Naming rules

Archive: 13 posts

Hey guys,

I never know what to name my level. I'm not asking for ideas. Whenever I think of a name for my level, it always boils down to 2 options: a cool-sounding, original name that doesn't really describe the level (Thin of Ygdrassil) or a boring, bland name that describes the level very well. I never know which to go with. Which one do you usually go with, and why?

That's funny because Yggdrasil does describe the level.

Yggdrasil = tree of life.

I prefer to give my levels 1 word names. They're easy to remember and usually sound cool.

Can't you just use Little Big ____ or make a play on the word "sack" like everybody else? 2009-02-02 02:12:00

There are two problems with this. Because everyone else is doing it, it can make the level very hard to find. If people can't remember your PSN, or get that bit wrong, it will likely be near impossible to find the right level.

The second is similar. Because everyone else is naming their levels like this, it makes your level not stand out at all. It might have been cute and original when the game first came out, but tying in with that naming theme just makes the author sound lazy to me.

I know not everyone is like that, but you don't "have" to follow the crowd. A cool level name which does not involve "little big" or "sack" can actually result in more plays, just like a unique icon for your level can make it stand out more.

I'm a firm believer in K.I.S.S. - and I don't mean the band (although they were pretty cool back in the 70's before they released that disco album and really scared everyone by taking their makeup off. Hotter Than Hell was the first album I ever....) erhm... sorry, where was I?

Oh... right. I think it's great when someone can come up with a name that contains some connection to the level, and is at least recognizable by the time you hit the score board. On the other hand, it doesn't always make a difference for a lot of people as they just end up playing 4 and 5 star (4 is the new 3) levels without even giving the others a chance. I play a ton of Asian levels without knowing what the heck they are called or what the story line is about, because I still haven't recieved my universal translator in the mail... and until I do, I will just trust that the person put some effort into it so I owe it to them and myself to find out.

The title of the level is certainly not the "be all and end all" but it can have an affect on people's willingess to play to some degree. I've learned the hard way that a cool sounding level name is often not even remotely reflective of the content inside... in fact it's often the exact opposite.

I recently changed the name of my level called Rustbukkit's Studio from Rustbukkit's Photography Studio... simply based on the fact that just prior to publishing I thought maybe I should see if anyone else had done anything similar. To my surprise, they had and the results were such that I wanted the title of my level to be as far removed from the word PHOTO as possible. However, I didn't feel the need to add anything spiffy to the name to try and jazz it up at all, because I'd rather that the content and quality of time and work I put into it speak for itself.

So in all, I don't think the title of your level is as important as what's inside.... just like people. Just to prove it, I'm going to name my next level "Miss Nibblebits Fiery Toaster Ride" and see how many hits I get on that.

Cheers!

I go quite a lot by the name of the level, shallow individual that I am lol. I tend not to open Unnamed Level, pretty odd that people go to the trouble of making a level & can't think anything at all to call it - anything is better than nothing, surely? LittleBig...... is a bit tiresome but still better than nothing! Saw one the other night called 'Don't play Me, Don't Heart Me!' or something .... I probably didn't heart it but I definitely opened it, just to have a nose 2009-02-02 10:30:00

You know, this has got me thinking. I should rename my wizard level. Maybe give the wizard a name.

Saw one the other night called 'Don't play Me, Don't Heart Me!'
THAT is one of the best possible names ever. I'm not even kidding. What with reverse psychology and all, that level must get a lot of plays.

Ha, that's what I thought - even if it was complete tripe, everyone will succumb to curiosity won't they?! But I can't actually remember whether it was any good or not .... I'll have a look later & see how many plays/hearts.2009-02-02 12:40:00

The don't play and don't heart me level is actually really good, even if its a little short and unchallenging. It got a heart from me, just because the hilarious theme and name.
And i agree that that name is probably one of the best ones out there and like you said, it does get a lot of plays and a lot of hearts, so level names have a big influence on if people notice the level. At least if they are very original.
I would stick with a mix of both cool and descriptive name, if you can't think of any name thats both then you could put the describing name after the cool one, like a sub title.

Yggdrasil: the climb of the great tree, as an example.

BTW, did YOU do the Yggdrasil level!?!?! the one on the front page of the highest rated pages!?!
If so i thank you a lot! I got really inspired while playing that level and i'm now working on a forest level myself!

I usually rhyme/alliterate my level names(Savage Skies, Tricky Towers, Fearsome Facility, Pyroclastic Prison). It's a fun trick, fairly unique to me. So I'd advise you find a common pattern for your level names to make them more recognizable.2009-02-02 20:34:00

LOL. I wish I had made Ygdrassil. None of my levels break 15 plays. It was just the first level that I thought of

Oh, well better luck next time.
Have you read the guide for how to get more plays on your levels? It could be really useful.
I personally have 100 plays on my level which i've obtained through always republishing the level when i log in. It's a great tip if you didn't know about it.

I'm terrible at names, I've delayed the publishing of my first level because I couldn't figure out a decent name... I finally decided on a series and thus a naming scheme (sig). I really like the name(s) I've got now, but it does limit me to a series (at least for these names).

The Don't play Don't heart name is offcourse great, if I came across it I would burn with curiousity and play it . A good name would make someone curious and support the premise of the level.
