Making Snow

Archive: 8 posts

Hello everybody, have a nice day and happy holidays!

I need help in a level I'm making. Its winter-themed, and I want to make some falling snow.

Anybody knows a way to simulate snow with low thermo-cost?

I tried using hologram, and it won't raise the thermometer much, but it doesn't look too good.

By the way, I should mention that I don't have access to Move or Crossover packs.

Thanks before hand for the help!

Play my level when you have the time, if you want

There are 2 ways. The emitter version and the bubble material version. You can use 3D layers, put bubble material in the background, and put neon material behind the bubble material and change the neon color to blue or purple. It'll give a nice beautiful sky look with snow falling. Or you can emit "snowflakes" but that causes lag and is slightly worse for the thermo.2013-12-10 19:31:00

Emitting snowflakes can cause massive lag (speaking from experience here) so if you do that, I suggest triggering your emitters with a player sensor so they're only on when in view. This will help with lag and thermo. Also try to keep other movement to a minimum and avoid grappling hooks if you've got a lot of emitted snow, and keep in mind that lag will be worse with more players.
You'd be better off using a sticker on Sticker Panel - personally I think it's worth buying the pack just for that material. Also you can get everything from the pack (after buying the DLC) from a copyable level here: http://lbp.me/v/kq3qx6

There's a material that is commonly used for space levels; it looks like stars speeding by. You can turn this material so the "stars" are moving down, slow it down, and it looks like snow falling. You could use various means to change the color, lighten it up, etc.2013-12-11 03:24:00

I'm not sure about your version of the second method, but I'll try it out and see what it looks like! I say that because I only use the Bubble material without neon!

There is a way that Ive seen to work pretty well, you take a picture of snow on a black background, then you emmit the snow picture, but with lower opacity and it will look like snow, just try to get a setting to offset the black in the picture2013-12-12 03:37:00

The neon acts as a kind of backlight. It makes the bubble material look very vivid and bright, even if your level lighting is very dark (like a snowy night scene)

Oh okay! I understand now. I guess I'll have to experiment a bit with that later on, but thanks for explaining it!
