help with building a train
Archive: 10 posts
Hey guys, I;ve been reading these forums for a while and realised that the majority of members on here seem extremely good at creating stuff. I've started my 3rd level now and wanted to build a train at the beginning of the level that you can stand in and it stops at a certain point (sort of like the train at the beginning of 'The Collector' but with mor carriages). Any ideas on how about i can create something like this or even just tips? It will be my first vehicle that i will be creating Thanks for any help | 2009-01-31 23:57:00 Author: sharp357 Posts: 27 |
Ok, I assume since its your third level, you got the basic design principals down, and really just need help with the michanics of the whole thing... so here it goes. have your train built, (i would use either string or limp rods to hold the cars to the engine) use a motor bolt to make the train move.. ok so whenever the train gets where you want it to stop, place a proximity switch.. create a perminant switch (incase you dont know, its a piece of desolve material and a peice of regular material. the desove has an attached Magnetic Key, the other material has an attached mag switch) attatch the prox. switch to the desove material, and the Magnetic switch to the Motor bolt, and it should work fine... If you need any help with it, I would be glad to, just ask specificly what you need help with. | 2009-02-01 00:16:00 Author: Madafaku Posts: 738 |
If the train needs to stop in multiple places then I would suggest using an inverted mag switch to turn the train on, and place keys on dissolve at the points you want it to stop. You could then set up an and switch that will only dissolve the key (thus starting the train again) after certain conditions are met. Say robbing the bank, retrieving the gold from the mine, saving a damsel in distress. . . If you need any help figuring out the wiring on this just ask many of us (myself included) love helping others out. | 2009-02-01 07:14:00 Author: Trader Sam Posts: 92 |

sorry for posting in the wrong place, hmmm seems easy enough. I will give it a go now and get back to you on how it goes. Thanks for your help so far | 2009-02-01 13:01:00 Author: sharp357 Posts: 27 |
now im havin real trouble building the train so one of the carriages has a door that opens (the train is covering two planes and i want the front to open so the player can jump out the front onto a platform) i understand how to make the train move and stop but would really like to make it look good as i'm going for an amazing map this time round lol. Could anyone help | 2009-02-01 23:03:00 Author: sharp357 Posts: 27 |
You would need the door, I'm assuming, in the thin layer. On the Cars you have a mag swich set to directional. At each Station you have a key. Make sure the keys+Swiches that drive the train are a different colour than the ones that open doors. Connect the key on each car to the pistons, and there you go. They should open whenever the train gets near the station. | 2009-02-02 00:11:00 Author: DRT99 Posts: 431 |
as far as design aspects, I find it really helps to find real pictures of the object (in this case trains) and design from there... IDK if most people do this or not, I kindof have an artistic background. | 2009-02-02 08:18:00 Author: Madafaku Posts: 738 |
as far as design aspects, I find it really helps to find real pictures of the object (in this case trains) and design from there... IDK if most people do this or not, I kindof have an artistic background. I do this . I allways have enormous trouble of making something in the right proportions. In my current level I wanted to make a ship, but I just couldn't get the proportions right. A quick GIS for some ships got me a good side-view picture and using it I got the proportions right, while still making it custom and LBP-y. On the train, make sure you make it the size you need for the gameplay sections. On the beforementioned ships I got the problem that I did make a pretty and well proportioned ship, but there was hardly any usefull room for gameplay on it . Special emphasis on making enough headroom to jump without bumping your head, Double that if you intent to make the train run on sloped terrain. | 2009-02-02 11:59:00 Author: Wyth Posts: 263 |
