Next Western Sack. Action RPG with puppet

Archive: 10 posts

Hello all! Been a long time since I have posted up here, but now I have good reason to. If anyone out there is familiar with me you would know I do the Western Sack series, which is basically a lightly themed western environment which is on the high side of imagination and doesn't take itself very seriously. Anyway instead of the left to right basic platformer I have been doing since 2009 (Wow 2009 is when I started this series o_O...) I will be making it an open world action RPG.

I have pretty much already crafted this, heavily inspired by Wonderboy in Moster World on the Sega Megadrive, or if you are American, the Genesis. Other inspirations would be anything good on a retro system.

So the level isn't 100% complete and it is merely a level in my furthering saga, I will be building onto this level with others thus making it a game (eventually), as there's so much potential story to be told.

Okay so some time ago I built a logic that allows a save code by using a password generated from a score, this thing was awesome but limited, it also carried data from one level to the other. Level links were terrible though and this was a huge concern for me... But just lately I downloaded the Marvel pack and I discovered the level save nodes! I nearly hit the roof with excitement lol.

Technical.

This level will use the new logic to carry/hold data as well as score to keep a rounded COIN bank system, money is spendable on upgrades health and stuff.

I also use a emit and kill system to control the thermo.

I was thinking of not using level links but using the ol school method of keys and branched levels because I believe it works better.

Enemies are simple yet complex... This is where the true game lies.

Difficulty hard making the player think before they rush into a battle, main goal is to prevent mindless assault, however every encounter and enemy has a few perfect methods that will make it all too easy once learned

I will share some pictures very soon, I just wanted to run of a bit.

When an enemy as been killed a coin gets thrown out of his poof cloud, the coin will give you x - y of value depending on what that enemy is worth, to check your inventory the player holds L1 button, a compact HUD will display showing health, coin, item hot keys selected, current status of task and what weapon equipped.

Oh cool! So glad you're continuing with this series. I loved the last episode.

Hmm, I generally get bored in fighting levels (and, yeah, yeah, undoubtedly my loss and due to lack of skill on my part ) but something tells me you don't know how to make a boring level, lol. Look forward to hearing more about this.

Thanks!

It''s basically a 'light action RPG', you don't 'level up' like your typical RPG. Instead to further the quest you may have to learn how to double jump to get to a higher area, either by finding the upgrade or buying it. Buying/finding keys new weapons etc.

The word "light" in 'light action RPG' basically means not a lot of dialogue, the story will remain very straight forward, but I will try to make it solid and engaging.

This particular level I am making isn't the whole experience but future levels will carry off and upgrades will be forwarded, depending if you don't delete the save data.

The level has zero bot's, every character and enemy is material made.

Each level will contain a boss.

Thanks! It does depend on the individuals tastes. Like mentioned above there is very little dialogue so you're not going to get a heavy story like in other RPG attempts, this level or levels will focus on Coin farming, exploration, problem solving. The first level should be quite easy, though loose your concentration and it can go to the dogs.

The last part of your comment actually has put the pressure on haha.

Encouraging words! Should be done very soon. This level may need a lot of testing for bugs or hardness tuning, so if keen let me know!

Update. After having some time off from this project, I have decided to quickly patch it up and publish it before it gets left behind with the release of LBP3, but I do think what I have made is great and should be played. Here is the link to the level http://lbp.me/v/qr72dtf Do make sure to give a try, and let me know if it's worth finishing. The level is complete-able though I have left out a lot of information within the level, mainly instructions to button usage and story/mission clarity prompts. I have thoughts in making this series into an actual game, an indie title so it's future might be continued.2014-06-01 23:03:00
