Suggestion: Auto-Lock 1 year+ old threads.

Archive: 16 posts

Just a suggestion.

But I think any inactive-topic that is over 1 year old should be automatically locked. And If for any reason the topic should need to be revived, A person can just ask a Mod at that point to reopen it.

It's a small thing but it's often treated as bad-manners when people bump old topics on forums. It's often done by new members who somehow never seen a forum in their life before or something. This would cut out that small problem. I seen other forums that do this so it should be possible. *mew

For what it's worth, I think that's a good idea.2013-12-10 19:01:00

Not over 1 year old 1 year inactive.

Well that's common sense. But I expected somebody was gonna say that. *mew

I would love to see this but (when we have done this in the past) we have had people scream that we were locking threads unfairly.
I will forward your suggestion to Taffey to get his thoughts about it.

Sounds like a good idea, but only to those that are inactive over a year. I don't think it will apply to the active threads that were created two years ago or longer.2013-12-10 21:15:00

What I said is only suppose to apply to "over 1 year old inactive topics" obviously.2013-12-10 21:28:00

I'd love to see this implemented, but can we do something about inactive membership? Disactivating members may seem a bit more rude, but it often irritates me to see when certain members will make an account one day and never use it again. Could we do the same thing similarly with them, but instead of 1 year we could do something like 2-3 years of inactivity. Enough inactivity that gives us certainty that it won't matter whether or not we disactivate their accounts... Another similar suggestion you know! 2013-12-10 21:45:00

I think that's not a horrible idea. Maybe with a added rule of anybody with over 100 posts is safe too regardless. But pretty sure nobody will probably go for it here. I think a rule like that is probably better for a game site and not a gaming forum like ours. *mew

PS: I think he means delete old accounts and not ban.

Nah, that seems unnecessary. In the end it will probably end up in people creating more accounts. Sometimes people return after a year or two to make some posts, it's not too uncommon.

Agreed. As long as people can request threads be reopened (I'm thinking of maybe tv show threads that could be inactive for long periods in between seasons), then the one year locked rule could work. Also, the fact that it can be unlocked should be made clear to everyone.
Hopefully this wouldn't lead to constant spam of "please unlock x" though.

For users, double-nah. As someone who made their account, didn't use it, and then came back, I'm a bit biased against that idea.

Yeah, auto banning users sounds pointless beyond ticking off people who are returning. Why would you want to ban old users anyway? It's not like this is an MMO where the average users per month matter.

Even more so since some people I knew in my 5 years here sometimes pop by to say hi, and I don't see the point in banning them forever and ever and ever and ever and ever.

It may seem rude if someone makes an account and never returns, but a bit more rude to deactivate his account for being inactive. Plus, we have had many show up a few years later and realize they never posted. ..and like Rock says, there are tons of folks that we would love to hear from again from those first few years. So appreciate the suggestion, but that really won't happen.

I can see what you all mean and I had failed to consider how it is true that many people do return once in a while even if for just a moment! Now, looking back at my original post, I feel rather ashamed! I love members and I just feel a bit frustrated whenever members make accounts that were never used. Anyways, returning to the original topic, I'm in complete agreement with that one! Let's see if something can be done! 2013-12-12 15:56:00

Assuming there are threads that are exempt from this rule, like help threads and projects, I'm fine with this idea.2013-12-12 23:03:00
