Level Length

Archive: 10 posts

I've been working on a level for several weeks- maybe two months- and was wondering what is considered a long vs short level?
My level is currently about 5 minutes now- not counting the short cutscenes- but I don't want it to feel as if it's dragging on for too long.

I'm also not really sure what is considered a long or a short level, and I think the answer is subjective. To give you my personnal thoughts, I usually don't care about level length. The things I do care about are fun and non repetitive gamplay sections. Make sure your level is enjoyable and the time it take to finish it won't matter.2014-03-02 10:34:00

I agree if the game play and visuals are good I can play awhile, if they are great I can play a day. If they are bad a minute feels like an hour. I do think the challenge is in longer levels, as the most awesome slurm stated, to steer clear of repetition. For me an unfolding story line helps2014-03-03 19:54:00

If your level has a nice story,a nice gameplay and maybe cool effects, than I agree
with Slurm and smartysloan...

I've played through it so many times that I don't even know if it's fun or not... constant testing...constant replays...constant edits...over and over- again and again.... I think it's time for another break. 2014-03-04 02:46:00

I'd say it's:

Short - up to 3 minutes
Medium - from 3 to 6 minutes
Long - from 6 minutes and above

But yeah, the lenght won't help when the level is boring.

Yeah.
I just played through some story levels and those were pretty long. Too long for me.
I'm just going to edit it, remove some bits here and there and make other bits easier- they weren't challenging but it's better safe than sorry.
All that's really left is the intro and ending.

If while testing, i can rush through the level in about 5 mins then im happy. The most important thing is keeping the gameplay tight with no repetition.I agree with what others have said too, if it starts to get boring then a 2 minute level will feel like a whole day.2014-03-06 19:17:00

In my opinion there's a <7 minute rule for me playing an online platformer however this rule is ignored if the level does something really unique and fun or if I'm reviewing a level (then I go through it all).2014-03-09 08:15:00

I understand. If I'm playing a level and it seems like it's never going to end then I tend to stop playing it mid-way.

My current level has a recurring gameplay element throughout the level but it's not an obnoxious one that should cause people to want to quit.
If I am capable of getting past it in the first- second- try than I'm sure other's will be able to as well.
That was a problem I had with my first level and something I've come across in other levels.
