quick question for those who play it by late tomorrow. should I toss the level links and replace em with scoreboards. if so, should I level link or not level link within the scoreboard. not sure how the community truely feels about this. Im mixed, whenever I play a series I want the link, but dread sub levels just incase the link fails, but others don't like links at all....2014-03-11 04:36:00

Wonderful!
This is a heart-warming memory of the time when you was a child and used your imagination in a way, most adults can?t understand.
It's a charming trip into the times when you spend a whole day in a selfconstructed world of imagination and it's a great recollection how mighty imagination can be and that you should keep the kid in you when you are growing up.

The cartoon style visuals are amazing, the gameplay is funny, the story is wonderful and the mother is adorable

Excellent!

You should definitely add scoreboards. It makes zero sense to have the player collect points throughout the level but not have a scoreboard at the end. And while I'm here how do you get the third hidden score bubble in the final level? You know the one where you fall down a tube after getting the cape. Since it's on another layer I can't just glide to get it.2014-03-11 10:19:00

hmmm the one on top of a box, u use the jump pads far below. the 4th is above the lava that squeezes up and in. the 5th is behid the tubes that is accessible if u jump up to the next platform acceessible if u jump on the creature brain.
got a pic?

thats why a scoreboard is need, derp, i am having success at the end of the level, it all makes sense now why 2 people requested it. thank you carrrington, for that i'll take a pic of all the hidden bubbles for ya

First, the cartoon styling and voice work are wonderfully done throughout, although at the end I felt like I lost a pupil on the hug. I just have to know who played the mother? I also love how you transitioned from the story to the playable scenes and gave us time and instructions to understand the tasks at hand. The car smashup was pretty wicked and if my insurance premium goes up after playing this, then I’m going to send my Chicago mob connections after you!

Part two, the Western level had a lot of different bits to it that reminded me a lot of my very own first LBP creations and I bet others too will get the same feeling. This level wasn’t my favorite of the three, but it was quite nostalgic and I certainly did get a kick out of kicking that tumbleweed along! The bar/bottle game was a nice addition for sure, but for whatever reason it took me a bit to get the hang of it, but once I figured out the timing it was easy-peasy. I’m not sure if I like how you displayed the bottle hit zone and maybe that’s why I had trouble at first. I think the hit-box would look better with a different design of some sort. However, you gave me a fun idea and mechanic to make into a nice Drinking level for a Shamrock Team pick opportunity! HAHA.

The final level was just fantastic and the way it starts by “building the level” is just beautiful. This level has all the latest greatest LBP tech and will satisfy most of the kids these days…that is if their short attention spans can make it this far. I guess since you have it broken up in three distinct levels, you can start anywhere. I really loved your fat bubble placement in this level and I think I got all of them except one that I could have gotten it if it weren’t for being lazy and for not wanting to die again. Oh, the ending seemed a bit abrupt with how it looked and took me to the scoreboard. I think there might be a smoother way to transition that for the player…

All in all, you’ve done a fantastic job here telling a story and working with all the gifts that the game and the community have given or taught us over the years. Good luck with the contest!

This touched me (in a good way). It was poignant, sensitive and showed us some personal vulnerabilities we seldom see in this community. It was very brave of you to go down this path.

I think the voice acting was great, even if sometimes the text didn't match the spoken words. The mum was played really well - patient, thoughtful and she really seemed to enjoy spending time with her son.

The cartoon sections held the narrative well and I liked the end section where the boy and the mum built the level out of nothing together - that was a really cool feature. Shame about the missing pupil in the end scene, slightly horrifying :s

You have to be praised for featuring so many different mechanics in this game - the top down racer, the quick time mini games (I loved the slow-mo section in the last level, but the circle button didn't seem to respond for me in the bar scene), the platforming, the fetch-quest - wow! No small amount of time would have gone into this epic.

The first level was loads of fun - smashing the cars was way more fun than avoiding them and it's just what my son does when he plays with toy cars - they get pranged up and there are sound effects and things flying around - brilliant. I liked how the mum took a while to realise the game was about smashing cars instead of peaceful driving Nice visuals there, great sound effects and meaty solid explosions.

The Western level was cool - I liked the fetch-quest theme. I had no issues here, it was fun to explore. I liked the "missing" poster and the dirty mad version of LIMI. Very nicely done and packed with detail.

The space level was also solid - emitting wall jump panels was a great idea and having to work with this tool to reach bonus bubbles was excellent too. I liked the triangular baddies too - really nice work there, not too easy to eliminate.

Concluded with a loving message this series of levels was the best I have played in a long time. We didn't have platforming for the sake of it, everything was in context and meaningful. Playing as the mum was actually an inspired idea - we were living her story and remembering how she used to play with her child and how much fun she had in those times. Naughty Dog would be proud of your story telling

Have I gushed enough? Yep, this has got to be in the top three for the competition, no doubt. I've only played one other entry so far and it was one level and didn't approach the epicness of your level.

Well done. In Maori we say "Kia Kaha" which means "stand proud" or "stand strong" and I say this to you.

Thank you.

peoria and arratia, u 2 are bosses in my book. feels good to hear u 2 say that. u got me blushing now

thought i fixed that eye, the speed of the animation is too strong for it, dang. Ok I know what it may be, think its an emitter not emitting all objects and such. so the tag that regulates the eye (there are a total of 3 per eye) must have not been emitted.

heres an example of stuff not emitting correctly, this made me LOLZ.

I didn't notice anything wrong with any of the eyes. All that sticker panel worked flawlessly, which is saying something because it can be a bit glitchy when there is a lot of it in the same spot. I enjoyed the story. I liked the third level the most... OK I thought it was awesome! The level building before your eyes (I wish I could create that fast!) and shooting out the wall jump and the slow motion part... wow!

Nice work here!

P.s. thanks again for your help. Got it all taken care of.

Ooookay now. I keep saying that I either loathe or hate reviewing some kind of stuff for what they are. If a level is notably flawed, that is the worst. If it has few significant issues that can be fixed, no problem. If there is one aspect I don't like, depending on how major part that aspect plays in the level, it's either okay or not fun to mention in a review. The thing is that if something is done poorly, it's much less enjoyable to review than something that is bad. Like, for example, reviewing a "Paranormal Activity"-movie is actually fun because you get to eviscerate something that makes you angry.

Nothing is more awkward than saying that something with much effort put into it doesn't click with you or just looks as if it's made poorly. Here, this happens with the cinematic scenes with that kid and his mother. The thing is very well executed, as in the characters are well voiced and they don't look outright terrible or even bad. The thing is though, that watching something not move gets really frustrating over time and whenever there was a cinematic moment I just wanted to get on with the gameplay. Like when the boy reaches for a hug with his mother. Sure, he moves and his mouth moves, but apart from that it looks like one of those image-on-stick-theatre things, but it doesn't have the charm of them for not committing to doing it to full extent (since that was obviously not even a consideration at the point of creation).

I could've done with less unique artistic style there for some movement and that's not a phrase I say lightly.

But yeah, with that thing out of the way, the levels themselves... well, they vary between very good and amazing. The car chase at the beginning was done very well, it had a nice feel to it as I could almost feel the impact of every collision. Easily the most "fun" moment where "fun" is only consisting of pure and unapologetic "fun". I think this part was done very well, but since the cinematic before it and after it were both long, I couldn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped.

Then we have the absolutely brilliant Western RPG. In honesty, for me at least, this is the highlight of the level. The costumes on sackboys were pitch perfect, there was awesome amount of detail in everything and it all felt like a part of something bigger. I even loved the mini-games here. It's not quite perfect, though. I feel like there could've been some points here and there, maybe some secrets (or then I just didn't explore hard enough) and I feel like there could've been more stuff that was "unnecessary" to make the experience even better. What we have, though, is a riot of fun and awesome.

Space-station part. Hmm... I think I am beginning to see your point of view on some of the criticisms made on my level...

In all seriousness, I really liked this part. The interior was visually impressive and a load of fun. Gameplay was well made, but it felt very much like DC-hero kit. Nothing wrong with that, but considering the amount of uniqueness in the previous segments and even the cinematic moments, it doesn't feel to justify itself well here. I also didn't like the use of space background here. Something needs to be done with either the camera angles or the way the spacestation's walls are, but it looks very static and unimpressive. This was probably my least favourite gameplay part of the level mostly due to the ending with the "quick-time-event" thing. It worked in the wild west's RPG-ish elements and it's not all bad here, but I feel like there is no reason for here to be a quick time event rather than some actually fun gameplay.

Then again, that would've practically been drawing comparisons with the DC kit so it probably makes the similarities easier to digest.

Anyway, very well detailed fun time with good voice acting and loads of fun gameplay. I heavily recommend this one to everyone. I would probably give this a 9/10 just for how much time was obviously put into it, but I feel like I need to be honest here. There was quite a lot of stuff I didn't like, mainly due to the style of the cinematic moments being mind-numbing, the emotional high-point of the story had no real impact on me and it just feels bland. Still heavily recommended, I think everyone should play just to be one of those who did so and then make their own decisions on what to think from there.

8/10

Wowsers Freeaim, your amazing. I am totally blown away by your assessment of the 2nd part, IMO I thought that was the weakest of the 3, but then again I do enjoy platformers more I tried to build a l

I really wish I could have done more with the animation, but I shouldve made this known to you beforehand, I was limited to 3 levels total for the contest and had a strict deadline to meet. Therefore thermo was a immense constraint. I do plan on having the animations fully skippable once the judges say we can update our levels. I want and dont want to do this, kinda impartial so I am leaning towards skippable for those who just wanna game! Just need to figure out a way to do this without screwing things up Other things I plan on changing is updating the text (in certain spots) to make non-skippable, currently they have the skip option avaialable but does not skip, due to it being on a sequencer, believe this came with the DC update) and there was one more, it was tiny so it probably doesnt matter.

your review was refreshing to read and a pleasure to hear your comments. I am glad you enjoyed it and would recommend to anyone

Also, thanks a bunch one-mad-bunny!!!!!!
