Dungeon day (Old style Dungeon Crawler) [Spotlighted !]

Archive: 22 posts

Hello Everybody,

It's Dungeon Day !
It's time to explore an old, huge, dark dungeon, defeat the Boss and get the treasure.
Try to find some weapons to help you (knives and bombs), and use different keys to open closed doors.
In french, we call that a "Porte-Monstre-Tr?sor" ("Door-Monster-treasure"), but I don't know if it's used in English.

Have fun !

wow! This was truly epic. masterfully done. I loved everything about this. The design is very well done and I loved the whole key system. Gameplay was good and I loved those little touches like the use of the bomb. Excellent work.

Awesome level, congrats on the spotlight (I'll have a video of the level up on Friday)! Great fun exploring the dungeon and fighting the monsters, and it looks really good too. My first playthrough took a while because I was trying to work out what to do but I got a nice sense of accomplishment whenever I found a key or blasted my way through a wall. Some nice little platforming sections thrown in too

Would love to see a sequel!

Don't really know what to say to be honest. It looks very good, music is a good fit and the design is unique rather in execution than in concept, but I feel like there should've been more enemies. That's kind of everything I have to say, the level is awesome and definitely deserves its spotlight. I couldn't finish the level, but I suppose I was near the end when my journey ended due to surprise power-cut in our neighbourhood.2014-03-06 21:54:00

Hello Freeaim,
I'm agree with you. I would have wanted to put more enemies, but I could'nt, due to the thermo and the level design (too much "restrictive" I think).
I'm working on a sequel, and there will be more ! Thanks for your advices !

Hello CogMonkey !

Hi man, lemme start by saying how much I enjoyed the level. The backtracking felt very nice to me and unlocking new areas with new abilities was pretty fun, so well done on that
I also enjoyed the atmosphere very much, everything from music to visuals were telling me that this was indeed a dungeon adventure of excellent quality.

Stuff to consider/fix;

* Would've been fun with a short intro cinematic to set the mood. Get the player in the dungeon crawler hype! Not super important but something I daydreamed about whilst playing.

* The camera needs to be fixed. Right now it's 100% fixed on the player and follows every move one does. Why is this? I'm guessing you are using a hologram which follows the player at all times and have simply put a camera on said hologram that is set to 0% player tracking. Please fix this! It really takes away from the level.

* At later parts in the lvl I experienced some heavy lows in the frame rate. Made it less adventure-y and more annoying for me. I'm guessing the combination of lots of lights + materials caused this..mostly the lights though.

* Now for some player communication. I was somewhat confused as to what was grabbable and what was not. Pretty much everything except for the switches themselves are made of stone in this level, even grabbable stuff! Perhaps letting grabbable stuff be a different color or material that actually looks like it's grabbable is a solid idea? At this stage I kept getting stuck because I didn't realize that one stone was grabbable!

* I also thought a couple of checkpoints were a bit frustating. Especially battling multiple enemies and dying instantly, having to run up to them again only to die a second time was harsh.

* This might not be too relevant for this level but might be interesting for future installments of the dungeon day series. What if you used abilities one gained to deny access purely without keys? You did this partly with bombs but most of the level progression was controlled by keys. I feel keys work for what you wanted to do but they also feel kinda cheap, compared to gaining and using a new ability to ones advantage.
What if you do backtracking purely by letting players gain new abilities?

Maybe there's a high ledge earlier on in the level, but then you learn how to like..jump higher! Boom, new area discovered without keys.
This would, I'm guessing, feel more dynamic compared to simply collecting a bunch of different colored keys, heh.

Very nice level, looking forward to the sequel!

Hello Mniska I'm french, so sorry for my very bad english...I hope you will understand me)
Well...First, thanks for taking time to play Dungeon Day and writing this long long post. I'm glad that a creator like you playing my level and spend time to write to me (I LOVE your awesome "speedcreate" on Youtube !)

* intro cinematic : yes, perhaps I should do it, but the thermo was already full. try to do it in a separate level, why not.
* Camera : Yes, I used an invisible hologram wich follows the player everywhere. I like this camera angle, that's why I do this. In my opinion, a fixed-body camera (0%) lokks like an old school game. Why do you think that take away from the level ?
* frame rate : yes, it happends when several torch are activated. a true problem, even if the lights are connected on a player proximity detector
* grabbable material : yes, it's intentional. I like the player explore by himself.
* chekpoints : yes, you're right. Some of them are on a wrong place. I will try to improved it.
* I'm totally agree with you. I will try to do better for the second level. Make keys and doors is easier than finding new abilities...

thank you very very much for all this precious advices ! I'm glad that you enjoyed playng Dungeon Day !

Really enjoyed this, especially the backtracking with new abilities, some good level design there. Its the sort of level where you want to feel a bit lost but not to the point of confusion, and you got that right, cool stuff.2014-03-08 13:00:00
