Speech Synthesis

Archive: 4 posts

This has been knocking around in my head for a while.

I was messing around with the sine wave sound effect in LBP, piping different signals to it using batteries and a selector. Broadly speaking, each 1% of a battery translates into a 3Hz change in pitch but it's not entirely linear. It appears to top out at around 500Hz (90%), too low to offer anything more than a vaguely human "unf!"

Then I remembered we have a music sequencer, which has a much higher range. After looking up some stuff about formant and phoneme sound frequencies in English speech, it seems possible to approximate human vocal sounds using the music sequencer. At least, E7/G3 combine to create an "ee" sound and F5/C6 create an "ah" sound.

I'm hoping someone else will research and develop the idea further, since it'll be a while before I come back to this.

So machine produced voice acting kinda like the Vocaloids? That would be pretty epic if possible. *mew2014-03-14 17:42:00

If you can do it it would probably sound better than what's currently possible with in-game recordings 2014-03-14 18:11:00

Minor update: while playing with sound effects for another level I noticed the Move Pack has a sound effect called 'singing metal' which may be of interest.

Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like a pure tone. It has a much higher pitch than the sine wave sound effect though, possibly enough to cover vocal range. I'll attempt to map the frequencies it covers at a later date.
