Honeyland

I revised my old beehive level and it looks prettier in my opinion. It looks like a real level with some style now. It's still based on DKC2's hornet nest levels. I gave up the lighting change and went with my original idea which looks better I think. The level is still a bit laggish but not as much as the previous version. I added a lot more stuff to it and polished some areas. Removed remixed revamped etc. You should try it! | 2009-02-01 01:27:00 Author: BasketSnake Posts: 2391 |
I played this today and really enjoyed it! I loved your beehive theme and the detail that you put into it. The honey dripping down the walls or falling from the bee's while they gather it really added to the immersion. Oh! The old bee town! That was very cool as well and I liked the idea of a town within the beehive. I thought the gameplay was solid as well, with platforming elements that really fit within your world. Loved the honey pot cannons! I did have of difficulty toward the end, specifically in the section where the bees are jumping up and down and you have to go under them. I found it difficult to run under them with the ground being bumpy and when I tried to take the low road, I'd end up switching layers when I tried to jump over the spikes. A little frustrating, but I did make it eventually! You were right that I would like it! I found if very enjoyable and a lot of fun! | 2009-02-20 18:17:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |
Thanks, awesome! Actually that whole Old Beetown was added after this first post so...everyone should go play it. Drastically changed from last time. | 2009-02-20 19:40:00 Author: BasketSnake Posts: 2391 |
OMG - I just played this level tonight - It's totally adorable! Your bee's are sweet but have attitude! The layout, lighting and gameplay is really good too. I'm shocked that it doesn't have more plays/hearts! It really is a gem and after Northern Witchcraft & this one I had to heart you as a creator! Really nice work. | 2009-03-30 04:32:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
It just sucks it's a bit laggy in some areas. Best played alone. | 2009-03-30 08:32:00 Author: BasketSnake Posts: 2391 |
I didn't have any lag - but I did play alone. Is it the lighting that's lagging it? My CS3 Lags like mad but since it's underwater it sort of works. | 2009-03-30 08:42:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
Played this about a week ago while surfing Qugz hearted list. Loved it. Played it two player with no issues. Always enjoy a level with that kind of attention to detail. Bravo..really did look fantastic. Only minor slowdown. | 2009-03-30 08:55:00 Author: Jaeyden Posts: 564 |
I'd be interested hearing if you struggled much with any parts of it. It's lagging slightly because of the insane amounts of glass and because of all the details. I've spent a looong time tweaking the lights only in the level. I intend on making a boss for the level before continuing on the next and final witchcraft level. Glad you like it! Also play my stupid "ride a kangaroo" level. It's funny. | 2009-03-30 16:39:00 Author: BasketSnake Posts: 2391 |
I didn't have too many problems finishing it. I kept getting smacked by spikes but it was late in the evening and I'm laying the blame for that squarely on my shoulders. I did have a bit of trouble finding the jetpack. I did play your Kangaroo level too. It's actually the reason I found the bee one. I love you kangaroo design. They are fun to hop around in too. My only comment would be that I think roo's tend to hop leaning more to the front than backwards but I can only imagine the balancing nightmare that would require if you changed it. | 2009-03-30 17:16:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
This level really deserves more attention. I throughly enjoyed it. | 2009-03-30 22:32:00 Author: mrsupercomputer Posts: 1335 |
I can't believe I missed this one before. It must have passed by so quickly I never saw it..... oh well, played it now.... I NAILED the high score! Great game, 5 stars hearted the whole nine yards. No complaints at all... perfectly designed. | 2009-03-30 23:15:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
Are you serious? There has to be something you didn't like. | 2009-03-31 07:24:00 Author: BasketSnake Posts: 2391 |
PROS: + Loved the creative use of material + Loved the movement of the bees + Loved grabbing hold of the bees, floating around and finding new areas with points + Loved the platforming (designed really well - no frustrating jumps) + Loved the "dripping" of the honey + Loved the strategy required to go in front of and behind the glass to grab points and get x score CONS Nothing Seriously - I played it 4 times. Great job! | 2009-03-31 13:17:00 Author: CCubbage Posts: 4430 |
Hey - checked out the 2x section last night - seriously funny! I did notice that on the right hand side it's very easy to fall down in between the layers and end up either on the floor of the level or wandering around behind the sponge. I think you may have a hole or a break in materials in the middle layer - seems to be when I climb up on the metal bars and go too far to the right I slide down. You're right - it's hard. If the player fails it's hard to tell that you don't get another shot - maybe a magic mouth saying they failed and to run along would help. My friends I took in there kept thinking there was more to that section. Funny idea though. I enjoyed it. | 2009-04-08 22:09:00 Author: Morgana25 Posts: 5983 |
I will look into it. You only have one chance because if you open up the defenses the bee will shoot your own rockets. I have to fix that layer bug thing.. | 2009-04-08 22:15:00 Author: BasketSnake Posts: 2391 |
FACELIFT with LBP2's new tools and engine. I've deleted the sequel as I don't feel it ever lived up to my other levels. This "overhaul" turned into a complete remake and it's the third time I remake this level. I'm not about to make another honeyland level ANY.TIME.SOON. But do play this. http://lbp.me/v/4fybq | 2011-02-02 20:32:00 Author: BasketSnake Posts: 2391 |
Played and reviewed. Nice level. Looking at the comments I think I missed a lot of secret areas! I'll have to go back and have another look sometime! | 2011-02-02 21:34:00 Author: Unknown User |
Never thought I would play a LBP2 update, until I updated my own. I'm always up for a bee/hive level. Not sure why I like them, I just do. - Layer switching. + Running water. Much better than a circle. + Glass/honey/water. I'm so glad we can finally achieve this effect with LBP2. Enjoyed the rest. Never played the original, so I can't compare, but this is the first LBP2 level I have hearted. You seem to have the basics of LBP design down. Only things I didn't like is the layer switching at the start, and couldn't find the end gate for the second race. EDIT: Ah, from donkey kong 2. Sent you a message about the layers. | 2011-02-03 05:16:00 Author: midnight_heist Posts: 2513 |
It's inspired by the DKC2 hornet nest levels. I think there's maybe 3 levels like this. Here's one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBqEd4njabc If you can send me a pm or message with exactly which layers you didn't like I could probably fix it. | 2011-02-03 11:21:00 Author: BasketSnake Posts: 2391 |
Gorgeous beehive! I loved the design - beautiful and intricate and with wonderful mellow honeyed lighting. The dripping honey looked great too. The re-make was so worth it! Fun gameplay too. I thought the pinball mini-game in the middle of the level was a bit random but I guess those bees have to keep themselves entertained somehow and objectively it's no weirder than having a bouncepad race inside a beehive! I had a lot of fun playing! and a <3 | 2011-02-05 15:33:00 Author: shropshirelass Posts: 1455 |
That pinball game is supposed to be a simple little optional fun minigame but I guess it's not clear. Glad you like it! Remember to nudge the table enough times. Kill the woodpeckers, lol. | 2011-02-05 15:38:00 Author: BasketSnake Posts: 2391 |

No,it is clear and I did play it. It was just that it seemed an odd thing to find in a beehive, but as I said, no weirder really than everything else there when you think about it! I'll have to go and have another go as I was pretty dire at the pinball first time round. I see someone has got 45k as the highscore - that's impressive! Another reason for having a replay to see if I missed something! | 2011-02-05 15:44:00 Author: shropshirelass Posts: 1455 |
I'm not quite sure how he/she got 45k myself, lol. Managed to pull off some weird combos probably. | 2011-02-05 15:55:00 Author: BasketSnake Posts: 2391 |
