New Track!: Challenge of Sackulese

Archive: 21 posts

Hello all!

I'm back with my latest track. I've been working on this one for several months now, and I'm finally to where I'm happy with it and can publish it. Anyways, onto the introduction!

This is the Challenge of Sackulese (https://karting.lbp.me/v/p8qo)! Fight as the great hero Sackulese as he makes his way down Mount Colossus, through the forgotten temple, crushing what lay in his way! You will encounter many great dangers, but the strength and skill of Sackulese can overcome them all.

This is an event level where you fight your way through multiple unique bosses. Each one with different set of attacks and a different way to kill (ok, ok, not too specialized, ultimately you just have to shoot them, but when and where can vary). Your weapon spawns on you automatically, under an ~8 second cooldown, so no need to hunt for pods! There is a points based system, where landing a proper hit grants you points and killing the beast grants the party a mass of points, but beware, death takes it's toll of points as well. At the completion of the level, you are awarded prizes based on how many points you've accumulated.

This challenge can be completed solo, but is easiest, and (in my opinion) most fun with a group of 2-4. A caveat, though, is present in that the more players present, the more difficult it is to earn enough points for the highest prizes (set at 5000, 10,000, 13,000, 16,000, and 18,000 points).

On to some pictures!

The map has been beta tested locally, but if there is any issues, let me know! Also, due to complexity, there is sometimes a lag spike when you hit the bosses, particularly the first one. You should be able to figure out how to kill each one pretty quickly if you are looking for it, but if you want me to post a small guide on them, I can do that too!

Enjoy!

The 3rd boss is fairly straight forward in theory, but in practice, can prove difficult.

There are essentially two phases of damage for the boss:
1) About 5 hits to the chest armor - leads to the armor being destroyed.
2) About 2 hits to the "heart" on the chest of the boss

Due to the height of the target, getting a correct hit can be difficult, especially in the second phase. A strategy is to drive straight at the boss and leap and fire while in the air - which when done properly will land a hit, and you will land in front of it, and drive right underneath it unharmed. It can be done without leaping, but the distance from the boss needs to be pretty precise in order to have the weapon's arc height reach the "heart" appropriately, which can be difficult and leave you vulnerable to attacks. There is a sweet spot, though, where you can hit it, but it can't hit you, but it is difficult to maintain this spot.

This one gives me the most trouble sometimes because I get impatient and don't aim properly. My brothers had quite a bit of success with the drive and jump method. I haven't perfected it myself yet though, but I've seen its effectiveness.

Be vigilant!

One question about the fourth boss, the dragon: how to kill him and where to hit him?

Edit: I think i found it: I hit him many times, he felll. I hit him on the head. But woke up! Then i did it again many times

Really good level, but pretty hard. Good job. I would be interested to know the logic an understand how the bosses moved.

May be it 's on the prizes, but i just find one of them.

Yep! His head is his weak spot, to get to it, you have to hit his front legs twice (in any combination) for him to fall over and then you can reach his head. Solo this can take some time, as you can only get about 1 hit in per fall (cooldown on weapon slowing that down), so multiplayer goes a good bit faster.

Glad you made it through! It's designed to always present a challenge and allow some point competition between coop partners. This apparently made it harder on a first try, due to having to figure out where and how to hit most of the enemies. Though it is quite possible. Over Christmas, I had my brothers independently test the level with zero prior knowledge on the mechanics, and they both made it through, with a few trial and error deaths (OK, more than a few). You also stand testament to it now!

The logic is what took me 90% of the time to wire out and tweak for my 3-4 months putting this together. They move (except for #2) using linked pistons and a look at motor (except #4), and have attacks linked to a randomizer (though for some reason I can't explain, they favor certain attacks over others). #2 has several spawn points (emitters) on a randomizer, also linked to some transmitters, so that when on, it spawns, but when the randomizer switches off, the transmitter stops its signal and a destroyer is activated to "fade" it away, where the randomizer will start again, spawning it again.

If you want, I can make the level copyable. There's not much for logic in the prizes; I wanted to put it in there, but they were too complex to fit in a prize.

On a related note, #4 has 3 attacks. Did you see them all? I'm a big fan of one of them, but in my experience, he does it maybe once a match.

You must speak about the attack with lava?
Yes it happens only once at the very beginning of the battle.

I'm really interested by the logic of the bosses. If you could make a copyable version that would be very nice. (just as long as i copy it and then you can make it uncopyable back if you want)

I can make it copyable. Do I have to re-publish it to do so? Or can I do it without going through that mess? I thought about making it copyable from the beginning, can't remember why I didn't.

And yes, I was referring to the lava attack. I don't know why it does that, but it seems a trend with the engine: after a while the randomizers start to favor certain selections, and when more complex logic is construed, some of the logic lines start mis-firing or firing blank.

I'll make it copyable tonight, when I get home.

I'll make a copyable version separate from the main one, like Sirr suggested. I'll leave it up indefinitely. Tonight for me is 2.5+ hours from now (Texas).

EDIT:

Ah! The level already is copyable. Must have actually selected it then. Let me know if you have any questions about it, some parts are not very organized... I got lazy after a bit.

Weird, I went to my earth through text search and it said I could copy it, and even recorded me doing it on my level page. Since I saw I could do that, I didn't publish another one, but I'll go ahead and do it anyways. Maybe it's still a me-only thing... though I thought that wouldn't be the case going through the servers like that.

Edit: I have published a copyable version: C.o. Sackulese (copyable) (https://karting.lbp.me/v/qb12)
