so interesting to me is that I have a project similar to these that has daunted me since I first built it's level layout - it's 3 circles inside one another and I want them to spin independently of each other to align like sliding tiles, and be activated by several different switches, without constantly spinning. I'm at a loss, and have been for months, so the more I see of these, the better.

H.A.T.E. 2 by Voltiare also has an "in-game documentary" and I think stuff like that is awesome. Great job on these, and you've got a marvelous knack for mechanics.

Ok, heres the deal, i loved this level as in i loved the concept and the gameplay. it was very fun and the idea of 2 world shifting into one another is unique and psychologically cool. the gameplay is very mario/sonic which is a good thing in little big levels. over all, i give the concept 5 stars and the gameplay 4 stars.

The only things i can think of to improve such a level would be to maybe make it more athstetically pleasing and maybe flesh out the story a bit more. using the skeleton friom the wedding doesnt really help the look, and kindof looks akward when scaled down. otherwise, its an excelent level. i rated ****

Thank you for the play through and feedback on this level. I agree with everything you mention about the lack of good looks, the awkward skeleton and other things of this nature.

This was the first level I ever created and by the time it was done there was still a lot of things I hadn't learned or understood the implications of. I'd like to think that I learned a bit more and have improved since then though I've only published four real levels since release.

I look forward to playing through the rest of your levels.

Cheers.
