Need Help With Puzzles...

Archive: 9 posts

So, I finally finished my first true level, and feel that I've finally tapped into my true lbp specialty. Mechanisms. I absolutely excel at making exceedingly complicated machines / switches/ AIs, and now want to put my abilities to the true test...

I've played a large number of levels, and have never really found a true puzzle level. Yeah there's a lot of "go to point A, get object, drag it to hole, done" levels, lots of mazes, lots of go hit that button and come back... so on...

But never any level that really required you to wrack your brain for some serious puzzle solving. So i'm going to make a generic multi room level, each room will be a puzzle, they start simple and get very complex.

Lots of, grabbing keys and opening specific doors, levers, switches, buttons, and exceedingly complex rooms.

Generally, each room is going to be about a 10-15 wide square composed of a mosiac of shapes that seperate/congeal/move around to be part of the puzzle, or just for looks.

Here are some ideas of my own I'll be implementing...

One room will consist of 6 1 wide, 5 tall pillars that can slide in and out of the ground, and slide halfway up the wall, second back layer. They are in front of the wall, etc...

Now, the goal of this puzzle is to get all 6 pillars sticking up, upon completion 6 more pillars will come down from roof to connect with bottoms ones, then door opens.

In front of each pillar will be a switch, probably just a button. These make the pillars go up and down. One catch though.

When you push a button, not only does its corresponding pillar change positions, but the ones beside it do to. Suddenly a lot harder, eh?

Other examples will be, 2 switchs on either side of room. One makes a latch open on middle of floor to show a 1 deep hole. Other pushes square down on piston. Simply open hole, drop square down, close latch overtop, then pull square back up, along with a chunk of floor that connects with roof. then floors slide inwards to fill hole, *ding* door opens.

I think you guys are getting the point. I'm not looking for simple "ok so drag this here square into that hole, mmkay?" puzzles. I'm looking for much more complicated and intricate ones. Bonus points if the player can see the intricacy of it.

If you have levels with decent puzzles, feel free to post them and I'll take and look for some brainstorming ideas...

Hmm I like the idea, although it may be kindof tricky to get the switch to operate the one its in front of and the one beside it, but if I think of any ideas Ill be sure to let you know.2009-02-01 00:30:00

I'd advise you to play H.A.T.E. by Voltiare (Which you probably already did, since it rocks ) he has a puzzle, which requires you to get a cube, out of a puzzle. And you do so by pulling switches that will retract or expand certain pistons. You might not know what i mean, but i find it kinda hard to explain. So just play the level and you will see. Personally i find it a amazing puzzle, and even though you probably can't use it (Unless he gives you permission ofcourse) you might get inspired by it.2009-02-02 15:52:00

I've worked on some puzzles, but they don't need to be complicated, to look it. Trying to get something out of a maze by pulling levels to spin circles or (as stated above) with pistons is always good. If you put a mag key on the item you're trying to get out then you can use it to open a door further on...........
That would work well, try it out.

You need logic gates, they will make it a lot easier to make combinations etc. Check Nelly's Logic Lesson for the best logic gates made by Randofu.2009-02-02 18:34:00

for an interesting way to make people think use a rotating puzzle wheel, I used one in my last level and they're quite fun to make

Its basically a series of wheels, each getting smaller mounted onto each other with a motor bolt, and switches to control each bolt. Basically you use the switches to rotate the wheels.

You cant put all sorts on the wheels, from Pictures people have to remake by rotating the wheels, or even codes (like those good old fasioned decoder rings), perhaps they have to spell words?

All you have to do is put the wheels in a correct postion and use mag switches to show when they are in the right position. Its a break from the normal puzzle anyway

I will have an example of a sequence puzzle you can make with logic gates,

Yeah I kind of like the rotating wheels thing.

But I'd probably set it up as a math equation...

There would be ... 4 rings. But second from center doesn't move.

On left right, top, and bottom side will be numbers on the first and third ring. Center will be 42 (lol)

Second ring will have a +, -, X, and /

Thus you gotta rotate them until they all match up and all 4 equations = 42.

Something like that.

Also maybe a rubiks style puzzle...

3 x 3, or 4x4 grid of squares. Probably 3x3.

Pushing switch will cause various squares, flipping it around. the goal is to match them up to pattern on wall.

*resumes brainstorming* Thanks for replies guys, keep em coming!

Check out my level, the forgotten relics of the sack...

I have a pretty cool puzzle, like a jigsaw.
