The good ol' days

Archive: 13 posts

This community is garbage. Little Big Planet is garbage. What the **** happened? I bought that game a week after it came out. I stayed loyal, pre-ordered lbp2 and was deep in addiction. The community was in the best shape of it's life right around ~the end of lbp1 and into lbp2. The community then quickly went to the depths of the terrible "cool levels" epidemic.

Long story short, eventually both games... lbp1 and lbp2 died. lbp2's inevitable death took longer and may still be in the final stages but it's dead. or almost dead.

I have not played lbp in years, the state of the community worsens with every visit I make...

Do you all remember those days when the levels on cool levels were actually something someone was proud of, something someone somewhere made with care and with fun in mind. I do, and as I said I have not played that game in a long long time, but it still gives me a tight knot in my stomach thinking on the time I spent and the friendships that truly meant something I made with my little sackboy. I don't own a ps3, nor play video games anymore but I will ALWAYS remember this game in it's prime, I will always keep my sackboy plushie and I will always keep both copies of the games on hand.

Debate this all you want but my solid blame lays on 2 things. Mm making the "copy" function so extensive and easy/ non-limited and you. the community, the majority of the community at least who did copy and paste levels to get those stupid amounts of plays and hearts.

From an ex-lbp fanatic. I miss you LBP - [10]

The Cool Pages always reeked so far as I know, and we've always had a bunch of spike-haired selfie-shooting members here. When something like LBP gives such an easy-to-use development toolkit and a simplistic way of publishing your creations, it's kind of to be expected that a lot of garbage ends up being created. The problems you listed don't seem new by any means, and if you search hard enough, you can still find a number of quality levels pumped out all of the time.2014-02-26 03:41:00

You don't even have to search hard. Just pop in the Level Showcase on here every now and then, and check out the Spotlight. Heart your favourite creators so you can see if they release a new level, log into lbp.me to see what your friends have enjoyed. Still tonnes of good levels out there.

Cool levels has always been a mess of copied spam levels - MM themselves referenced this in the MGS pack where the bad guy has built a machine to churn out endless copies of trophy levels, and that was in 2008. "Cool levels" is hidden away in the advanced search part of LBP2 these days so it's hardly relevant any more. There are amazing levels published every day and you don't have to go far to find them. Like Ali said, there's loads listed on this site and on many other LBP sites, and in the team picks list.

If you don't own a PS3 any more I don't really understand how you can comment on the state of the games

I don't see why they couldn't make copied levels ineligible for the cool levels.2014-02-26 16:09:00

Think of it from the perspective of a new player. As soon as they connect online, they see a big "lucky dip" button with all those horrible copied levels in it. If they try to dive in to meet other players, they're brought to a mortal kombat level or something. So naturally, they think those levels are the best LBP has to offer....and then they start playing/creating those levels. It's a never-ending cycle. As for those "spotlights", a lot of players seem to think lbpcentralhub created those levels, at least based on some of the reviews/comments...

Anyway... the vast majority of levels are so horrible I wouldn't touch them with a 20 foot pole. There are 8 million levels and I'm sure under 10,000 are actually playable/not copied...And what's sad is that most players don't care if a level is copied. I told some people the levels they played/hearted were copied.... their response was basically "I don't care if it's copied, it's fun so I hearted it".....

So in other words, LBP is barely clinging to life. There's a few specs of light in a barren wasteland full of copied spam levels...

To be honest, I don't see the purpose in this thread.

You say "This community is garbage."
This community is filled with talented creators and supportive people who love the game. Yes there are trolls however there are a large number of great people and levels if you take the time to look or use the resources provided by the fansites. Activity may be dying down but it is far from dead.

The issues of Cool levels and copying have been discussed to death over the last 5 years and these threads posters have received great advise from our members (like DV, Ali and Cog's above) and are locked since it just rehashes the same old things.

These issues are not going to go away but with the support of the fansites and it's loyal members, fantastic creations (and people) can still be found.

Since you no longer own a ps3, don't play video games and have not played LBP in years I have to wonder why you felt the need to post a thread like this.

This is a good point. Though there is the Team Picks, and the news feed which pops up which highlights the spotlights, so it's still fairly easy to find decent levels.

So, something does need to be done in the next game to ensure that good levels get more exposure. Perhaps some extra "integration" with the community forums. For example, on the main menu there could be a link to "Forum Hub" section... or whatever. Then each of the main forums will have their own section within there. Any levels posted on that forum would then be featured in that forum's page, in the game (a forum mod could have final say whether a level is allowed in, to prevent any exploitation). Anyway, it's just an idea.

Honestly though, when was the "Cool levels" list not broken? I don't remember such a time and I've been here for nearly 4 years now.

One thing I've never quite grasped about the complaints aimed at this game are the complaints about "Copy" system. They've been here for a dang long time, let's be clear, but they have always struck me as little odd. Seriously, what on earth is the issue? Is it so difficult to not make the level copyable and not let strangers you don't have a reason to trust wander around your moon? And other thing is the closeness of the community, as if we're now more divided than we were say 3 years ago. Should we no longer present ourselves as an open community? Should we no longer befriend those who we meet via the game and should we strive towards an idiot's utopia in search for the ultimate judgment-system that can be laid on those who we deem not worthy, shaping ourselves into a community of elitists that see themselves as the righteous players of these games while the rest of the players are mindless sheep put to play our levels and give us popularity? Because honey, I'm not gonna do that.

"Place your bets!"

The main problem, if there really is one is there is only one server. Anything and everything goes to the same place. It has been that way for the beginning of LBP. True there are filters you can apply to your searching to limit that list, but still no matter what, if the level matches that criteria, poof there it is. What you see is what you get. ..and considering how many levels are out there. Who knows!! lol

"My eyes! My eyes!"

There there... you have found what you consider a non serious creation by a youngster or something you find as garbage or even beneath your delicate taste in amazing levels! Oh noes!!!

The reality, which escapes those that seem to consistently make these threads, is who all plays LBP. There is the widest age range you can imagine both playing AND creating. There are no "suggested for age this thru this" tags... even though I suggested that quite a few times. lol If someone can figure out how to plop a bit of sponge or even some bubbles in a level and hit the publish button and figure out the rest of the needed 'click this push that' sequences and so long as it doesn't disrupt the EULA, it is a level out there for anyone to try. No matter who made it, no matter what age they are, no matter their talent level or their personal seriousness to that creation. It is out there. It is ALL out there.

"..but I iz so very serious!"

Yes indeed.. aren't we all. We seriously have no idea why there are those that continue to complain about a known fact and why it keeps surprising folks. We aren't surprised at how much junk is on tv and those people are attempting to make money!! This isn't! There really isn't any reason it should be a surprise at all at the content on the servers. In fact most of why all of us are here at LBPC are these same reasons.

Using our tools here on LBPC, you can promote your levels, get amazing feedback, improve your skills, get incredible help and even get some well deserved recognition for your efforts via our Level Showcase and F4F system.

If you are a player, take advantage of the Spotlights, the Level Showcase and LBP.me. Follow your friends, your hearted creators, those gifted phenoms and see what they are playing. If they give it a thumbs up or especially a Heart, then it must be something to check out! Do it!! Do it now!!!

Yes we know there are also copiers, spammers, those that plagiarize, those just trying to get hearts, those trying to get plays. So? They don't count here. It just won't work. The only way you can climb to the top and get a level Spotlighted is to EARN IT.

So please stop telling us what we already know and take advantage of what we are.

"However, on further review..."

If the OP doesn't play, create, have a PS3, or even played LBP for quite a long time, I seriously have no idea the relevance of this thread in the first place. Therefore, I will wave my hand and do what I feel is the correct thing in this case and lock the thread. I feel the OP just wants some attention and this thread is irrelevant, besides already being discussed to death for many years in many other threads.
