Share Your Level Concept Art!

Archive: 28 posts

Hey guys!

I'm sure i'm not the only one in the LBP community, that plans his level before creating them. I actually have a whole book for the concept arts for my levels. (It is really helpful)
So what i do is, i sketch my level and visuals, so it is easier to create it, and i don't have those "i don't know what to do next" moments. I also draw some Objects and even a few costumes for LBP, that i will use in my levels.

This is the point of this threat. Make a picture of some concept art you drew and if you want you can also show how it turned out in LBP.

Here's my concept art for the Atlantys, an important spaceship in my horror series "2100" (http://lbp.me/v/95b78d):

And here is how it turned out:

Yeah, drawing stuff helps a lot. It's way easier to make something from a reference than doing it blind.

I have some concept art from Adalene, which was an isometric game I was working on in LBP. It's about a French resistance fighter in WWII.

I write pages upon pages of notes for my levels. Gets really messy. I tend to write down things I need to add/amend as I'm working through my level, so that I can make the changes at a later point.
I also draw rough doodles of how I want my level to look (well, I did with my last one). To call these doodles "concept art" would be a massive stretch, and to share them on here would bring huge amounts of shame to myself and my family.

Hahaha! I didn't imagine you as a "drawing skills" person either

Ooh nice thread idea! I definitely have a lot of concept art, not sure if I can upload them, as they're way too high quality (DSLR) I might try with my phone or something similar

I would show some concept art. But most of it I do on paper and I don't have a scanner so.... I don't have much I can show. But here's little something I did on PC. *mew

I still need to work on my Girblast badnik design a bit more later.

PS: Before you get confused. I only turned 2 of the 4 concepts into LBP models. The other 2 LBP models that are not from the art are normal Sonic badniks that I made based after official art.

I do that too, you know, i'm not really too great at remembering things, so when i find something to improve when i test my levels, i usually forget it again when i'm back in create mode. Then i play it again, and i remember it, just to forget it again when i finished the level..

That's why i just note everything i find, it's really helpful!

Dapiek (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/member.php?9476-Dapiek-Absaroka)is the concept artist for our upcoming RPG coming in March! Which of course helped out immensely:

http://img841.imageshack.us/img841/2791/dreamcatcherd.jpg

Most of the monsters came out like thier concepts, which was really cool:

Compliments to the Waagster

I didnt realize he would make the concepts so detailed until he joined the group. We have been in the dark for years, and this is little things we discussed. He even left notes on constructing these monsters in LBP2. It wasnt until last year that he finished a couple due to our team unfortunately growing up and disbanding a little.

Best part is, I didnt have to draw any of it! Luv having a dev team

I will ask Dapiek if he wants to create his own thread once our game releases to show off his artwork. He has a lot of cool things to show. He'd probably wouldnt want me showing any more though!

I'm not much of an artist so I usually just doodle random gameplay ideas on scrap paper. Usually I just work out artstyles (etc...) in game, but here is a rough sketch of a level I wanted to make.

Edit: better quality, plus some others.

Mine tend to be complete scrawl, to the point where even I struggle to read them myself! And sometimes there's the odd bit of foul language, so I wouldn't get away with posting them here.

There's nothing more professional in level design than being able to spot your own flaws.

Still, no matter how many notes you scribble down, there's always something that you miss! Which is annoying enough on a standard LBP level, but on a level that involves 30 stages it's enough to drive you insane!2014-01-30 16:29:00

These look really nice! They look more like actual drawings than plans to me, the ones by Ayneh too. I tend to draw the level in 2D from the side perspective, like a rough version of the final LBP level. I even draw some wiring from for example a switch to a light, so i know how the gameplay will work. No advanced logic, just some gameplay technical stuff.

Well I will try to keep this alive. More from Chrono Chrysalis. I forgot, we actually did some ship designs as well

Dapiek once again doodled this.

And one of my pals Waaaghgork made in in LBP. Considering the creator that designed this was around 12 years old at the time, I think it came out great.

Isn't it inconvenient that the designer drew something "impossible" in LBP? When i look at the sketch, he wanted the front of the ship to have a curvature, but since you are limited to the three layers (And of course some sneaky tricks with decos) you had to make the front angular.

I generally plan stuff that is easily recreatable in LBP.

I didnt model this one in LBP, but yea those curvatures would be hard to pull off. Unlike the monsters that had design plans, these airships were just doodles, so there were no concrete plans and didnt come out as accurate.

We were trying to figure out what ship design we wanted the characters to travel with and this is actually the first one. The others are really bizzare. I may have to consult some LBP engineers to create them.

I rarely use much actual material to make my enemies or my more complex objects. I use a lot of the unique shaped objects. deco. tools. glitches and anything that can give different shapes to make my work.

Unless it's a flat 2D style level, I otherwise find the flat look when everything is just solely made with material to be very unappealing, So I try to find as many work around as possible. *mew

Nice thread! I usually sketch most things up before making it in LBP, although I've found making stuff wiht a pen is vastly different from making it using cardboard, bolts, stickers and glue. As a result gameplay planning and level design seems to be easier to plan on paer while scenery always bounces all around the place for me

Silly gameplay sketches used in Help Youself;

Silly intro/scenery sketch used in Help Yourself;

Scenery plans from Help Youself at a time when I thought the level would focus more on depressed/weird fishes;

Silly very rough scenery ideas kind of not really used in Help Youself;

As you can see I'm not much of a detailed drawer when it comes to LBP planning sketches

These are some drawings I pulled together for the LBPCC Buddy Building Competition.
Unfortunately I only had access to LBPVita at the time and they did not accept Vita entries, still I felt like I should do something anyway so I drew these.

You had an AI bird companion that had certain abilities depending on the "feather" or chip inserted into the wing slots of the bird.
With all the feathers gathered you would have been able to find a way out to the surface world.

This! This is pretty much exactly how i plan my levels, drawing them 2D in "front view" if you could say that. I'll make sure i'll upload some more footage, but the problem is, my sketchbook has lines, they might be a bit distracting..

I like drawing out my lil' gameplay motifs in order to get an overview before doing any actual planning. Here's how that looks, kinda messy and confusing but very helpful for me!

Also, not sure if this qualifies as concept art, heh.

It honestly doesn't matter whether it counts as concept art or not, i still find it very interesting to get a "behind the scenes" look at your guys levels!
