Off-topic Confusion

Archive: 8 posts

The question of this thread is about what is really on-topic or off-topic. Sometimes, I am confused about what counts as on-topic or off-topic. I know some things are obvious, but there are some things I don't see as off-topic when they are really off-topic. For example, there was a thread earlier this year about how the community views criticism, but I was talking about how it's stupid to reject criticism as people need to talk about it. There was another thread, but it was about irritating things. A mod said that "responding to an irritation is off-topic", but I think sharing opinions shouldn't be counted as off-topic.

I've been a member on this site long enough to understand what I should never do (I'm now more behaved), but there are some things I don't get. Why do some "off-topic" posts get counted as on-topic, while "on-topic" posts get counted as off topic?

Here's another question (so I can get the idea of what's acceptable or what's not): Is the entire post off-topic if only one percent of it has off-topic information or if all of it is on-topic, but contains something that gets people off-topic?

For the most part we are pretty lenient, especially when it is all in good fun. When it is otherwise we might look a bit closer, but regardless it is a judgement call. We hate to see one thread turn into another completely different topic and that is when we might drop in and plop in a reminder. Which is clearly the case in the thread you asked about. Rather than listing what irritates each other, it turned into a discussion about something that irritated one particular member.

However saying I only said "responding to an irritation is off-topic" is not really fair at all. I said much much more and explained it quite well. It was just my way of responding to those accusations and also get the thread back on topic. It should also be noted, no posts were deleted, none edited and the thread was never locked.

I think it is quite simple to know when you are off topic. If you want to have a conversation about something in particular that someone posted, take it to visitors pages or send a pm. Don't derail the thread.

Ok. What I thought was that "staying on-topic isn't just talking about only what's related - it's exactly following the title of the topic". I'm sorry about singling you out on the "irritating things" thread, but if I was a mod (which will never happen), I would've said the same thing. So basically, off-topic posting is only limited to talking about what's irrelevant to the thread or changing to conversation of the thread, such as talking about spam cans. I think I explained it quite well in my prior post.2013-12-10 03:48:00

I would link you to an archived "LBP3" thread that got a couple of us banned for a while as an example of off-topicness but I fear the banhammer would once again be swung.

But anyway, this might be a little "off-topic", but relevant to the mods - I noticed that this (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=82630-Xbox-One-I-GOT-2-BY-ACCIDENT-O-o) thread had been locked, but Morgana posted in it asking a question. This is why I still think mods should be more clear about why they lock or delete stuff - it seems to even be confusing other mods

You can post that thread link, but I think that was another mod team wasn't it? I'd like to think we are kinder and more friendly in this group.

As far as Morgana posting in a locked thread, from our view it isn't as easy to see it as locked sometimes and after all hindsight is 20/20 and we are human. Perhaps it should have had a reason of why it was locked thus possibly her seeing it better, but sometimes it is pretty obvious why something is locked. Regardless, I don't think it a real issue.

IMO, not in this case, unless the OP requested it. Surely not because of the couple of off-topic posts near the end? Like Apple said, it's pretty confusing sometimes (see, now this is on topic ). The mods do a great job and I hope you don't feel like I'm constantly arguing with you but I still think clearer reasoning is needed sometimes and that less time should be spent locking threads that don't need to be locked, and more time moving wrongly-placed threads to make everyone's life a little easier

Thanks for that.

I apologize for that thread as it may have been me. If I recall, I found the entire topic a bit boastful and locked it as I couldn't see what good it would do even if it did get back on topic. I should have made a clear note, but I think I did in the vault and not in the thread.

It is quite hard for me now that I have a new job and don't work from home. My only access during my day is with my iPhone as this site is blocked being a gaming site.
