Open World Game ( Project THE NEXT BIG THING ON LBP)

Archive: 11 posts

Hello there. Whilst I was working on my small Assassins Creed 4 project (please check it out please) I really wanted to create something big. A game which could play out like an open world title in which you could visit various locations, meet various characters and undergo small missions. I want it to be a long adventure where you can explore a vast world, hang out at locations and complete various tasks. I know it sounds like a big ask for such a small creator, but if the task could be completed, this game could be a great success.

I really would lie the game to play out in Middle Earth times (not based on LoTR) where your a great hero who has been summoned to a kingdom in trouble. There could be a opening mission which explains the characters background and introduce the Ames story. From there there could b 5 levels which can be accessed. Each could be individually level linked so you could almost go back and forth between them. The game could incorporate a Vast town, with taverns and other sights, as well as some woodland with some monsters to fight. I do have a problem however. I am pants at managing my theometer so I worry that it may fill up quicker then it could. Any suggestions.

As for the character, he could be custom designed to your taste and you'll control him through a sackbot. This means you could use sword and projectile attacks on any enemy's in the game. There also could be.several small missions like helping out townfolk, slaying monsters etc. I also would like to incorporate horses and boats into the game.

Finally, the game will use a day and night cycle to add some realism to the world. So what do you think so far. It's an ambitious project which I could do with some asstiance with. Perhaps someone would be willing to assist in level design or helping with logic. I'm all right with coming up with a story but maybe someone would maybe like to assist with making mini games, logic or music. Also I do not own the memoriser but I'll look into purchasing it soon.

The open world game doesn't have to be set in Middle Earth days either. How about a modern open world game which incorporates Cars, phones and flying. This could be a really cool game and be the next big thing on Lbp. So I really need your thoughts, suggestions and comments. Want to help, get on board and msg me on PsN. Have any suggestions, comment in. If you have some useful logic then I would appreciate you post it here and share your inputs with the LbpCentral community. I really want this to be community project where everyone is involved.

P.S Anyone who contibutes to the project in whatever way will be mentioned in the game. Km if your reading this then thank you for all the fun Lbp has brought and I hope you may contribute.

For a level that big, don't bother with level links. You will need to emit/demit all the maps and other things you encounter in your game.2014-02-08 14:32:00

I would have a few level like in it. I some Emit/Demit in sections ech level has its sections. That way its not to much logic with the whole emitting thing. Emit/Demit is tuff for me so thats how I would do it. 2014-02-08 22:13:00

Thanks for that, But won't the level overheat as it de-emits and emits stuff?

EDIT:

Thank you, what's your thoughts on the setting. Do you think it will work?

Hes what I do to prevent overheating.
Add a transition (preferable a Pitch black screen or a loading Screen. Then De-emit First then have it set to once its gone 0.1 seconds after it emits thee new sections. this way its not doing both at once thus reducing the amount of wort the game has to put out to keep the thermo lowered

What kind of stuff have you already made so far? The ideas are pretty nice, I hope you can stay dedicated to the level, it sounds like a fun level so far.2014-02-11 23:34:00

Its very mixed, i've had a go at some Zelda, Mario and several other stuff. At the moment I'm still working on Assassins Creed IV and my MGS Game (which I revealed here last year). This project will be the most ambitious yet though.

EDIT:

I have experience with the Day and Night cycles and I'm good at managing Sackbot logic.

Interesting... I too, have been working on a long-term 3D styled level. I created a game camera positioned on a block of wood that can be controlled. The block of wood was supposed to be the place holder for when i advanced in the project- to develop the character and hologram animations. I wanted to add a rotate camera feauture which i had trouble with. But i did develop a jump mechanic. Note: I started this project before the MM picked 3d level. The jump worked with the X button output attached to the input of a timer and layer-material mover. So when you pressed X: the timer started and "elevated" the block(moved it a layer forward) then when the timer ended- it went back down. Not to brag, but the time the character stood in jump position was less than in the MM picked 3d level, me wanting to perfect the jump to seem more natural and responsive-less floaty.

After that, I kind of abandoned the project... But i still have the levels, objects of this project. I was also planning on the de mit/emit technique but didnt know how to use it. However, the de mit/emit thing could work like how once you die- a checkpoint could be triggered to a different section. Or the de mit/ emit thing could work like a render distance; rendering sections at a time to overcome thermometer overflow, working like a game engine. Although, all sections exist- one is rendered depending on your position, or near a player activating thingy... Sorrh forgot what it was called. Ultimately i think it can be done and like the idea of it- this would be grand. You would still probably have to seperate it into linked levels but its awesome! I want in. if anything i said is unclear i can explain it throughly..

Update 24.2.2014

Work is yet to begin on my open world project as I am still figuring out what the gameplay and story will be like. How would you fill about an open world Assassins Creed 4 game instead though. It could have top down boat navigation and give you the ability to explore small islands. The bigger towns could have there own levels though. If so I will merge this thread with my previous Assassins Creed 4 one.

Hi TheFutureMan.
Love the idea. An RPG is a big project whatever way you approach it. I'd actually go with the fantasy medieval style play
This way you can give yourself more variety in creatures and monsters. JMO.
For a way to pull it off, you could work on a world map system. When the level begins you spawn in a small town or house, this location could be the tutorial to learn controls etc, but would finish with you acquiring a world map,
At this point, you can have a number of locations on the map (towns, caves etc.) selecting one of these would emit that area, selecting a new location would de-emit that location, and emit the new one..
This same logic could also work for quests etc. Be happy to help out if you need any

One question: will it be a top down 3D pseudo-like level or 2D. If 2D, this project can be a lot bigger.

Anyway, if youre interested, i have progressed substantially in my top down pseudo 3D controllable character. I revisited the project. For convenience purposes ill refer to this project as "3LC9" from now on.
