GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR

From the unreachable nameless light down the endless screaming sky--
moaning flesh trembling broken across the cracked wounded earth tralala
music -- SQUID2723
death shriek - debonairetoast; blood - krangballs
'styx and stones' -- weirdybeardy; length 23 min
To the memory of Pier Paolo Passolini

Hello! I'm ApeCheese and this is the first level that I've published in a year, I've actually been working on it for about 6 months, whenever I got the chance & now it's finally finished. It's a 23 minute movie and, not that there are lots of plot twists or anything, I'd rather the viewer go into it with little to no idea of what it's about.

Thanks to leowilly69, KrangBalls, DebonaireToast, biggamerclaire76, ticklemajitsie & everyone who tested it out & gave me advice.

I especially want to thank squid2723, if you're ever lucky enough to work with squid, DO IT!!! I used some music I found off his music gallery levels as a temporary score, showed him what I'd done and after ONE viewing/listen he knew exactly what I was going for and not only improved on it but somehow synced the music to the action on screen perfectly. There were segments I'd created which felt completely flat & dead to me, that I was considering re-doing, but his music always managed to bring them to life & gave me the confidence to keep working.

I realize I haven't given any real indication of what the movie is about or why it's worth your time but, I do hope you'll give it a chance & enjoy it. Thanks!

This is incredible!
As I wrote in my ingame comment, it feels like sitting in a movie theatre and watching a Hollywood production.
This is a masterpiece of a LBP movie and a piece of cinematic art.
You are watching this and are that exited, you want to see the end.
It's so well made: the music and sound effects fits perfectly, the scenery is awesome, the "actors" are amazing.
I don't want to spoil something so I better finish writing now.
Just let me say: this is excellent! Truely excellent!
Thank you for showing that it's possible to make hollywood like blockbusters in this game!
Excellent!!!

Thanks for the kind words avundcv! I'll have you know that I nearly made the main character into a German bunny wearing glasses but all my ridiculous friends called me crazy

Everything about this movie was excellent, and the other "filmmakers" on LBP could learn a lot from this. I love how it was up to the viewer to interpret what was going on, and how things weren't spoon fed to the viewer. Usually my problem with a lot of the more "serious" movies is that Sackboy, as an adorable burlap character, ruins it. But here it helps guise the more horrific things that happen. The story itself may have been sparse, but it was told in a really engrossing and creative way, and it effectively made me feel uneasy. The atmosphere was pretty excellent throughout the film, and the landscapes really helped enforce that desolate feel.

Also, squid did a really good job with the music, it fit it perfectly. Maybe we (read: you) should attempt to make an Esmerelda movie but with squid scoring it.

I really can't emphasize how good this movie is, especially in comparison to the norm.

I've been playing LBP since the first week of LBP1 and in that time only a few levels have sunk deeply into my subconsious to the extent I can instantly recall them as treasured memories of what artistic potential LBP has as a medium of expression. This film has achieved that status and I have found myself thinking about it on several occasions whilst going about my everyday real life since viewing it.

The in game tags and my one word review seemed so fitting for what is such a masterpiece of LBP film making.

The work on the synchronisation of the score to the films scenes was absolutely stunning. The stillness and sparsity of the acting, bleakness and singularity of the environment juxtaposed to those short sporadic violent scenes magnifies the impact expotentially. The camera direction and plot pacing perfectly brings the whole film to a tense climax.

Filmic influences that were drawn to mind were Valhalla Rising and Akira Kurosawas Hidden fortress but the major success of the film is that it leaves the interpretation of the work open to the viewers own imagination to interpret. Perfect.

Thanks so much, avundcv, bonner123 & Enochroot, those are better reviews than I could've ever hoped for, reading them warmed the empty hole where my soul ought to be.

The recent update has my sackbots acting oddly, I'm going to try to fix it tonight, but I have no clue what's going on with them at this point. Luckily, today I found that someone uploaded the level, so for anyone who wants to see it as it was, here it is:

Just want to echo what everyone else has said about how wonderful this film is. <3

I also wanted to say that the level was picked by the Crew for a Spotlight before it was broken but we felt that we couldn't feature it while it's locked. The Spotlight is essentially recommending people to play the levels chosen and so featuring a locked level doesn't really make any sense. We would love to put it in the next Episode if you manage to get it fixed, though.

I couldn't play the level so thanks for the uploaded video! This movie is so impressive, rather intense and sometimes disturbing! Fantastic work! I also have some problems since the last update, it seems to me that its especially a problem with the 3D-glitch! I'm hoping that you can save your amazing movie, I would love to play it by myself! Wish you luck and many greetings, Jürgen 2014-04-14 10:47:00

Oh fantastic! Thank you so much for picking the level & being open to putting it up on a future episode, hopefully they'll fix this bug soon & I'll be able to unlock it, otherwise going into it & tweaking each sackbot/tag could take me another 6 months .

Congratulations on having this brilliant film picked by both the LBPC and LBN spotlight crews AC.
Unfortunately the powers that be deemed it as being too borderline for inclusion in the ingame hubs for newsfeed promotion.
I urge anyone who enjoys a good LBP movie to queue this great work.

Just like everybody has said, amazing film. I love how mysterious it is and the visuals really add to that mystique. It is mostly a silent film, but the few times you actually hear dialogue is very powerful. It is immediately evident that you spent a lot of time on this movie and it has definitely paid off. Wonderful film.2014-06-17 10:13:00

Amazing music for this movie. Never heard music that had such an ominous, droney, intense feel to it. I'm assuming you're a fan of GY!BE, because other than the title, I could see influence in the music and the pacing of the movie itself. Very cool and unique movie.2014-06-17 13:23:00
