The Cardboard Boy

Archive: 14 posts

Hello LBPC!

I want you to present my new level: The Cardboard Boy

NOTE: Don't worry I'm not that fast creator, this project started way back in 2012 when I was fooling around with my sackbot. However my lack of logic skills pushed this project into the dust, and there it was a quite time. I was working around it now and then, until I got enough ideas and inspiration to finnish this. So here it is.

Story: You are The Cardboard Boy, but not any ordinary Cardboard Boy, you have a special super power to able move objects, makeing paths and slow down the time. This time I even made a little story here, cause the atmopsphere is what it is, I wanted to explain to players what is going on.

Hope you enjoy

Please let me know any bugs: Cause of the logic and thermo blew up, there might happent some weird stuff, I used destroyers and emitters to make a level as full as possible, but I noticed that sometimes some objects may dissapear. Also this level is only for 1 player, other sackpersons have to sit and watch and it also might cause a bad lag.

Hey there, OmieR! I loved "Abandoned Wonderland," and since I haven't really reviewed any levels in a while, I decided I'd give this one a shot. Although like my other reviews, it might drag on some since I typically enjoy reviewing/talking about the level as I play it. Anyway, here goes!

The screen starts out black with a large crash, complemented by numerous beeping sounds that manage to heighten the tension greatly, and I've only just entered this level. After a few seconds, the menu lights up with some more beeping and some other sounds, as if the level itself had just been "turned on." So, just like the last level of yours I played, the sounds already works very well with what's going on. As the beeping continues, what sounds like motions of vehicles can be heard in the background. The sounds heard when you look through the menu are solid too, and I really like how the menu is all laid out very simply. Instead of something overly detailed and cluttered with options, it's basic and to the point, and works well with the sudden sense of intrigue and mystery that I feel as the player. Other features of the menu that help with this feeling are the glowing white background, animated number sequence, and scratched up font. So to put it simply, what you're doing is working very nicely.

Even darker mechanical sounds pulsate across the level screen as I chose to enter this inexplicably eery setting, and your choice of killing the player off in order to take them to the start of the level itself is, in my opinion, a very smart one. Why? Because the scratched up, robotic sounds synchronize perfectly with the vibrations of my controller that were caused by my death at the menu screen. This results in an interesting touch to the level that goes beyond the television screen, and this is coming from someone who will complain when creators sometimes decide to kill off players to teleport them somewhere in a needless way. Okay, I'm focusing too much on the details here, sorry. Moving onward!

Creepy yet great sounds aside, I move on to the level, where I meet a creepy thingamajig known as "The Evil Cube." Nice little fella, all things considered with the name. Splattered with monster/mechanical decorations that fit with the level and a preference of cleanly-cut text boxes. The cube world itself is very pretty. The futuristic tune played fits well and the addition of background cube-based structures appearing right out of the foggy lighting of the level. Triangles spin, clocks tick, and random little balls move in an organized fashion. Yes, this world is quite alive with its wonky, rotating parts, and the little tips that pop up at the bottom of the screen are helpful and stay up as long as needed.

The special mode Cardboard Boy goes into allows for some nice, unique gameplay that allows the simplistic, cube based world to stand out more. Things start out easy with basic jumping but it doesn't keep the training wheels on for long at all. I like how movement itself is slowed down as well, and the way in which it was slowed down allowed for the wall jumping to be performed very easily. There's no way to get out of the special power mode except by waiting for it to end, but since the mode itself only lasts ten seconds, I can't really complain. I also like how parts of the environment change when you switch to your special mode, like how the red cubes turn to a sort of beige color. Speaking of the red blocks, man was that third challenge tough at first! It felt sort of like a difficulty spike, but I can't be sure since you do need to time it right and your jumps do take you very far when time slows down. Thankfully, the infinite lives allowed for lots of experimenting, which can work very well with certain levels. So yeah, I guess it's not too much of a spike since as you climb up, your jumps can take you quite far. Trust me, I love my difficult levels, so I don't want to say you should make the level "softer," I'm just making a note of that.

Going forward, the red blocks appear again and again, and the challenges keep on coming. Vertically moving platforms, spinny circles, etc. Additional platforms to stand and wall jump off of emit nice and cleanly into the scenery. Unfortunately, I can't really say more in this review as I couldn't get past a certain challenge which I'd show a picture of, but the picture is broken, so I'll just say it's right after the spinny thing, where you wall jump off the black platforms going up.

Again, I don't like to complain about difficulty, so I am curious if there's just something to it I'm just missing. Since the level's main mechanic is slowing down time though, why do these black, moving platforms not slow down? Anyway though, here's a much shorter version.

TL;DR..

Pros:
1. Eery setting, with greatly fitting sound effects and music
2. Nice gameplay mechanic with some fun features like wall jumping and nasty red hazards
3. Cube-like world fits well as you move about, as do the background structures

Cons:
1. I don't know, early difficulty spike at the end of my playthrough maybe?
2. Aside from a brief scene with some windows that might be peering into a workshop, the level never felt like it fit its own title.

So yeah, basically it's a fantastic level, and I wish I could have finished it. I'll make sure to give it another go later, but I'm already enamored by the design and use of sounds, plus the Cardboard Boy's game mechanic worked very nicely, even though the difficulty was amped up rather quickly after I got going.

EDIT: Wait a minute... I might know how to do that challenge I was stuck on... fweiubveyfhvdefiudhrf (Forget the difficulty spike complaint then)

Wow @Dragonvarsity thank you for such and detailed review, much appriciated

About those vertically moving blocks, its because my lack of logic skill wont allow to move them slowly as well

Unfortunately yes, I see know that this level might be a little hard for some people. Usually I make really easy just simple jump and grab levels. This was easier at frist, but unfortunately "The Evil Cube" said that I should help him and make it a little bit harder, so thats why I added more of those killing red cubes.

I maybe add some more tips, but that part where black cube blocks are going up, its basically just an ordinary wall jump gameplay up, and using special skill makes it very easy.

Thanks for your review again
