LBPC Mafia: The Somewhat Necessary Reboot - Sign Up Thread
Archive: 121 posts
Reboots are all the rage at the moment. From your Robotic Policemen, to your Ape Planets, and even your Nude Shooty-things. Most are unnecessary.. however the reboot of Mafia Wars is very much necessary... hopefully. On that note, here is the place to sign up so that we can kick start this reboot. No details on roles yet, I will see how many people sign up first (or rather IF anyone will sign up). I wasn't joking. Dragon asked me to post so I said how I felt I'm bored of this now Awwwwwwwwww. I thought it'd been enough time since the last one to make it feel fresh. I do hope you change your mind though. I'd like to get a few involved, but if the turn out is poor, I'll just cancel it.. no biggie. | 2014-03-11 16:48:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
Sorry, didnt wanna rush you to do this at a bad time, Ali. I guess it's different for some people. Since I skipped the last three rounds, I'm more than up for a good game of mafia. I've gone ahead and messaged some people btw, hopefully the turnout is good. ^^ | 2014-03-11 16:50:00 Author: Dragonvarsity Posts: 5208 |

I also think the addictiveness is wearing off, but there is no LBPC Mafia I haven't participated in, and I don't want to break that streak. There were like seven you never participated in. I know. I was there. Anyway, we do need a new forum game. One... RPGish, if you will. Ten, actually. While Ali is calling this a "reboot", this is the sixteenth round I believe, with Burn's revival being the eleventh. I agree though, a different game is due, but this one should still be fun. I'm interested to see how fumet's RPG turns out as well. Other than those though... | 2014-03-12 17:40:00 Author: Dragonvarsity Posts: 5208 |
Ah, I thought Burn's game was the original. Doesn't matter. I've been participating since then, and I don't want to stop doing so now. Isn't every new game a reboot, or a revival or whatever? It's not like there's a story connecting all these games, or any noticeable change in the rules to distinguish them. | 2014-03-12 17:47:00 Author: SnipySev Posts: 2452 |

Yeaah, I just thought by "reboot," Ali wanted people to think it was now Round 1 again, even though the series has been tapering off again. Nah... I just need for something extra to put in the thread title, and with all the Hollywood reboots these days, it seemed appropriate. By the way, is there a certain number/range of players you're aiming for before starting, Ali? Not particularly, but hoping to get a few more. I'm still thinking up roles, but hoping to get the game up and running by.... say Monday? | 2014-03-12 19:33:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |

I've seen this being mentioned and I'll try to fit in. Can someone explain like I would be 5 how this is played and what I need to know and how frequent participation is required before everyone hates me or something? | 2014-03-13 02:46:00 Author: napero7 Posts: 1653 |
I've seen this being mentioned and I'll try to fit in. Can someone explain like I would be 5 how this is played and what I need to know and how frequent participation is required before everyone hates me or something? Not sure if I can accomplish that, but here's an explanation anyway. In LBPC Mafia, there are two sides, the good guys, known as the civilians, and the bad guys, known as the mafiosos. Once the game begins, the host (in this case, Ali_Star) will send everybody playing a private message, telling them which side they're on, and what role they get exactly. There are two phases or periods in the game: day and night. During the day, everyone votes on who they want to kill off (by execution). The person who receives the most votes, or majority vote, will be the one executed. If there are two or more people with the same number of votes, it could be settled with random.org, or other ways. Some hosts will require that a person get a minimum number of votes in order to be killed. So in some cases, if nonly one person votes, meaning that some guy gets majority vote from just one, then that will not be enough (in some games) for him/her to be executed. Then we have the night phase or period. During the night, the mafiosos (knowing who the other mafiosos are) will band together via a private chat session that only they and the host can see, and they will vote someone they want to kill. After night, we follow the same loop, going back to day, then night, and so on. Because standard civilians have no special actions but voting like everyone else, they simply pretend to sleep at night as they wait for results to show up from the host in the morning (mainly who died). Civilians don't know who's innocent and who's a mafioso, they only know their own role, so there's a lot of guessing involved when choosing who to try executing for the day. The doctor and the sheriff ("special" roles I'll discuss in a second) also start off not knowing who's who. As for the mafiosos, they know who each mafioso is, and therefore they know that everyone else beside themselves are innocent (but they don't know who occupies the special roles, like the doctor and the sheriff). Now, about these two roles, that can do their own thing during the night, just like the mafiosos can. Every night, the doctor can privately tell the host one person they want to try "healing." By choosing to heal a person, they basically block the mafia's kill on that person, if the mafia tries targeting that person. What I mean by this is, if the doctor chooses to heal the same person that the mafia ends up targeting, then the person is safe and nobody is killed that night. The doctor is typically allowed to try healing themselves, if they don't really care about the other civilians staying alive. The sheriff's special ability is every night, they can privately tell the host one person they want to "evaluate." By doing this, the host will then tell the sheriff what role that person is. So if the sheriff is wondering what role Bobby has, he can pm the host one night asking. If Bobby is a mafioso, the host will then tell him that. This is good knowledge for the sheriff, and he can try convincing everyone to vote out Bobby since he knows Bobby is bad. (but you can't show proof of your role, and someone like the sheriff or doctor doesn't want to say their role typically because then the mafia might kill them during the next night) The doctor, the sheriff, and most other special roles are on the civilian side. If every mafioso is killed, then the civilian side wins. If the mafiosos outnumber the civilians/good special roles, then the mafia wins. After every night, the host will report those who died by being executed from votes they got in the day, and anyone killed by the mafia during the night. There's another special role on the Mafia side that might be in this game. The role is known as the Don, and when he or she is killed, the death report will list them as a civilian. The game has a lot of guessing involved. The mafia members have to not look suspicious or mysterious. They want to sneakily get people to vote out innocent people as they kill more during the night. The civilians have to try guessing who the mafiosos are and take them out before it's too late. The doctor and the sheriff also play key roles to stop the mafiosos. Frequently participating depends on the host's rules. Inactive players have gotten by some games, while others say you have to post every "this many in-game days," so Ali will have to answer that one for you. | 2014-03-13 03:02:00 Author: Dragonvarsity Posts: 5208 |
In one of the previous games (don't remember which, but maybe it was the one where GDN was the Doc) the host mentioned a rule dictating that if the doctor manages to save himself from a mafia hit, then he loses his healing powers. Is this a normal thing or was it specific to that one game? I ask because in the latest games I've skipped reading the rules, so I have no idea if this is a base rule or not. | 2014-03-13 04:40:00 Author: SnipySev Posts: 2452 |

Sounds good. Any chance we might see a new role thrown into the mix, or do you think you're just going to stick with what's already been used? (Not to imply that either choice wouldn't work out just fine) I'm trying to think of a few new roles that would add something new to the game, without making it too complicated and/or unbalanced. Obviously it depends on how many players we get. Something else I need to figure out is the timing regarding day/night cycle. I could just say that each day begins and ends at 12pm GMT. But I'll never be online at that time to announce it, except when I turn on my PC after having a few pints at the pub on a Friday. | 2014-03-13 10:09:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |

Uh, apparently I didn't post what I meant to post earlier. I will spend time from Sunday afternoon till Tuesday afternoon on a majestic cruiser on the hideous waves of Baltic Sea, so if I won't be online during that period, it's because of that. If I will be online during that period, then my account has been hacked by a mafioso and you should vote me out before I can do any harm. Err, assuming that game has started by then. (Afternoon starts after 12AM and ends 6PM. Midnight is at 12PM. My time zone is two hours ahead of that of Greenwich.) | 2014-03-13 15:25:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |

We should definitely add one thing at this point of preparation for the game: minimum votes required to kick a person out, based on how many players there are. For example, 13 players: minimum of 4 votes, 8 players: minimum of 3 votes, 3 players: minimum of 2. I'm not saying let's do that, but we should do something like that. | 2014-03-13 21:09:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |

See my response to Shooter a few posts up, it is "most likely". And by "most", I'd say around a 98.5% chance that I'll implement it. Something else I've literally just thought about now - how would people feel about a minimum daily (game day, not real life day) post requirement before being allowed to vote? Meaningful posts I mean, involving actual game discussion. I'm not talking massive amounts - probably just 2, but it would mean that players don't just pop in to vote then sod off again. How would people feel about that? Good idea or bad idea? | 2014-03-14 11:31:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
Good idea, IMO. Stop using inactivity as an excuse to vote for people | 2014-03-14 13:16:00 Author: ARD Posts: 4291 |

Meaningful posts I mean, involving actual game discussion. I'm not talking massive amounts - probably just 2, but it would mean that players don't just pop in to vote then sod off again. How would people feel about that? Good idea or bad idea? On one, this would take away from one of the major parts of the gameplay. Not everyone is very active here all the time and if a person thinks another person's reason to vote somebody is good, they can't simply join this anymore. This would eliminate bandwagoning, so with the vote requirement implemented as well, it could turn into a disaster. On the other hand, more people would need to take part in the game and the game would have more layers to it as a result. However, if those people didn't, it'd be victory on plate for the mafia. I am in for this idea, by the way. Do add this, but make it less harsh than what it sounds like now. Two meaningful posts may not sound like much, but that can be much for some people. | 2014-03-14 13:58:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |
Ok, so instead, how about if each vote had to be backed up by a valid reason? | 2014-03-14 14:03:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
Ok, so instead, how about if each vote had to be backed up by a valid reason? Define valid. | 2014-03-14 14:09:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |
Depends, is "I want to kill Rock" a valid reason to vote for Rock? :kz: | 2014-03-14 14:17:00 Author: ARD Posts: 4291 |
Depends, is "I want to kill Rock" a valid reason to vote for Rock? :kz: No, because Rawk is a delightful chap. | 2014-03-14 14:23:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
There really isn't a definitive definition for valid. In my opinion "I want to kill Rock" is a valid reason to kill Rock. I would want to kill him too. I originally made a hillarious joke there, but it probably won't go along the forum guidelines. Here's a hint at what you would've got: http://www.theresourcetank.com/wp-content/uploads/bang.gif | 2014-03-14 15:10:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |

The deal was you help me with RPG first. Was it, though? Come on, don't be nuts. I'll help you with your arr Pee Gee after the game then, ok? | 2014-03-14 16:40:00 Author: FreeAim Posts: 2462 |

Sorry, I meant to get this started over the weekend but have been feeling a bit under the weather. Certainly have enough players now, so could a mod please close this thread? I'll work out the roles and what have you over the next couple of days. | 2014-03-17 10:09:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |

Hello. Extreme apologies with the delay and whatnot. With work/weekend commitments it's been tough getting around to doing this. I had all the roles drawn out on a piece of paper, ready to hand out. But then of course the site went down..... twice. Then tradgedy occurred, and said piece of paper was left in my trousers when I put them in the wash. Now, I could start this week, but the timing is not great since I'll be away for a few days next week. What do people think? Here is the list of people signed up so far, if they could confirm if they're still interested in playing, that'd be great. amoney1999 butter-kicker Darkcloudrepeat DawnBreaker_23 CogMonkey Dragonvarsity flamingemu FreeAim jarreguin001 xxMATEOSxx napero7 RockSauron (if FreeAim is true to his word) Ryan86me (late sign up) Shooter4815162342 SnipySev SR20DETDOG yugnar (I'll also add that anyone else is more than welcome to sign up) | 2014-04-07 14:56:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |

Don't be a quitter. I'm still in. A quitter? There's been no news for this in over three weeks. Life gets in the way, and people have every right to quit when there's been a hiatus of this length (no offence to Ali, I know LBPC was down twice and I still hope it's a good game for you guys). If you're trying to get me to stay, okay. But don't think calling me a quitter because I reasonably have to leave is going to get me to jump right back in. I have my reasons, as I'm sure butter does too, so please try and respect that. | 2014-04-08 14:35:00 Author: Dragonvarsity Posts: 5208 |
