Portraying Smoking in Lbp Levels
Archive: 12 posts
I actually wrote a topic similar a couple years back, but it hasn't quite been answered and I kinda need some opinions on this. I never published a level, so I am not sure what can get moderated. I wrote a character-who is a bit on the mature side. She is modeled after a certain part of American society and often pulls out a cigarette to smoke out of habit. It is in no way involved in the storyline and is pretty much just a ritual( if anyone has taken a literature class). I guess its kinda similar to Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid 4. Would a level get moderated for something like that, or does it depend on how it is portrayed? I'd really like the opionion of some of the moderators as well. Thanks in advance | 2014-01-19 07:38:00 Author: Rpg Maker Posts: 877 |
I've never seen any team picked levels with smoking in them. But Kelinteastwood has a team pick and his avatar has smoking in it...(and his team picked level is about shooting people with a high-powered rifle....) so I don't see why you can't get away with it if it's a minor thing.... http://lbp.me/u/KelintEastwood But I could be wrong. | 2014-01-19 12:47:00 Author: AmazingKittyCat Posts: 204 |
I've seen lots of levels that had a character smoking a cigarette, a cigar and even tossing back a "cold one" and none of those were moderated. Probably as long as there is no message that is like "hey kids, smoking is cool" Although, now that makes me think to make a joke about that. Have a character smoking and he says, "hey kids, smoking is cool." and then he starts coughing really bad and a lung comes out. | 2014-01-19 14:01:00 Author: biorogue Posts: 8424 |

I kind of feel a bit too unknown to really count on being team picked. But I really wanted to double check that I wouldn't get modded for something like this after all the work I have done. | 2014-01-19 15:14:00 Author: Rpg Maker Posts: 877 |
Well we once had a contest winner with an advert for cigarettes in the background of a level, cause it matched the theme nicely, and it couldn't be chosen by the developers publically until it was removed cause they can't be seen to promote these things considering the games age rating. | 2014-01-19 15:20:00 Author: ForgottenEnigma Posts: 1414 |

I think this is a good example. One difference is that my level defiantly does not use it as a glaring theme like that, but it does convey an appropriate mood some moments. You work with the contest crew, so lets say hypothetically my level was good enough to attract the devs attention. Do you think I could just create it and then if it gets flagged, I could just remove it and still be eligible for a pick? | 2014-01-20 01:31:00 Author: Rpg Maker Posts: 877 |
Just remembering you're entering this level in a contest. People will do anything to win, including trying to report the other entries for any little thing possible. I remember that happening with some of the previous contests. Some levels were mysteriously "deleted" and some contestants were banned. | 2014-01-20 03:24:00 Author: AmazingKittyCat Posts: 204 |
One difference is that my level defiantly does not use it as a glaring theme like that The thing is that it wasn't glaring in the slightest, many of us didn't even notice it until the Mm pointed it out and asked us to contact the creator to remove it. The only reason they asked us was so they could expose the contest winner, if it was a normal level I'd suspect they would play it safe and simply not pick it. Although the only one who really knows is StevenI | 2014-01-20 15:29:00 Author: ForgottenEnigma Posts: 1414 |

Although the only one who really knows is StevenI Yea it seems like an even split on opinions..sorta like last time. One thing I did find was this costume in lbp vita. http://static2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20121005235202/littlebigplanet/images/thumb/3/38/300px-Sean_Brawn.png/180px-300px-Sean_Brawn.png I did notice you mentioned MM, who are no longer the developers from my understanding. Perhaps Tasier is less lenient? Worst case scenario, removing it wont ruin the story..but the character is a bit different when removing this habit. | 2014-01-21 00:53:00 Author: Rpg Maker Posts: 877 |

I suppose corn cob pipes are seen differently from cigarettes… Not a lot of high school kids hide in the bathroom smoking corn cob pipes between classes. Portrayal of smoking is a finicky topic in LBP, I've talked very briefly about it with StevenI (in regards to contest entries). What's allowable in levels that are team picked has changed over time, for instance copyright used to be less of an issue. Presently, a level portraying cigarette smoking will not be team picked or officially promoted in any way. I can't say for sure about moderation, my guess is that someone's more likely to complain about a character who smokes repeatedly than if it were just once or twice. If you really don't want to risk moderation, maybe you could find another habit that would help define that character. | 2014-01-21 19:10:00 Author: Pookachoo Posts: 838 |

Its kinda sad that levels where you snipe people in the face is more tolerable than the mere image smoking. But moderation is also another element of design , so I will remove the habit.
