PS4 sound issues

Archive: 1 post

Well I bought a PS4 yesterday, took it home, followed the setup instructions and connected it to my amplifier and TV.

All good! Except I can only get stereo sound through my optical cable - no surround at all.

My amp doesn't process audio via HDMI it just passes video through so I use an optical cable. That won't give me full uncompressed HD sound but it still sounds pretty good to me through the 5.1 set up! This works great with my PS3.

However, although the PS4 has options for choosing your priority output method and some more choices on linear PCM vs bitstream, no amount of fiddling makes a difference - it all comes out in plain stereo whether I make choices through the OS or while in a movie.

I even swapped my PS3 optical cable to see if that worked - same effect. Games and blurays are just bog standard stereo.

I think it's a software issue with the PS4 but I need to ring Sony and talk with someone about it.

Online forums are saturated with audio issues and no one seems to have nailed the optical method.

I'll post here again if I have any success.

Of course, I really just want LBP to come out on this new platform!

EDIT: success! Surround acquired. I had to tweak and setting on the amplifier (which I've never done) and now I have 5.1 surround. Phew! Bring on LBP for PS4!
