http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/01/07/sony-reveals-its-streaming-service-playstation-now The cloud based, Netflix-esque streaming service for the PS4, Vita, and, well, almost anything. Huh. confirmed to be able to stream PS3 games such as Last of Us, Beyond Two Souls, God of War:Ascension and Puppeteer. It will also allow trophy and online multiplayer support. Beta coming this month, and full service this summer. There's a subscription fee, but yeah. So... thoughts on this? | 2014-01-07 18:50:00 Author: RockSauron Posts: 10882 |
So glad they decided not to use the Gaikai name. | 2014-01-07 18:55:00 Author: Rabid-Coot Posts: 6728 |
They mentioned in the keynote that it was powered by Gaikai, so the name is still around. This is just a bit more consumer friendly. Anyway, it all depends on the pricing and the advances in future bandwidth limits. | 2014-01-07 19:22:00 Author: ForgottenEnigma Posts: 1414 |
The article also says, Players can also opt not to subscribe and rent games on a by-game basis. So there are different ways to pay for it. | 2014-01-08 03:47:00 Author: ConverseFox Posts: 2333 |
Cautiously optimistic about this. I can't speak for Gaikai, but I've had OnLive in the past didn't think much of it. When it worked, it worked great - most games ran at a solid 60fps with little controller lag. Image quality was average to good - aside from minor compression artifacts, textures and AA seemed to be lower quality than comparable games on other consoles and my PC which was surprising. The biggest problem with streaming is that it requires consistently great connection to even be playable. At the time, I had a good broadband connection (consistently 12+Mbps) and that still didn't seem to fast enough for many of the games - and someone opening a video in their browser or a downloading an email attachment would often cause the game to stutter. Controller latency was another big issue - some games were inexplicably unplayable due to controller lag, and playing online multiplayer games was always an exercise in frustration. To make matters worse, you can very easily burn through 10-20G in an afternoon, so if your ISP has one of those lovely bandwidth caps, you might be in for a shock when you get your internet bill When it came time for me to start thinking about paying for the service, the performance wasn't really there to justify it - especially as I had my PS3, and Xbox and a halfway decent PC to play games on. I think it's an interesting idea, but there seem to be too many performance issues with broadband in the US and UK to make streaming really viable right now, IMO. I don't mind keeping my PS3 around now that I have a PS4. | 2014-01-08 09:42:00 Author: Chazprime Posts: 587 |
I don't mind keeping my PS3 around now that I have a PS4. I intend to keep my PS3 when I get the PS4. I also intend to play all the games I want to play on the current generation(or past generation depending on your point of view) before getting the PS4. So the streaming thing isn't really beneficial for me. My internet is good at the moment, so I reckon it'd cope with the streaming, but having the game installed or running from disk is still the better option IMO. | 2014-01-08 10:07:00 Author: Ali_Star Posts: 4085 |
