STAR WARS: Jabba's Palace: err?Etc!

Archive: 32 posts

Hey all!

I've just published my latest, a platformy puzzley stealth action type thing. I've tried to keep this one fairly simple, but with a wide range of gameplay ideas to keep it interesting. Feedback, criticism and suggestions always welcome.

It's just great and amazing that you still make your Star Wars levels. I rarely play LBP now but I check in here and que up levels once a week.2014-03-07 22:47:00

I love your series and have queued this.

I just realised today that my four year old son's first exposure to Star Wars is from playing the Angry Birds game. Am I a bad parent?

You should make your own cut of empire and remove the "I am your father" spoiler scene. Then he'll be mindblown when someone at school tells him "....no....VADER was his father".

I just played this, it was VERY fun and well done, I especially enjoyed it since I acidentally watched the movie in question the other day. My favourite bit was getting the lasor sword and finally getting to slice up those dudes I had been sneaking around til' now

I have some complaints though!

There were so many mechanics! I must admit I have not played earlier levels in the series (will get around to that!) so I might be missing out on some ability gaining and/or explanations. I just entered a level that straight up had double jumping, a boost, and a ground pound without any explanation at all. I for one really enjoyed these mechanics and they were all well done, but both the ground pound and the dash rarely got used. I didn't even know about the dash until I accidentally used it, and the ground pound was unknown to me til' like the last bit when I was trying to emote and accidentally brought up the control screen, hehe.
In a way it felt nice having these extra abilites in my pocket from a story perspective, I kinda felt like a proper jedi with a whole bunch of powers at my disposal, but not needing to use em all, that's how awesome of a jedi I am :b But I dunno..

Maybe the earlier levels are more focused on these other mechanics or maybe you just put them in for the lolz, it's just confusing to me to see such well executed moves not be integrated into the gameplay, hehe.

Oh, and I was also confused by the boss bit! Once I figured it out it felt more fun, but for like 5 minutes I thought one was supposed to lock the bossy in using the gate..considering it toally looked like a gate and that one used what looked like a switch that would stay in place to active it. Somehow telling the player that the gate is not really a gate and more of a timed killing device might be a good idea, I kept thinking I was not fast enough closing it which felt pretty frustrating.

But..yeah. This was fun and strange! Very lovely stuff

@Mnniska

Yeh, if you haven't played the previous ones I can imagine it feels a bit odd as I made the choice not to put in a tutorial with every new level. (I've just put in a modified 'Move List' hint at the beginning, maybe that'll clarify it a bit).

The other moves are utilised a lot more in some of the other levels, but it can kind of get to a point where if you present an obstacle to the player, there are so many options to try that it gets a bit overwhelming, so I wanted to simplify this one to a degree, and stick with just a couple of the abilities. You can use the Dash and it will probably help out on a few platforming bits, but its not compulsory for navigating through.

With the boss, the (intended) challenge just comes from working out how to kill him, as its pretty simple once you've worked it out, which is why I avoided any hints, just to keep it from being too easy, so I dunno about dropping a hint there.

Fun and strange : ) I'll go with that! - thanks a lot for all that feedback... And try the others if you get some time, Dagobah and Cloud City are the two that really make you use the full range of Jedi goodies...

Heh, better that than the Phantom Menace, eh.

I couldn't progress past the switch and donut box for ages because, although I did get the box over my sackboy, I didn't realise I was able to change layers like this. I assumed normal LBP rules would apply - you can't change layers inside a normal box (I guess you used some logic to make this happen). This caused me a lot of frustration!

Thanks for being patient with me and sending me messages. Still haven't finished because my meddling children expected breakfast and legally I was obliged to attend to them.

Soon! Soon...

oh noes! I had an issue. right after Jabba gets me and tosses me down to the beast, I never get there. I'm just stuck to what looks like a level link, falling and spinning, falling and spinning. It never ended. Loved what I saw so far though.2014-03-09 00:10:00

I saw you published this... tripped over a cat rushing to get my controller... hurriedly grabbed the LBP2 disc, threw it into the PS3... and realized I hadn't played anything for so long my controller was completely dead...

Plugged it in and sat staring at the screen until it charged....

Booted up LBP2 only to realize there were a WHOLE BUNCH of updates that had to be applied....

And finally....

Got me some Star Wars goodness!

I had absolutely no issues whatsoever beginning to end. Worked like a champ. As usual, I was really keen on seeing how your imagination would sort taking Return of the Jedi and bringing it to the LBP2 universe. And, as usual, I finished the level completely satisfied that you pulled it all off nicely.

Once again, great job - I'm looking forward to seeing this series complete so I can go back and play it from beginning to the end. How about we all fly out to your neck of the woods and have a great big party when you finish it?

@aratiatia - Thanks a lot for persevering and your comments in-game, did you manage to get past that bit eventually? It hadn't occurred to me that people might not quite get the box bit. You reckon it needs a different type of hint? I've also put it an modified hint about the pendulum in the shaft section after reading your message. Again, its one of those things you hope the player will just play around with and work out, but if you got stumped there, chances are others will too. Thanks for re-re-replaying.

@bio - Yep, that's the level link alright. Good to know some things never change. : / I intentionally kept Part Two a bit shorter/less thermo heavy hoping that might help but obviously that didn't work out. Bah!

@Cubb - Glad it all worked out for someone. The rate I'm going I think we'll probably be a bit grey and past partying by the time this ends, heh heh!

Amazing level. I really liked the sneaky gameplay and the challenging sections of the level was brilliant. I think that the section right near the very end of the level, where you have to wall jump 3 times while avoiding the donuts thrown at you was WAY to difficult. The fact that I could just barely reach the wall-jump plate, and I died like 20 times.

I did find one bug though. You can actually double-jump and fall down into the desert and go under the other sections of the level. This bug is located right above the bouncepad when you land on the "zeppelin" it's right before you reach the controllable cannon - When you land you can double jump to the platform above the bouncepad and down into the desert.

I hope that made sense...

Overall a fantastic level with a huge amount of replay value. I think I'm going to play again right nauw!!

@Jauw - Thanks, I think I found where you got out, I've sorted that now.

With the section you found really hard - did you pull over the big sack of donuts so you could get up to the first walljump plate? If you did, and still found it difficult I'll have a look at extending the wall jump range a bit....

Another reason to sit down and finally just play the entire series one after another, instead of a level here and a level there. Once the Star Wars DLC comes out, if it does, this series should earn you an Instant Awesome Sauce Pin!!!2014-03-10 22:49:00

No I completely missed that. Maybe I am just an idiot... But I can imagine that the section would have played out perfectly as all your other sections. lol I was wondering why a talented creator like you would make such an impossible* jump. I simply had NO idea I had to pull the sack of donuts over to get some height.

-- Jauw

*It was almost impossible, try making that jump without help from the sack of donuts. It took me ages!

I could always put in an 'R1' hint. I don't like seeing hints like that when I play other levels, so my instinct is to avoid putting them in, but my own design is probably too obtuse for its own good. I've added about three since it's been published.2014-03-10 23:35:00

Now that I got a new PS3, I'm back on LBP2 and the last three published levels you made are the first three LBP2 community levels (in forever) I had in mind to play. Part 2 and 3 of Cloud City levels are brilliant. Love the boss battle bits on both parts, and Darth Vader attacking me with such crazy obstacles as a bulldozer, LOL, on Part 3 is hilarious. A yay, heart, and positive review on both of them.

And now for this level. The entire visuals of the level, from the night desert to the Sail Barge, are terrific. And the platforming gameplay is top-notch. The sneaky part is really fun, even if it took me 15 minutes to get the second key. Even the Rancor and Boba Fett boss battles are creative. Also, great use of wall jumps.

OVERALL: A yay, heart, and positive review

Alright this is too annoying... Right after the intro cutscene with the Star Wars logo there is a specific music track that is played in almost every Star Wars level you have published. I have been searching for it for ages, and I can't find it in my music list. Could you please tell me which music piece you use?

If its the twinkly bit where it pans down through space, it's the last 10 seconds of the Davinci baroque piece.

Thanks to CogMonkey for the vid!
