Whats You Game Of The Gen?

Archive: 24 posts

I was thinking what was my experience with a game during the PlayStation 3 life time now that it is almost over (only games released on the PlayStation 3). I own a lot of games, plenty from my PlayStation Plus subscription. Personally I loved (still do) The Last of US, utterly brilliant, I cannot criticize it in one aspect besides I want MORE! The story was very interesting and really pulls you in, connects you with your character and makes you feel, emotionally, which I have never experienced in a game before. From a graphical perspective it looks superb, pretty unbelievable that Naughty Dog got a game to look so impressive on a graphics card from around 2005, completely outdated. I couldn't find a official date but it was designed exclusively for the console in 2005. Level design, was perfect, never got stuck by characters, never got lost as I was always on course to my way point, never fell through the map (am looking at you Metro Last Light). Multiplayer, I rarely play it, I generally hate it because developers usually mess this part up, but this game was... perfect, fantastic, insane. I spend endless hours with friends, never losing a match as we became obsessed with a game so perfectly made everyone of my friends bought it.

Other games I liked were Fallout even though there were bug and glitches, it remains my favorite franchise. Nothing beats it. Some other games that I have been impressed by were Remember Me, Batman Arkham Games (I love you Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill), Call of Duty Modern Warfare, Battlefield 3, Borderlands and the sequel but the first was better, BioShock 2 (Infinite was meh, more of a excuse to make some money on Take Two's part), Skyrim was a top-notch game, Guacamelee! superb indie title, Metro Last Light was really good considering the difficult development between 4AGames the developers and the publisher THQ bankrupt then it was bought by Deep Silver, Red Dead Redemption was pretty cool although the multiplayer was just awful why? It was western Grand Theft Auto IV. Last but there are more Mafia II was really great, brilliant game with a intriguing story, I should play the first game.

LBP needs it's own paragraph. This game was revolutionary, attracting people from age 5 to 50. An audience some connect with their imagination they let it out in a single game crafting some of the best levels that are far more standalone worthy that some actual releases. The possibilities provided by Media Molecule were endless, letting us make 2D platformers to 3D first person shooters. The amount of installments in this franchise are becoming too frequent but some are good, LBP, great, LBP PlayStation Portable, not as good because there were only 2 layers but still, LBP Prehistoric moves was too expensive for the lack content included, LBP 2 was improvements everywhere for the better, LBP Karting was a joke, what's wrong with you Sony? LBP Vita was like a portable LBP2 with more crafting tools and another story mode ingenious, now LBP Hub. Gosh, Hub is gonna be legendary (get the reference?). Mainly because it is free to play, and it's on PlayStation 3, which keeps me wanting to play it more even though I have the PlayStation 4 as there isn't much for it yet. The ?40 I could spend on the game now goes to downloadable content with more... obviously because that's what Sony do to us, release far too much for us to buy, especially since I have no job and am attending college, the money I have is from occasions such as Christmas and the odd "Mum, can I buy this on my PlayStation 3? It's only ?2.39". But I do appreciate the support, unlike a lot of companies who immediately abandon the game because they can, like EA after they got their downloadable content money. Thank you Media Molecule for giving us this game, and to Tarsier Studios for the Vita and to Sumo Digital for the free game, also to I believe it to be XDev Europe for support and Cambridge University who developed the PlayStation Portable version. But United Font Games, shame on you! Karting was terrible. Although LBP in not my favorite game, it is certainly in the top 10 of the gen and the best of it's genre and competitors.

What was your favorite game of the generation? Your Game of the Year for PlayStation 3? Your worst game on the console? And why you think this?

Scott.

My favorite was probably Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction or LittleBigPlanet 2. Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction is the main reason I became a Playstation fan, and the only reason I bought a PS2. LittleBigPlanet 2 blew my mind with all the levels made by people like me, and the amount of creativity the game has. I never really had a problem with any games this gen at all. I'm just hoping that the eighth generation blows me away even more.2013-12-16 03:13:00

Littlebigplanet, Modnation and Ratchet and Clank.

They're masterpieces in my eyes.

Nice to see you mention Guacamelee, I've been playing it to death recently. Brilliant game!

As for the Game of the Generation.... I couldn't possibly pick one! I'll just list a few of my top ones (I will say that I can only vouch for PS3, I haven't owned any other consoles this gen):

Bioshock series
inFamous series
Uncharted series
Resistance series
Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood
Batman Arkham City/Asylum
Read Dead Redemption
GTA IV/V
Mirror's Edge
Fallout 3
Skyrim
Killzone 2/3
Dead Space series
Flower
God of War sequels
LBP/LBP2 (of course!)
Borderlands
Braid
LA Noire
Journey
Portal 2
Far Cry 3
Tomb Raider reboot
The Walking Dead
The Last of Us
Hotline Miami
Guacamelee
Limbo

Ok.... that's quite a few. But they're all great games.

As for worst games..... it's a difficult one to call, you don't usually buy bad games do you? I can list a few of my disappointments:

Resident Evil 5
Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 onwards
Anything after AC: Brotherhood
Fallout New Vegas (still a good game, but not a step up on Fallout 3)

I agree with LBP, really impressive stuff. I've never really had the pleasure of playing Ratchet & Clank, or owning them at all, although I have All 4 One from PSPlus and Booty Call? I think it is Booty Call, or Adventure or such...

I love Guacamelee! I think it may be my favourite indie game, that of what I have played. I also play the hell out of it, just can't get enough.

I really like the InFamous series, I own both 1 & 2, I never purchased the standalone PSN title, the vampire one I can't recall the name. Uncharted has never really pulled me in, I love the multiplayer though, I played the hell out of the beta. Although I played Resistance 2 and own 3 I don't specifically like it, but I play it because it is better than most releases to date. Assassins Creed has lost it's touch, mainly because of the annual release and other instalment constantly released. Batman was unbelievable, what made it was the top-notch voice acting. Mirrors Edge could have been more, but it was a strong interesting game. Fallout & Skyrim were equally good, probably in my opinion the best of your list. Killzone has a intense multiplayer, for the good, brilliant gameplay. Dead Space lost it at 3 mainly because of the co-op even though it had potential. I heard Flower is good but I never felt the need to buy it. I don't really like the whole Hack 'n' Slash genre so God of War isn't appealing to me. LA Noire was... unexplainable, too bad the studio has been shut down. Far Cry 3 was tight, maybe perfect but fell on the map creator and co-op. Hotline Miami is addictive but I prefer Guacamelee!. Limbo wasn't that great honestly.

Bad games, Aliens Colonial Marines was okay but a let down. Brink was fun but was unfinished because Bethesda pushed it out the doors. Back to the Future The Game was awful. Anything after AC Revelations I think. I agree on a similar scale with New Vegas but I can't say it is a bad game because it is my all time favourite franchise.

I've only recently started Dead Space 3 (bought it from Amazon for ?8.99 as a Black Friday deal), seems alright so far. Can't believe you don't rate Limbo, certainly in the minority there!

Dark Souls probably be my favorite game of this gen. I've plugged so much time into the game it's astounding. Worst game I probably played this gen was, in my opinion, Final Fantasy 13. I did not enjoy the story, the characters were terrible, and I hated the gameplay. As for best game of this year, has to be The Last of Us.2013-12-29 03:59:00

I really don't know why I don't like it, it's not that I dislike it.

Dark Souls was hard, I bought it after a friend recommended it to me, I put about 20 hours in. I got up to a forest with a Dragon that kills me immediately, I gave up. Didn't want to kill the 2 goblins again.

I never liked Final Fantasy, the gameplay never grasped me.

The Last of Us. I could write articles, documents if you will. Best game of the year no doubt.

Scott.

Skyrim was great fun, luckily I never experience any glitches. Ratchet and Clank I only played All 4 One so I can't really have an input. I recently got Beyond: Two Souls for Christmas. Utterly brilliant game, great graphics, story, acting, everything. Got really strange further on, didn't expect the game to be all supernatural and demonic. Fantastic though.

I don't own an XBox since it broke obviously. So I made the swap to the better platform. I had Halo 3 which was awesome, and Halo Wars but it lacked content although was good for it's time being.

InFamous is a game I will always like. Looking forward to Second Son, gonna pre-order it soon. Looks brilliant.

Scott.

I don't own any of the Sonic games, except Racing Stars Transformed or something of sorts. But that is because Sony gave it away to PlayStation Plus subscribers.

I played many great games this generation, such as Tomb Raider (2013), Red Dead Redemption, Skyrim, L.A. NOIRE, Grand Theft Auto 4 and 5, Bioshock Infinite, Far Cry 3, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Burnout Paradise, Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood, Resistance: Fall of men, Borderlands 2... all of those were very, very fantastic games in their own right either as standalone games or sequels. Still, when all is said and done, LittleBigPlanet is the ultimate champion of the generation, as it was not only extremely bold, but also ridiculously fantastic gaming experience. LittleBigPlanet 2 is a worthy sequel, but I feel like it lacks a little bit of the magic the original had in terms of style, though objectively it's just as good.

So yeah, my top 5 games of the generation (yes, I very much do love lists):

5) Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
4) Tomb Raider (2013)
3) Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
2) Red Dead Redemption
1) LittleBigPlanet

Better looking then young Megan Fox. Better storytelling then The Shawnshank redemption. Better acting then a twilight film and they don't even say a word in this game

For me it's LIttleBigPlanet 2, I got addicted to LBP in 2008 and I had never really owned a game where you could create with few limitations. I felt two was a huge improvement and I was still equally addicted to it. In fact I've never really been addicted to a game before or since.

It was for the reasons above that I loved Modnation racers.

Another game I loved was civilization revolution, it was good but the experienced civ player probably expected it to be somewhat similar to the PC. It was a good introduction for me and I now play civ 5 knowing it was the console version that truly introduced me.

Anything is better than Twilight.

Gotta ask is Omsi a bus simulator? Doesn't show very much potential unless your long life passion is to drive a bus.

I completely agree, nor have I ever been addicted to a game.

Civ, hmm. I have the 5th one on Steam, but I never played it. I got it given to me when I voted in the GMG awards. I like RTS' and I think that is what it is. Rise of Nations, Age of Empire... I just don't dedicate time into these games.

Omsi is indeed a bus simulator. It's the most tense, crazy , hilarious simulator ever.

Hmm. Doesn't seem like the game I'd be potentially into. Seems being late to the bus stop would be tense, and accidentally running over pedestrians seems kinda fun.

I don't see why it's not just called Bus Simulator 2013 like most other simulators. Strange.

Valkyria Chronicles and LBP2 would probably be my games of the generation. Some brilliant experiences had.
Xcom: Enemy Within is game of the year, so much fun.

Worst game of the generation is probably Aliens: Colonial Marines. Don't buy it, just don't.

I'd have to say lbp, last of us, fat princess and star/warhawk as runners up, but ultimately Valkyria Chronicles is the best of the generation as unlike basically every other game this gen it delivered an entirely new and unique experience that was practically incomparable to any other games I know of (until maybe xcom more recently) with a pretty dam great story to boot. unlike a game like last of us, the game play here is good enough whereby even without the story or graphics, the game would still likely be one of the absolute best of the gen and overall I can't sing it's praises enough. (all this is unless psp still counts as this gen in which case valkyria chronicles 3 might be considered the superior experience)2013-12-31 20:50:00

Unfortunately I did purchase the game. It couldn't have been as bad as they say could it I thought. I played it, for the most that I played I had fun. The bugged mess that it is was frustrating. I played the Co-op, Alien Boss fight when I was in the yellow fork lift robot thing and the fight was impossible. It hit me, I flew back, I hit it but it missed because the Alien started flipping around then I randomly fell out of it. Ridiculous.

The worst part was in the beginning when your walking through the corridor and Captain Cruz has the Chestburster inside of him. What does he do? Blows himself up for absolutely no reason at all. It's so stupid, if you haven't seen the game look at what the game should have been http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lGXDM3LGnk. So disappointing.

At least we are getting Aliens: Isolation, hopefully not from Gearbox again.

PlayStation Portable is part of the PS3 generation, so yes you can say Valkyria Chronicles 3.

I've never played the game before but looking at it. I don't think it would be suited to the games I generally like.

well yeah as a series valkyria chronicles is probably a love it or be bored by it type game, but if you can get into it it really is the best srpg available at the moment. I didn't think it'd be my cup of tea but after trying you can see how much I enjoyed it here. valkyria 3 on psp is brilliant, with a really deep story to boot, definitely worth it if you still have a psp to play it on.2014-01-04 13:02:00

Fortune Summoners
Geometry Wars
Hyperdimension Neptune series
LBP
Noby Noby Boy
Serious Sam 3
Touhou Hisoutensoku
Valkyria Chronicles
Ys Origin
I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff.

There's a few games I've yet to play or finish, like Tales/Atelier/Disgaea, that I'm looking forward to.
