Sky Town

Archive: 10 posts

Hey guys, my 3rd real level. try it out.

Sky Town has Sackboy running and jumping through (obviously) a town in the sky. Along the way, you will board a skyship and be attacked by the Dreadnaught. I personally think this is one of my best levels so far, so give it a shot!

I've listed it on my "to-play" things, I'll have some feedback within a week. Maybe today depending on the length of the killzone demo .2009-02-05 10:47:00

Pretty fun level. I liked the airship theme a lot, although I felt a few objects seemed out of place for the theme, such as the donut words and the construction guy. Other than that though, I really enjoyed your theme and the music fit perfectly.

As for gameplay, I felt that the platforming was pretty good, but I did run into a couple quirks. First, I was someone confused by the debris that you have to pull at the beginning. Was the debris, just the giant piece of dissolve material? Because I just ran over and pulled it and then ran past.

Another issue that I ran into concerned the escape pod. I was able to jump out of it and land outside your level. I wasn't able to complete it at the point that I jumped, but I'm guessing that if a player jumped out at a different time, they could probably just fall to the goal. That'd be a shame in my opinion, because I liked your escape pod, specifically it's destruction!

I'd also recommend hiding some of your switches. They stand out in a level such as yours. So, that's all I think you need really, just a little polish here and there and you'll have a nice level.

^Thanks

the debris was actually the square chunk of metal with the jetpack. You are supposed to pull it away with the jetpack on, so that the weight of your body, and not you grabbing it, pulls the metal. I guess I never realized that the dissolve material isn't attached to the ground.

and yes, after creating the level, I realized that I needed to have my escape pod in the front layer so that you can't jump out forward

thanks for the feedback

Played it, overall it was a fun, pretty level.

Pros:
- Looks great overall, good use of materials
- I like the "torn" rags objects being used in this way
- Loved the escape pod sequence especially:
- the cirle in circle in circle thing
- escape path elevated by rope and all that
- crushing the escape pod so the the player falls, unharmed, to the ground
- Funny originally designed characters

Cons:
- Here and there it lacked some polish, some weird angles left and right
- Visible switches, You really don't need the cues from them and they aren't pretty
- Usage of several story built things (construction guy springs to mind) that aren't that great and unoriginal by definition
- Depris pulling with the jetpack is fun but it isn't that clear that the metal block is supposed to be the debris
- The section with the moving block which has a jetpack on it is a bit unclear. I flew over the moving vertical beam and undid my jetpack, getting myself stuck. Might want to discourage that and make clear that up is the right way to go. (Preferably by blocking the way to the right.)
- I was quite underwhelmed by the dreadnought, there is hardly a suggestion that there is a humongous ship, bombing you to bits.
- Here and there you have some dark matter coming into view. You might want to put it a bit further away or hide it better.

Don't read too much in these comments, You've made a great level but it has some small issues which, if fixed, would add some polish and shine to your level.

Yes, every once in a while he'll rise from his throne and come out to meet with the common folk.

Would anyone like some tea and crumpets?

Ok, back on subject:

I agree with everything Wyth said, so I'm not going to write it all out again. Just a couple things to add:

+ I really liked this level from a standpoint of originality. It didn't seem to be "copying" anything.

+ I have to reiterate from Wyth - the circle-in-circle contraption was a lot of fun. Crushing it was actually one of the high points of your game. I would definately explore these kinds of creative moments in your future levels.

- With the jetpack near the beginning, my jetpack would not actually reach to the "block" (er.. debris). Had to exit the jetpack and pull it on foot, then walked around it.

- Where you are being bombed. When you are at the bottom it is unclear there is no floor because of the camera angle. I would either adjust the camera angle to look down a little or make the gas a little higher so you can see it.

- Artistic thing (kind of along with what Wyth was saying): Not really sure what was bombing me. Would have been cool to get near the top and see the bottom of whatever was bombing.

All in all, though, I think you've created a fun game here - nice job.

Now, if you get a chance to play "Splat Invaders Saga" you should. It's a lot of fun (and has been in the community spotlight for a few weeks). You don't necessarily need to give me feedback, but you may find it fun.

Thanks, I will be sure to keep all those things in mind when I create my next level.

My next level is going to be something that, I hope, will be very original. With Sky Town, I don't think I had too many original gameplay moments, although the theme is original. My next level will have very original gameplay ideas, and a nice visual twist

And, I have to give credit where credit is due. In a different level, there was a part where the vehicle you are in gets crushed. It's not exactly the same as mine, but it did inspire me.
